What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston.
What did President Trump say about Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz?
President Trump says he rejected Iran's latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and resume nuclear talks. The offer comes as the two countries are deadlocked over how to end the conflict. Iranian president Massoud Pajeshkiyan tells CBS's face the nation that he's reluctant to meet directly with Trump. He's heard here through an interpreter.
But
How are coastal towns on the Jersey Shore being affected by record flooding and storms?
We reached an agreement on the JCPOA. And after months of negotiations the US President tore it up.
Iran says it could reopen the strait within a week if the U.S. eases military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports. Tehran also says it would allow UN nuclear inspectors into the country as part of a longer-term ceasefire deal. For now, there's no word on when negotiations will resume.
What is the current status of Hurricane Nolo and Hurricane Polo in the Pacific?
For a second straight day, Steve Kestenbaum reports some coastal towns are seeing their worst flooding in more than a decade.
High tides continue to bring more flooding, especially in towns along the Jersey Shore. In Atlantic City, floodwaters hit their highest level since Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Wind gusts reached 60 miles per hour in some areas. A public housing employee in New York died when he was hit by a falling tree branch. Governor Kathy Hokel said dangerous winds will stick around for a while.
What whistleblower allegations are emerging about the Kennedy Center renovations?
It needs to be taken seriously. Tens of thousands of power outages were reported from Maine down to North Carolina. Beach erosion is significant in some areas. High tides were made worse thanks to Saturday's full moon.
What details are known about the recent mass shootings in South Africa?
The Nor'easter is expected to sit around off the coast of New Jersey and Long Island through Monday. For NPR News, I'm Steve Kastenbaum in New York.
Hurricane NOLO is moving away from Hawaii after bringing heavy rain and powerful winds to the islands. National Weather Service meteorologist Frank Pereira says some of the storms effects will linger.
The system did did stay well to the south of the island and it's gonna continue to stay south uh as it drifts uh to the uh west with time over the next day or so. Um and there is gonna continue to be some uh windy conditions across the island.
How are the United States and China planning to manage AI‑related incidents?
As well as some uh rain bands, but it does look like the worst uh of the impacts with that system are over for now.
Farther east in the Pacific, Hurricane Polo is approaching Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Forecasters expected to make landfall Monday as a weaker storm. Polo is also sending dangerous surf toward Southern California. This is NPR News. A whistleblower says renovations at the Kennedy Center were rushed and some of the work was poorly done. The allegations include rusting steel columns and a bathroom floor replace because President Trump disliked its color. The center is now closed for a larger renovation amid a separate fight over Trump's effort to add his name to the building. A federal judge has blocked that change, saying it requires congressional approval. The judges also ordered the center to give thirty days notice before making major structural changes.
Police in South Africa say at least twenty-seven people were killed overnight in two separate mass shootings. Kate Bartlett says mass shootings there are an increasingly common, with another one reported earlier this week.
South African police say the first shooting took place at a bar in a township in Johannesburg where assailants opened fire with AK forty sevens. A separate shooting occurred in a straw near Cape Town. The shootings come just days after an attack on a house party in the coastal city of Durban killed eleven people, including a pregnant woman. South Africa has some of the highest violent crime rates in the world. Often such mass shooting events are linked to gangs or illegal mining activities. Kate Badlet, NPR News,
Johannesburg. The United States and China have agreed to set up a channel for handling incidents involving artificial intelligence. The agreement follows three days of talks between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. I'm Windsor Johnston, NPR News.
