This is the biggest shopping weekend of the year in the U.S. As NPR's Matt Bloom reports, retailers are seeing steady turnout despite some headwinds.
At the Lakeside Shopping Center outside New Orleans, shoppers came out in droves for a sip and shop event, which offered champagne for customers. Grandmother and granddaughter Sandra and Lacey Lemoine said they were having a fun day together. Take your grandma to the mall and make memories with her because it's the best thing to do. It's all about memories.
A record number, nearly 170 million people, are planning to shop in stores or online between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, according to an annual survey from the National Retail Federation. And they appear to be spending big. Adobe Analytics, which tracks online transactions, says sales this year are topping last year by more than 9%, despite rising living costs and worries over tariffs.

Airbus has ordered urgent modifications to its widely used A320 jets. Because it found intense radiation from the sun, could cause a flight computer to malfunction. British aviation safety investigator David Gleave says this should be resolved quickly.
Many of the aeroplanes just require a software update, so that takes about three hours on the ground. There are some aeroplanes that actually need to change the electronic box that controls the tail surfaces. I believe less than a thousand aeroplanes are affected. out of the 11,500 that are active at the moment in terms of the world fleet.
So we could see about a 10% grounding until this is sorted out.

Chapter 3: How are retailers performing during the biggest shopping weekend?
Ukrainians in Kyiv are cleaning up after Russian missile and drone attacks overnight. Two people were killed and dozens more were injured. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley reports.
Residents of this Kyiv housing complex are busy repairing after the attack. 42-year-old Oksana Honohan is sweeping up with a tree branch broom. She says nobody slept all night. Within a second, very quickly, a drone was flying and we went to the shelter. Utility workers are reconnecting electricity and plumbing. Residents line up to get plywood boards cut for their blown-out windows.
I asked Honohan how Ukrainians keep rebounding. We're Ukrainians, she says, that's it. No matter how hard they hit us, we will survive, if only to make them angry that we're still alive. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Kyiv.
This is NPR News in Washington. The investigation continues into Wednesday's deadly fire in an apartment complex in Hong Kong. At least 128 people died. At least 150 people are still missing. Police have made several arrests. Investigators want to know why the fire alarms never sounded. They also question the safety of some of the materials used during renovations.
Authorities in Indonesia say the death toll from heavy rains and flooding driven in part by a tropical storm has now topped 300, and they're warning that number is likely to rise. Michael Sullivan has more from neighboring Thailand.
Rescue workers are still trying to reach some of the hardest-hit areas on the island of Sumatra, with damaged roads, bridges, and downed communications lines hindering those efforts, as is a lack of heavy equipment. Relief aircraft have started to deliver aid to some of the worst-hit areas.
The governor of northern Sumatra's Aceh province, devastated by the 2004 tsunami that leveled many cities and towns, has declared a state of emergency. and the head of the National Disaster Management Agency is warning he believes many more bodies have yet to be reached.
