Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corva Coleman.
Chapter 2: What recent findings did NPR uncover about the Jeffrey Epstein files?
An NPR investigation finds that the Justice Department has withheld or removed some pages in the public database of the Jeffrey Epstein files. These missing files are related to allegations that President Trump sexually abused a minor around 1983. There are records that show the FBI interviewed this accuser of Trump four times when she was an adult.
But only one of the interviews is in the public database, and it does not mention Trump at all.
Chapter 3: What allegations are being made against President Trump in relation to Epstein?
Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing.
Chapter 4: What are the latest developments regarding Peter Mandelson's arrest?
The former British ambassador to the United States has been released on bail after he was arrested yesterday. NPR's Lauren Freyer reports from London Peter Mandelson was fired over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
Around 2 a.m., a cab pulled up outside Mandelson's North London home. And the former ambassador got out. Police say he was released on bail pending further investigation.
Chapter 5: How are Democrats responding to President Trump's upcoming State of the Union address?
Mandelson is also a former MP and government minister, accused of passing government secrets to Jeffrey Epstein. The latest DOJ files reveal Mandelson apparently forwarded market-sensitive documents to Epstein to share with bankers. and advised an American CEO to threaten one of Mandelson's fellow cabinet ministers.
He's apologized for ties to Epstein, but has not commented on these latest allegations. Mandelson's arrest comes days after that of King Charles' brother Andrew on similar grounds. Neither man has been charged. Lauren Frayer, NPR News, London.
President Trump delivers the first State of the Union address tonight of his second term in office. It comes as polling shows many Americans say Trump is moving the country in the wrong direction.
Chapter 6: What is the current status of the conflict in Ukraine as of today?
Meanwhile, Democrats will offer two responses to the address tonight, one in English and one in Spanish. The Department of Homeland Security remains partially shut down. Congress has not yet passed a spending bill for it. Democrats are demanding changes in how federal immigration agents operate. Today is the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
NPR's Charles Maines reports from Moscow the conflict shows few signs of abating.
President Trump returned to office vowing he could leverage his relations in Moscow and Kiev to resolve the conflict in short order. Yet months of U.S.-led negotiations have bogged down over Russian demands for additional Ukrainian territory its forces do not hold and Ukraine's need for U.S.-backed security guarantees that Washington is yet to offer.
The Kremlin says its military will simply take what diplomacy doesn't deliver. Yet critics argue that claim and Russian offers of future American investments once the war is over are mostly negotiating tactics. Despite Russian forces going up against overstretched Ukrainian defenses, Russian battlefield advances have come at a glacial pace and with heavy losses. Charles Mainz, NPR News, Moscow.
Chapter 7: How has the recent blizzard impacted communities along the eastern seaboard?
On Wall Street and pre-market trading, Dow futures are higher. This is NPR. The massive blizzard that buried the eastern seaboard has pulled away from the northeast. More than a quarter of a million customers are without power in Massachusetts. People are also in the dark in Delaware and New Jersey. Rhode Island got a record-breaking amount of snow, more than three feet.
From Ocean State Media, Ben Burke has more.
Fall River, Massachusetts sits right on the Rhode Island border. In this city of 100,000 people, ambulances and fire trucks are getting stuck in the snow. Mayor Paul Coogan says medics have had to walk for blocks to fulfill some 911 calls. He's calling in outside help to plow and shovel.
It's going to be a while. I've had regular conversations with the governor and lieutenant governor and They're going to be sending some equipment. We're going to be working with the National Guard. But this is like the blizzard of 78 that you all heard about. This is it again.
Coogan says that blizzard shut down driving for over a week and contributed to close to two dozen deaths across the region. For NPR News, I'm Ben Burke in Fall River, Massachusetts.
The huge wildfire burning in northern Oklahoma and southern Kansas is only about 65 percent contained. Oklahoma officials say the Range Road fire has scorched nearly 450 square miles. That's an area almost the size of the city of Los Angeles. It is unclear how many people have been evacuated.
The family of the late Reverend Jesse Jackson says they've acknowledged a request to allow Jackson's body to lie in state at the South Carolina Statehouse. This will occur on March 2nd. The civil rights leader died last week at the age of 84. I'm Corva Coleman, NPR News in Washington.
