Live from NPR News, I'm Janine Herbst. Authorities say two people have been killed, eight others are in critical but stable condition. After a shooting at Brown University today, the suspect is still at large. NPR's Lydia Kalitri has more.
Providence police say the shooting took place around 4 p.m. outside the Barris and Hawley building, which houses the School of Engineering and Physics Department. School officials say final exams were taking place at the time. Deputy Police Chief Timothy O'Hara says authorities are searching for a suspect described as, quote, a male dressed in black.
We're utilizing every resource possible to find this suspect.
A shelter-in-place order remains active for the university and surrounding areas. Lydia Kalitri, NPR News.
Israel says it's killed a senior Hamas commander, one of the architects of the October 7th attacks on Israel. And Piers Adil Al-Sholchi reports the strike took place near Gaza City today.
The Israeli military said it has killed Ra'ad Saad, a Hamas senior official who Israel says was the second in command of the group's military wing. A video released by the Israeli military showed an airstrike on a vehicle they said Saad was riding in. Hamas did not confirm Saad's killing, but in a statement condemned an Israeli strike on what they called a civilian vehicle west of Gaza City.
Hamas did not say who was in the vehicle. Saad's killing would be the highest-profile assassination of a Hamas leader by the Israeli military since a ceasefire deal was reached in October. He was a close ally of Azzedine al-Haddad, who took over Hamas's military wing after Israeli forces killed Mohamed Sinwar last May. Hadil Al-Shalchi, NPR News, Tel Aviv.
U.S. Central Command says three Americans, two service members and a civilian interpreter, were killed in what it calls an ambush in central Syria today. Three others were injured. President Trump is vowing to retaliate against ISIS without specifying how. Officials say the gunman was also killed. Floodwaters are receding across parts of Washington state after days of record rainfall.
