Chapter 1: What are the latest developments in the U.S. Senate race for the November midterms?
Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. 33 seats in the U.S. Senate will be contested in the November midterms. Democrats favored to flip at least one in North Carolina. That's not the case in Oklahoma, though. Grayson Wheeler with member station KOSU reports on a decisive Tuesday primary.
The desk of Oklahoma's junior senator is up for grabs after President Donald Trump appointed Mark Wayne Mullen, Secretary of Homeland Security, in March. Current U.S. Representative Kevin Hearn trounce to the four other Republican candidates in the primary with nearly 70 percent of the vote.
In Congress, Hearn has been a staunch supporter of Trump's policies, earning him the president's endorsement earlier this year. The Democratic primary is heading to a runoff in August. Hearn will face four political newcomers in November's general election. But in a state that's had only Republican senators for more than 30 years, Hearn is heavily favored in November.
For NPR News, I'm Grayson Wheeler in Oklahoma City.
Primary runoff voters in Georgia have set up a closely watched midterm Senate race. Georgia Republicans have chosen Congressman Mike Collins to run against incumbent Democratic Senator John Ossoff this fall. President Trump endorsed Collins over the weekend. Collins' campaign is a self-described MAGA warrior.
The Trump administration says law enforcement disrupted a planned attack targeting the UFC cage-fighting show at the White House over the weekend. NPR's Ryan Lucas is following the story. He says a 19-year-old man from Ohio is among those arrested so far.
He allegedly told the FBI the target was the White House UFC event, and the plan was to fly small drones laden with explosives over the UFC arena on the south lawn of the White House, and then to detonate the drones, to blow them up. The explosions were then supposed to drive the crowd to flee south, where gunmen were to have taken up positions to open fire on the crowd and
and high-value targets. Proper allegedly told the FBI the attack was designed to jumpstart a revolution in the United States.
Fire crews are dealing with wind gusts of up to 45 miles per hour across the Columbia Basin in Washington and Oregon, the region, under a red flag warning. Wildfires sending up massive plumes of smoke. Northwest Public Broadcasting's Anna King reports.
