Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Corva Coleman. Australian federal and state leaders say they've agreed to review the country's strict gun laws. This comes after yesterday's mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration at an Australian beach. Fifteen people were killed and dozens of others were wounded, apparently by two suspected shooters.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lyons says one of the suspects was a member of a gun club.
He had a Category AB license, which entitled him to have the long arms that he had as registered firearms.
That suspect was shot and killed by Australian police. The second suspect was seriously wounded. European leaders, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and President Trump's negotiating team are meeting for a second day of talks in Berlin. NPR's Rob Schmitz reports they're seeking agreement on a plan to end the war with Russia.
Zelensky has made it clear his country is willing to compromise on certain issues, including giving up on hopes that Ukraine joins NATO. He said he'd be willing to consider that if Ukraine won strong security guarantees from the United States to prevent Russia from invading again after a peace deal would be reached. Zelensky said Ukraine does not want to cede any territory it now controls.
That was a suggestion made by the Trump administration. Sunday's meeting between Zelensky, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner lasted five hours. There are still major gaps between the latest American and Ukrainian plans to try and end the war, though, and there's no indication that Russian President Vladimir Putin will agree to any plan to end it.
