What did President Trump say during his state visit to the United Kingdom?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. President Trump wraps up a state visit to the United Kingdom today. He's attending a business reception and holding talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. NPR's Lauren Freyer reports from Windsor, England, where the president spent the night at one of King Charles' castles.
President Trump seemed to bask in the royal treatment. In his toast at a White Thai banquet at Windsor Castle, he said he's proud to be the only US president to get two state visits.
But this is truly one of the highest honors of my life.
King Charles in his toast reminded Trump that the US and UK fought two world wars together, and now
as uh tyranny once again threatens Europe. We and our allies stand together in support of Ukraine.
Ukraine is likely to come up in Trump's talks with Prime Minister Starmer, so may Gaza as the UK prepares to recognize a Palestinian state within days.
How are Syria and Israel approaching a potential security pact?
Lauren Freyer and PR News in Windsor, England.
Syria's president says his country could soon agree to a security pact with Israel, but he says normalization with Israel is not on the table. NPR Shainaraf reports.
Syrian president Ahmed Ashara says security talks with Israel could result in an agreement within the coming days. Syria and Israel are officially at war, but the US brokered meetings this year between the two for the first time in decades. Шара ток повар опозиція тоppled the Syrian regime last year. He says a security pact is necessary to stop ongoing Israeli airstrikes and ground incursions into Syria. The Syrian president says it's too early to discuss the fate of the Israeli occupied Golan Heights. And he says normalizing ties with Israel is not currently on the table. What are the latest details on the investigation into Charlie Kirk’s shooting?
There are new details about the arrest of the man charged with killing conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah last week. Kirk was shot while speaking at an event hosted by his organization, Turning Point USA, at Utah Valley University. Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby says he got a call letting him know that Tyler Robinson wanted to turn himself in.
Part of the negotiation and getting him to bring himself in was that that we would we would treat it as delicate and as soft as possible to make him feel comfortable to where he would he would show up at my office, and that's exactly what happened.
The sheriff says Robinson was afraid he'd be shot by police. A vigil will be held in Colorado tonight for Kirk. His supporters will gather at Colorado State University. Kirk founded Turning Point USA, a group that rallies young conservatives. He was scheduled to speak at Colorado State tonight as part of his American comeback tour, where he planned to visit college campuses across the country. Kirk's widow announced the tour will continue.
