Chapter 1: What recent military actions have the U.S. and Israel taken against Iran?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Noor Rahm. The U.S. and Israel have carried out another round of attacks against Iran overnight. NPR's Emily Fang reports the airstrikes hit several industrial production facilities and a university in Tehran.
Residents managing to overcome Iran's internet blackout sent videos to Iranian diaspora websites showing strikes hitting several steel and cement factories all over Iran overnight Saturday, including in southern Iran as well as central Isfahan. Earlier on Friday, Israel's military said it had struck a heavy water reactor in Iran, which it said was part of Iran's nuclear enrichment program.
Iran has been firing back in retaliation against Israel, hitting Tel Aviv, and against neighboring countries in the Gulf. Bahrain and the UAE said they intercepted Iranian drones. A worker in Oman was injured after being hit by a drone. Emily Fang, NPR News.
Chapter 2: How is Iran responding to attacks from the U.S. and Israel?
The U.S. and Israeli war in Iran is now a month old. The Associated Press reports more than 300 U.S. troops have been wounded, including 15 wounded in an attack yesterday on an air base in Saudi Arabia. Thirteen Americans have died. The U.S. and other countries are warning citizens of threats against hotels in the Middle East. Iran has issued new warnings regarding hotels in Damascus.
NPR's Jaina Raff has details.
The U.S. State Department says in an advisory that some organizations have relocated staff from hotels in Damascus, Syria. This week, Iran warned it could target two luxury hotels in the Syrian capital. The hotels, which carry the Four Seasons and Sheraton logos, despite no longer being part of those chains, are popular with foreign delegations.
Iran has attacked high-profile hotels in Dubai and Bahrain, saying they're hosting U.S. military personnel who have been evacuated from bases. Australia on Saturday also warned citizens of threats against hotels in Dubai. And in Iraq, some hotels are no longer accepting foreign guests due to the threats, while others have temporarily closed. Jane Araf, NPR News, Amman.
Demonstrations are underway across the country today to show dissatisfaction with the Trump administration. It's no King's Day. Organizers expect a large turnout at rallies in every state of the union and in Washington. Stephanie Stigman is attending the one in D.C. She was asked what brought her there.
Total disgust. I think our country is headed completely in the wrong direction. Unfortunately, we have an administration that is taking us into needless wars, spending money on stupid things like renovations at the White House.
She says she's attended all three No King rallies since President Trump returned to the White House. This is NPR News in Washington.

Chapter 3: What warnings has Iran issued regarding hotels in the Middle East?
Congress is on a two-week recess without finding a way to end the partial government shutdown, which has meant no pay for TSA agents. President Trump has signed an executive order that TSA agents should be paid from reserve department funds. New research finds artificial intelligence chatbots tend to flatter users and validate their viewpoints or feelings, leading to problematic outcomes.
Ari Daniel reports.
Researchers found that numerous AI models affirmed someone's problematic or wrong behavior about half the time. To consider the impact, they had 800 participants interact with an AI about a real conflict from their lives. Those who'd interacted with an affirming AI were 25% more convinced they were right and 10% less willing to do something to fix the situation.
Stanford University computer science Ph.D. student Myra Chang says that companies and policymakers should work together to fix the problem.
But at the same time, I think maybe the biggest recommendation is to not use AI to substitute conversations that you would be having with other people.
Especially the tough conversations. For NPR News, I'm Ari Daniel.
A humpback whale stranded for days at a Baltic Sea resort in Germany has swum free. The whale was spotted Monday in shallow waters. Coast Guard and fire department boats tried to create waves around it. That didn't work. Rescuers brought in excavators to dig a trench in front of it.
Yesterday morning, the whale was on its way out of Lubbock Bay, accompanied by several boats and a Coast Guard ship. I'm Nora Rahm, NPR News in Washington.
