Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. British police have arrested five men near a military air base that's been used by US bombers to strike Iran. They're being held on suspicion of preparing an act of terrorism. Tristan Wilkinson is a counselor for the Cotswold District where RAF Fairford is located. He says police have been on alert in the area.
There was a specific threat about six weeks ago from the Iranians on this base at the time. Um there was an increased surveillance around the area. Um this is an operational base. There is um it's no secret that, you know, we have American bombers here that are taking part in what's happening in the Middle East at the moment.

Her Democratic counterpart, Patty Murray of Washington, called it theft, and the top Democrat on the House budget committee, Brandon.

The rains have caused flooding throughout the region, and at one point power was knocked out to tens of thousands of homes. The storm has also disrupted travel up and down the coast. In Hawaii, meanwhile, Hurricane Nolo continues to move away from the island chain. The storm has now become a major hurricane, with wind speeds topping one hundred and eleven miles an hour. But as Hawaii public radio's Bill Dorman reports, the increasing wind speeds are not causing major damage. The
storm's impacts are lingering. Strong and gusty winds are whipping across several islands, especially Maui and Hawaii Island.
