Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. The latest NPR PBS News Maris poll looks at how President Trump is faring with voters ahead of the midterm elections. NPR Steven Fowler has more on the findings.
Earlier this month at the Republican Party's midterm convention, Trump said to pretend that he was on the ballot. Many voters seem to have taken that insistence to heart, just maybe not in the way he's hoping. Fifty-three percent of registered voters say they'd back a Democrat in congressional races. A majority of those folks say that vote signals opposition to Trump. And a large number of Republicans, including two in five who backed Trump in twenty twenty four, say he is not much of a factor in their vote. The Justice Department uh referred to White House uh uh memos on this, saying that they were upset over coverage of the White House ballroom construction. They were upset about the reports of depletion of ammunition during the war against Iran. They were upset, for example, about uh coverage of the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, saying that it was uh unpopular and hadn't gone well. They said it these things jeopardize national security and spread falsehood.

In a speech to the UN General Assembly yesterday, Trump threatened Iran to make a deal or face annihilation. This morning, Iran's president called out Trump in his speech to the international body, saying Washington does not understand the country. It seeks to quote bully. for China. The priority here is to keep the US pacified without committing to anything. For the US, there's been an overall lack of direction in the Trump administration's approach to China this term, says Eli Ratner, a former assistant secretary of defense in the Biden administration.
They have moved away from that declaratory policy around seeing China as the dominant strategic competitor. They have uh unwound some of the traditional support that we've had uh toward Taiwan and other allies and partners.
A senior administration official said Trump will personally meet Shea on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews as he arrives in the US on Wednesday evening, a sign of the importance of the visit to the president.

A new study finds alcohol use by Americans declined slightly in twenty twenty four and But the results vary by generation. Among older generations, alcohol use continue to increase. NPR Zukunaguchi has this story.
Alcohol consumption, including heavy use, increased dramatically during the pandemic and remains slightly elevated for the U.S. population overall. But the study, which looked at consumption between 2018 and 2024, found younger generations, Gen Z and millennials, alone have steadily decreased consumption since the pandemic. In contrast, among Generation X and those born earlier, Алкогон continued to increase. Consumption for men has returned to near pre pandemic levels, but less so for women.
