Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

1.533 - 21.515 Dale Willman

Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Moments ago, the Senate voted in favor of a procedural vote to advance a measure to reopen the federal government. Under the deal, the government would be funded through January 30th. It also includes full year funding of three appropriations bills, including funding for SNAP food benefits through the end of next September.

So here we are in a situation, and this was the reality. SNAP recipients... suffering, nothing happening on ACA. The vote tonight will be full, and not just last year's, but full and robust SNAP funding for SNAP recipients and a path on the ACA. So from suffering and no path, we've now got robust benefits and a path.

If the final bill is approved this week, it would then return to the House for a vote. There were thousands of flight cancellations and delays today at airports around the country. They occurred as the FAA continues to reduce traffic at some of the country's busiest airports because of air traffic control staffing concerns. NPR's Joe Hernandez has our report.

Juliet Montefusco was flying from Philadelphia to Florida to meet up with her sister and other family members. Her flight was on time, but she said one part of her family got delayed for hours, including five kids.

First time on a plane, first time on a big vacation, first time to Disney, and they had to wait in the terminal for like five hours the other day, which sucks, right, for a bunch of kids that have never been on a plane.

The parents of a Florida teenager imprisoned for allegedly throwing stones in the Israeli-occupied West Bank say his detention has now been extended until mid-December. Mohamed Ibrahim is a U.S. citizen. He was 15 years old when he was arrested and has been held without trial for nearly nine months. NPR's Lauren Frayer has more from Tel Aviv.

This was Mohammed Ibrahim's 10th hearing in an Israeli military court. His father, Zahar Ibrahim, says it adjourned without a plea bargain or trial date. The Ibrahims are Palestinian-American. They split their time between the Tampa area and the occupied West Bank, where Israeli soldiers took Mohammed from his bed last February. In Israeli prison, he's not allowed family visits nor phone calls.

Court documents show he faces up to 20 years for stone-throwing under security rules imposed after the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. Members of Congress have called for his release in a letter that says he may have, quote, signs of torture. The State Department says the U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, is deeply involved in this case. Lauren Freyer, NPR News, Tel Aviv.
