Chapter 1: What are the details of the terrorism investigation involving Ramanullah Lakanwal?

1.246 - 21.178 Dale Willman

Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Willman. Federal officials in a non-profit group say the Afghan man who was allegedly shot, two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., worked with the unit linked to the CIA. The FBI says the suspect, Ramanullah Lakanwal, is now the focus of a terrorism investigation. NPR's Brian Mann reports.

CIA officials have confirmed Lackinwall worked with the U.S. government in Afghanistan. A nonprofit group called Afghan EVAC says Lackinwall served with an elite counterterrorism unit. FBI Director Kash Patel says that history will be a focus of their probe.

Chapter 2: How is President Trump considering changes to Obamacare subsidies?

45.532 - 59.213 Brian Mann

Lackinwell entered the U.S. in 2021 and was granted asylum in April of this year. Officials say the two West Virginia National Guard soldiers injured in Wednesday's attack have undergone surgery and remain in critical condition. Brian Mann, NPR News.

The shooting suspect, meanwhile, is facing multiple charges, including three counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, along with possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. But Attorney General Pam Bondi says that could change.

If something happens, I will tell you right now, I will tell you early, we will do everything in our power to seek the death penalty against that monster who should not have been in our country.

President Trump may be changing his mind about extending subsidies to help people buy health insurance. NPR's Mara Liason has more.

For months, President Trump and Republicans in Congress said the government should not extend expiring Obamacare subsidies.

Chapter 3: What military operations are the U.S. conducting in the Dominican Republic?

98.807 - 114.187 Mara Liason

But now, as a promised December vote on the tax credits nears, Trump may be reversing his position. He is reportedly considering a plan to extend the subsidies for two years with an income cap even though it's not clear that Republicans in Congress would go along with that.

And the president himself said on Tuesday that he would rather not extend the subsidies, but, quote, some kind of extension may be necessary. More than 20 million people benefit from the Obamacare tax credits to help them afford health insurance. President Trump has tried and failed to get rid of Obamacare altogether, but the program has proved tough to uproot. Mara Liason, NPR News.

The president of the Dominican Republic has given the U.S. authorization to operate inside restricted areas in that Caribbean country. That means the U.S.

can refuel aircraft and transport equipment and people through an airport near the capital city. The announcement comes as the U.S. is increasing its military presence in the region because of tensions with Venezuela. New York's Macy's Day Thanksgiving Parade was a success today.

0

166.014 - 190.334 Dale Willman

Hundreds of thousands of people turned out for the annual event that featured dozens of balloons, floats, clown groups, and marching bands. The parade began on Manhattan's Upper West Side and ended on 34th Street. This is NPR News. firefighters in Hong Kong are continuing their efforts to find dozens of people still unaccounted for following yesterday's massive fire in an apartment complex there.

At least 75 people are now dead from the fire that burned in seven of the complex's eight apartment buildings. Dozens of others were injured.

Chapter 5: What can individuals do to reduce food waste during the holidays?

198.448 - 211.485 Dale Willman

Officials say extreme heat continues to slow the rescue operations. It's Thanksgiving, and for millions of Americans, that means buying, cooking, and eating a lot of food. It also means tons of food waste, and Pierce Jacqueline Diaz explains.

0

211.605 - 230.867 Jacqueline Diaz

Thanksgiving is the biggest day for food waste in the U.S. That's according to the Natural Resources Defense Fund, an environmental advocacy group. Roughly 200 million pounds of turkey meat are thrown out every year. But food waste is a year-round problem. Ted Janicki is a professor at Penn State who studies this problem.

If food waste were its own country, then it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.

0

237.214 - 242 Jacqueline Diaz

Those emission figures are from all stages of the food system, from farm to landfill.

Chapter 6: Who was Fuzzy Zeller and what is his legacy in golf?

242.76 - 255.775 Jacqueline Diaz

Food tossed into landfills piles up, breaks down, and produces methane, a greenhouse gas. But there are things we can do, including composting food and freezing leftovers. Jacqueline Diaz, NPR News.

255.755 - 279.568 Dale Willman

Golfer Fuzzy Zeller has died. The Masters and U.S. Open champion was one of golf's most gregarious characters, as well as one of its biggest boosters. But his career was also marred by a racially insensitive joke he made about Tiger Woods during the 1997 Masters. He later said that moment would never go away. Fuzzy Zeller was 74 years old. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
