Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived home Saturday after three days of talks in Washington with President Trump. Much of the meeting was focused on Pomp and circumstance, but trade was also on the agenda, including a two month extension of a truce important to the US, as NPR's Emily Fang tells us.
This trade truce is regarding rare earths, and this was a truce that was about to expire this November and It had stopped China from cutting the US off completely from rare earth elements which China still dominates. Now the US and China have confirmed they've extended that by two months, so it expires in January, but this is far shorter than both sides were hoping for, and per my reporting, it was because mutual distrust has scuppered the possibility of a longer extension.

The rain is expected to intensify overnight and through Sunday morning, with gusty winds and coastal flooding, and officials say a full moon could worsen flooding. Already a few residents in coastal Queens were kayaking through the streets, and videos show cars entirely underwater around a hotel in nearby Edgewater, New Jersey. She says this Pope goes beyond religion in such troubled times. He's very important for the universe. He's a diplomatic pope also. President Trump Saturday rejected an Iranian offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz if the US stopped its blockade of Iran, waived sanctions on Iranian oil sales, and agreed to a conditional ceasefire. If those conditions were met, the strait would reopen in seven days. In rejecting the proposal, Trump told reporters that Iran is desperate to make a deal because it's losing so badly. The Cleveland Orchestra has gone on strike, as NPR's Ava Pukach reports. Concerts have been canceled and the orchestra's European tour is also in doubts.
