Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Roman.
Chapter 2: What impact does the lapse in SNAP funding have on Americans?
Saturday was the first day of a lapse in funding for the SNAP food assistance program. About 42 million Americans around the country rely on it for help. In Houston, more than 400,000 households will be impacted. Houston Public Media's Sydney Jackson reports.
Chapter 3: What is Proposition 50 and why is it significant for California voters?
With her two dogs Luna and Makito in tow, Itzel Perez waited in her car for roughly three hours at a Houston Food Bank distribution site Saturday morning. Born with spina bifida, the stay-at-home wife got a call telling her that her benefits had been cut off.
There are other people that cannot work or they have disabilities also, and not just other people that they're receiving, but there's other people that are probably more in need than I am.
Two federal judges have ordered the Trump administration to use emergency funding for SNAP, but it's unclear when benefits could be resumed. For NPR News, I'm Sydney Jackson.
Voters in California Tuesday will decide the fate of Proposition 50.
Chapter 4: How are candidates addressing the New York City mayoral election?
It's a ballot measure backed by Governor Gavin Newsom that would allow mid-decade redistricting of the state's congressional lines. Newsom and other Democrats say it's needed because of what took place in Texas and other Republican-led states where the legislature and the governor approved plans to give Republicans an advantage in next year's midterm elections.
At a rally Saturday, Newsom criticized President Donald Trump.
Thank you for what you'll do over the next 72 hours to bring home this historic victory for democracy, for our republic, and send a message to Donald Trump. Hell no, we are done. We are done with being treated like this.
In California, redrawing the congressional lines could give Democrats five more House seats. Candidates are making their closing arguments, this in New York City's fierce mayoral election over the weekend.
Chapter 5: What humanitarian efforts are being discussed for Sudan's crisis?
With former Governor Andrew Cuomo facing accusations, his campaign has turned negative. NPR's Brian Mann reports Cuomo trails the Democratic Socialist Zoran Mandani.
Polls show Cuomo lagging by double-digit margins, and he's tried to catch up to Mamdani by suggesting the frontrunner would make New York City less safe. Cuomo's attacks drew a rebuke from Reverend Al Sharpton, who appeared at an event with Mamdani Saturday. Don't play us against each other, Sharpton said, though he stopped short of endorsing Mamdani, who would be the city's first Muslim mayor.
Chapter 6: How is the government shutdown affecting air travel in the U.S.?
At a stop with a small crowd in Queens, Cuomo said he still has a shot.
New Yorkers are turning out in ways we've never seen before. I think they are frightened of a Mondami mayoralty.
Mondami has mostly stuck to a more upbeat message, promising to address high rents and other affordability issues. Brian Mann, NPR News, New York.
In baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays to win Game 7 of the World Series. You're listening to NPR News. Top diplomats from Germany, Jordan, and the United Kingdom are calling for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan.
They spoke at an annual security conference in the Gulf nation of Bahrain after a paramilitary force seized the last major city in Sudan's Darfur region, killing hundreds. NPR's Lorne Frazier reports.
In a speech at the annual Manama Dialogue, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper announced another $6.5 million in British humanitarian support in response to violence in El Fasher, the last major Darfur city to fall to paramilitary rapid support forces. That's on top of nearly $160 million the UK is already providing Sudan so far this year, Cooper told the conference.
But no amount of aid can resolve a crisis of this magnitude until the guns fall silent. So the world must do more.
She called for an immediate ceasefire, citing what she called truly horrifying atrocities in Sudan, including mass executions, starvation and the use of rape as a weapon of war. Lauren Frayer, NPR News.
The ongoing government shutdown continues to cause major disruptions for the nation's air travel system. The aviation tracking system, FlightAware, says there have been more than 650 cancellations and 2,800 delays just so far this weekend. Airports at major hubs, including Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles International, and Denver, claim the most cancellations.
