After a long stretch of uncertainty about President Trump's intentions regarding Greenland, Leaders of this semi autonomous territory and Denmark Are expressing optimism about a new agreement that bolsters the US military presence on the island. Terry Schultz reports.
Danish Prime Minister Meta Frederickson says she's pleased Denmark, Greenland, and the U.S. are planning to sign what she calls a good agreement that recognizes her country's sovereignty and the Greenlandic people's right to self-determination. Frederickson's statement says the New Deal, which is due to be signed next week at the United Nations General Assembly, is beneficial for NATO and Europe. The Prime Minister of Greenland, Jens Frederick Nielsen, agrees it strengthens security for Greenland and Denmark following months of threats from President Trump to seize the island by force. The agreement is expected to update an existing nineteen fifty one treaty, which allows the US to have and expand military bases on the island.
