Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Janine Herbst. Israel carried out a series of airstrikes today in Gaza, calling it a response to attacks by Hamas. At least a dozen Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers were killed in the fighting. NPR's Greg Myhre has more.

According to the Israeli military, Hamas fired at Israeli troops in southern Gaza, where the troops were killed, as well as the northern part of the territory. Israel called it a blatant violation of the ceasefire and responded with airstrikes in several locations across Gaza. The Palestinians didn't say if their dead were combatants or civilians.

Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of breaking the truce since it came into effect October 10. However, these appear to be the most serious clashes so far. Israeli troops still control over half of Gaza's territory, mostly in open areas outside cities and towns. Greg Myrie, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

93.355 - 97.42 Donald Trump

We're going to go to San Francisco. The difference is I think they want us in San Francisco.

Chapter 2: What recent events have escalated tensions in Gaza?

97.4 - 113.549 Unknown

California State Senator Scott Weiner responded directly on X, saying, quote, We don't want your invading army or ski mask secret police. I can use the Insurrection Act. Fifty percent of the presidents almost have used that. And that's unquestioned power. I choose not to.

157.205 - 174.387 George Santos

I have made a very concise decision to apply that for good and use that to make amends with my community, with my friends, with my family and those who I have left a sour taste in their mouth and hopefully one day get my critics to at least appreciate that I've turned around.

174.367 - 193.472 Windsor Johnston

Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have criticized Trump's decision to commute his sentence, saying the former congressman's crimes warrant more than the less than three months he ended up serving. Windsor Johnston, NPR News, Washington. And you're listening to NPR News.

Americans pay all kinds of taxes to support things like libraries and school improvements, but nowhere in America levies taxes specifically for child care. That could change if voters in three Colorado counties agree to it. Aspen Public Radio's Sarah Torrey has more.

213.999 - 229.282 Sarah Torrey

In western Colorado, near the ritzy resort town of Aspen, the high cost of living makes child care even more expensive than usual. A plan to help subsidize that cost will go before voters this November. Maggie Tiscornia is the director of the group behind the proposal.
