Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. It's the second day of a partial shutdown for the Department of Homeland Security after Democrats demanded changes for immigration agents, including not wearing masks, not racially profiling people, and requiring them to identify themselves. this in order to extend funding. But Congress left without a deal, and it's now on a one-week recess.
This after immigration agents shot and killed two U.S. citizens in Minnesota last month. White House Border Czar Tom Holman rejects the lawmakers' demands.
I'll let the White House and members of Congress, you know, fight that out. But I think some of the asks are just, I think they're unreasonable because there is no racial profiling. There is identifying marks. But masks, you know, while they talk about maybe passing legislation to make it illegal to dox at agents or something like that. But the masks right now are for officer safety reasons.
Speaking there on CBS's Face the Nation, Holman says more than 1,000 agents have left Minnesota and more will leave soon. Democratic leaders say the party is ready to spend millions of dollars on a ballot measure in Virginia, allowing Democrats to redraw the state's congressional map.
And here's Ashley Lopez reports, it's an effort to offset President Trump's plans to tilt maps in the GOP's favor for the midterms.
The Virginia Supreme Court ruled on Friday that Democrats can put a ballot measure before voters that would pave the way for the party to draw as many as four more seats that would favor them this year. In an interview with CNN, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said the party will fight hard to make sure that measure passes.

We will spend tens of millions of dollars to make sure that the Republicans do not successfully manipulate voters in Virginia and that voters have all of the information necessary to make a decision.
GOP leaders in Texas, North Carolina, and Missouri redrew their congressional maps at President Trump's urging last year. The special election in Virginia will be held in April. Ashley Lopez, NPR News.
The Israeli cabinet has approved a new measure allowing the government to claim more land in the occupied West Bank. And here's Daniel Estrin reports.
The Israeli cabinet said the decision would allow the government to register large swaths of territory as state land. Critics of the decision said Palestinians would find it hard to prove land ownership under the Israeli criteria. This follows a series of other measures Israel took last week to strengthen Israel's grip over that territory that Palestinians want for a future state.
President Trump opposes formal Israeli annexation, but has not stopped Israel from taking these steps as he focuses on Gaza. Trump says countries have pledged more than $5 billion for Gaza and thousands of personnel for peacekeeping forces there. Lethal Israeli strikes continued in Gaza today.
