Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. President Trump is set to announce a new Medicaid drug pricing model nationwide to bring down prices. NPR's Emily Fang
has a preview. A White House official told NPR a new payment model for Medicaid to offer lower prices on prescription drugs will be rolled out across the fifty states Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia today. Just under a year ago, President Trump announced a deal with drug maker Pfizer to bring prescription drug prices down. In line with what most other wealthy countries pay for them. The White House leader said 25 other drug companies signed on as well, and a discount drug website called Trump RX was launched. But operationally, most of these companies offer only a tiny fraction of their medicines on Trump RX, often at prices higher than what consumers would pay with insurance. And experts warned this new Medicaid drug pricing model could bring some prices down, but also raise medicine prices for others.
