What emergency actions did New Jersey take as a nor'easter hit the coast?
Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. New Jersey Governor Mikey Sherrill has declared a state of emergency for the state's coastal communities. A nor easter is bringing high winds, heavy rains, and major waves to the region. In declaring the emergency, Cheryl urged people to take the storm seriously and stay alert.
With this state of emergency, what that means is we will surge resources to these communities, making sure that the Department of Environmental Protection, the Department of Transportation are manning our operations centers because of beach erosion and the high tide and the roads that we are concerned about.
The storm is also affecting states as far north as New Hampshire, severe flooding is expected in some areas. Residents of Hawaii's Big Island are preparing for what could be life threatening flooding from Hurricane Nolo. The National Weather Service says the tropical storm conditions are expected to arrive there late tonight. The hurricane could bring as much as ten to fifteen inches of rain along with winds gusting to as much as fifty miles an hour. And Hurricane Polo is now a category five storm off the Mexican coast. It's expected to come on shore on the Baja California peninsula. President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping wrapped up a state visit Friday. As NPR's Emily Fang reports, they traded praise for each other, but did not address fundamental issues between the two countries.
While showing Xi around the National Archives, Trump told reporters we had a great meeting. Meetings with Xi went great.
How did President Trump and Xi Jinping’s state visit address (or avoid) US‑China tensions?
Trump also posted on social media that he will be heading to the Chinese city of Shenzhen in November to meet Xi again and that she will come back to the US in December for the G twenty Miami Summit. It's an ambitious schedule of in-person meetings between the two leaders of two superpowers. But left unaddressed this visit were ongoing frictions over competition in artificial intelligence and semiconductors and rare earth minerals. Nevertheless, at a state dinner this week, both Trump and she were all smiles and toasted each other. Emily Fang and Pier News.
The CDC's website now lists one death associated with measles as of this week. As MPR's Rachel Carson tells us, the change comes during a resurgence of measles in the country and after weeks of tension among public health officials and the federal agency.
The tension stems from public health experts' concerns about the CDC's reliability. Pennsylvania reported four measles deaths so far in its outbreak in the state. When the deaths were first reported, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. initially questioned whether measles was the cause, and the CDC removed them from the agency's website. The single death now appearing on the site has an asterisk with a footnote and saying the number subject to change after more reviews are completed. It's unclear if this death is from Pennsylvania. Nationally, there have been over three thousand six hundred measles cases this year. Rachel Carlson, NPR News.

Why is the CDC’s single measles death causing controversy among health officials?
Iran Friday said it would reopen the Strait of Formuz and resume talks on its nuclear program if the U.S. agreed to several conditions. Those conditions include lifting the U.S. naval blockade on Iran, waiving sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and observing a ceasefire that would include Lebanon. All those conditions would need to be followed within seven days. Ecuador says US troops helped hundreds of police bring down a dangerous drug trafficking group and pierced Kerry Con reports.
Ecuador's Interior Minister says fifty U.S. troops, together with 350 local police, arrested 39 people, bringing down a local branch of the Mexican CJNG cartel operating inside Ecuador. Earlier this week, Ecuador's defense ministry said the U.S. military assisted in another operation, killing three, including an alleged leader of the Choneros group. The U.S. has has stepped up operations.
What conditions did Iran set for reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks?
With Ecuador sinking six ships since August, which the U.S. says were used to refuel speed boats transporting cocaine.
