Chapter 1: What updates are there on Bill Clinton's testimony regarding Jeffrey Epstein?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Former President Bill Clinton is set to testify before the House Oversight Committee in New York at this hour as Congress continues its investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Republican Chairman James Comer spoke to the press shortly before the closed-door deposition.
No one's accusing anyone of any wrongdoing, but I think the American people have a lot of questions, and our House Oversight Committee is committed to getting answers.
Clinton's name appears multiple times in the Epstein files. Meanwhile, Democrats on the committee are calling on President Trump to testify in the probe. The president is also named in the files. The Trump administration is ordering the departure of all non-emergency U.S. staff and their family from Israel, citing safety risks.
The directive comes as President Trump continues to move fighter jets and warships to the Middle East to pressure Iran in nuclear talks. NPR's Aya Batraoui has more.
In addition to ordering non-emergency US staff and their families to leave Israel, the US embassy advised that other Americans may also wish to consider leaving while commercial flights are available. A similar order was issued for non-emergency US staff to depart Lebanon earlier this week. Despite these precautionary orders and a continued U.S.
military buildup in the region, Iran and the Trump administration continue to hold indirect talks. The latest talks were in Geneva on Thursday and included the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency that monitors nuclear enrichment. Aya Batrawi, NPR News, Dubai.
And NPR has learned that Vice President J.D. Vance is set to meet with Oman's foreign minister today as U.N.-U.S.-Iran nuclear talks continue. The meeting comes after a third round of indirect talks between U.S. envoy Steve Wyckoff and President Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and Iran. The U.S.
military used a laser to shoot down a Customs and Border Protection drone, according to members of Congress. NPR's Joel Rose reports the Federal Aviation Administration responded by again closing airspace in West Texas.
Three top Democratic congressmen say they were stunned when they were officially notified about the latest drone incident. Quote, our heads are exploding over the news, the lawmakers said in a statement. It's the second time in two weeks that a high-energy anti-drone laser has been fired in the area. Last time, the FAA briefly shut down the airspace around El Paso.
