What are the key issues surrounding the upcoming government funding deadline?

1.263 - 21.263

Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. The top congressional leaders from both parties are heading to the White House Monday to meet with President Trump. The meeting comes just one day before a September 30th deadline to fund the government or face a partial shutdown. As NPR's Barbara Sprunt reports, this comes after Trump canceled a meeting earlier this month with Democratic leaders.

Republicans want to pass a stopgap spending bill to fund the government through November 21st. Democrats want to negotiate in order to provide the necessary votes to put it over the finish line, specifically on the issue of a set of expanded tax cuts from the Affordable Care Act. Those are set to expire at the end of the year.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune told NBC's Meet the Press there's time to address that after the government is funded. Keep the government open and let's have a conversation about those premium tax credits. I'm certainly open to that. The Senate will attempt to pass the stopgap bill Monday evening. City schools in Grand Blanc, Michigan will be closed on Monday following a shooting in a city church during services Sunday morning. Officials say a man identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford rammed his pickup truck into the front door of the church and began shooting. Township Police Chief William Regnier offered praise for those involved with the incidents. I'd also like to acknowledge the heroism of not only the first responders, but the people who were inside that church at the time. They were shielding.

the children who are also present within the church, moving them to safety, just hundreds of people just practicing their faith, just extreme courage, brave, and that's the type of community that we are. Police shot and killed the suspect at the scene.

Police in Southport, North Carolina, have arrested a suspect in a mass shooting that left three people there dead and five others wounded on Saturday night. As NPR's Chris Arnold reports, the attack took place at a riverfront bar and music venue. Police say the gunman started shooting from the water, driving his boat up alongside the open-air dockfront bar and opening fire with an assault rifle.

They said the attack was premeditated, but that the victims appeared to be targeted randomly. Local district attorney John David. The thread that connects everyone who's a victim in this case to this point just appears to be a love of having a good time. And sadly, a lot of the victims in this case appear to be people who are here on vacation.

Authorities say the shooter fled the scene in his boat, but that the Coast Guard spotted a man meeting his description half an hour later. Police arrested area resident Nigel Edge, who's been charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder. Chris Arnold, NPR News.
