What did Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth request from Congress about funding for the Iran war?
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was on Capitol Hill Tuesday asking Congress for tens of billions of dollars to fund the Iran war. NPR's Kat Lonsdorf reports on the first public hearing on the war since May.
Hagseth and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Dan Koehn, testified before the Senate Appropriations Committee, defending the administration's request for $87.6 billion in supplemental funding. Much of that money, but not all, is for the war in Iran. It was the first time the Trump administration has faced public questions since the ceasefire collapsed. Senator Patty Murray, a Democrat from Washington state, called the cost of the war astronomical and demanded to know what has actually been achieved.
We hear a different rationale for this war every few days.
She said the request for funds should come through the annual appropriations process and not as an emergency. Hegseth argued the request was, quote, urgent for the immediate needs of the Pentagon. Kat Lonsdorf, NPR News, Washington.

He'll take on Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs in November. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canadian leaders will remain united. He spoke to reporters a day after President Trump announced new 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products.
In response to these actions, this has began over 18 months ago.
How did senators react to the Trump administration's $87.6 billion supplemental funding request?
Canadians from coast to coast to coast have stood together. The federal government, provincial government, labor, business. Canadians themselves uniting, focusing on what we can control, building strength here at home, supporting each other, buying Canadian and diversifying partnerships abroad. We've signed more than 20 economic and security partnerships.
President Trump cited unfair treatment of American products to impose the new tariffs, which are slated to come into effect in 30 days. Carney says he has spoken to Trump and the two agreed to speed up negotiations over the next few weeks. Oklahoma paramedics have responded to at least 29 suspected heat-related illness calls in the state's two biggest cities already this week. Sierra Pfeiffer from member station KOSU reports.
Many Oklahomans are braving a week of triple-digit temperatures as a high-pressure heat dome traps hot air in the region. Local first responders issued medical heat alerts in Tulsa and Oklahoma City after medics treated 13 people with suspected heat-related illnesses in just one day. Adam Palooka is a spokesperson for the state's largest emergency medical service. He says Oklahoma first responders are accustomed to operating in the heat. but paramedics are prepping for more temperature-related calls.
The heat is undefeated against those who aren't prepared and don't take it seriously.
He says the state's crews are ready as high temperatures persist. For NPR News, I'm Sierra Pfeiffer in Oklahoma City.
