Chapter 2: What recent actions has President Trump taken regarding Venezuela?
President Trump has announced he's ordering a blockade of oil tankers going to and from Venezuela. NPR's Danielle Kurtz-Laban reports Trump provided few details on the order as tension grows with Venezuela.
Trump made the announcement in a social media post, which also said that Trump is planning to grow what he called an armada of U.S. vessels off the Venezuelan coast. The more than 200-word post accused Venezuela of stealing, quote, oil, land, and other assets from the U.S., but did not explain what he meant by that, nor did it give any details on the announced action.
Chapter 3: How are Americans feeling about their financial situations in 2025?
The White House did not immediately respond to NPR's questions about the post. Trump has in recent weeks suggested he would start strikes on Venezuelan soil soon. However, as White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles acknowledged to Vanity Fair in an article published this week, any land attacks would require congressional approval. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News.
A new poll from NPR, PBS News, Marist finds that Americans are struggling financially. Seventy percent of respondents say the areas that they live in are not affordable for average families. The poll also finds that only 36 percent of respondents approve of President Trump's handling of the economy.
Chapter 4: What are the implications of the murder charges against Nick Reiner?
Trump says he'll give a nationally broadcast speech tonight but didn't say what he'll discuss. Vice President J.D. Vance visited Allentown, Pennsylvania yesterday in an effort to highlight White House work on economic issues. But his visit comes as there are growing signs of voter frustration. From member station WITF, Jackson White reports.
Yolene Scott makes about $25 an hour working in health care.
Chapter 5: What recent events are affecting U.S. military personnel and their families?
She says that isn't enough to cover the bills for her and her 11-year-old son.
It's like you can't live anymore. Electric bill is high. Gas prices are high. It's like you're just working to pay bills.
Scott moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania eight years ago to escape the high prices of New York City. She's an independent voter who supports President Donald Trump. But Scott says she hasn't noticed a difference in prices since he entered office again this year. Scott does expect to benefit from Trump's tax cut on overtime pay. For NPR News, I'm Jackson White in Harrisburg.
Los Angeles prosecutors say they're charging the son of slain Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle with murder. Steve Futterman reports from Los Angeles Nick Reiner may appear in court today in L.A.
We expected Nick Reiner to appear in court yesterday, but it was delayed since he had yet to be given medical clearance. Today, court officials will try again. The hearing is likely to be brief, with Reiner being formally told of the charges.

He could also enter a plea. The two first-degree murder charges carry a maximum sentence of death, but the district attorney says he has not yet decided if he will seek the death penalty.
Steve Futterman reporting. You're listening to NPR. President Trump will go to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware this morning. He'll witness the dignified transfer of remains of two Iowa National Guard members. Sergeant Edgar Torres Tovar and Sergeant William Howard were killed during an attack in Syria over the weekend. Ayan Sakat of Michigan was working with them as an interpreter. Many teachers are turning to detection software. They want to check whether students have done their own schoolwork or used artificial intelligence to do it for them. But reporter Lee Gaines tells us the detection software doesn't always work.
Numerous studies show several of the most popular AI detectors flagged some things as AI-generated that weren't, and vice versa.
Chapter 7: What are the reactions to ticket prices for the Men's World Cup soccer tournament?
Nonetheless, NPR found that some school districts from Utah to Florida to Ohio are spending thousands of dollars on these tools. John Grady teaches English at Shaker Heights High School outside Cleveland. He knows AI detectors aren't perfect, but one thing he likes about the software... It's something to kind of hang your hat on, the way we did with the plagiarism checker.
where I can say, like, look, it's been flagged.
Grady says he doesn't only rely on AI detectors. He also uses revision history tools to see how student assignments developed over time. For NPR News, I'm Leigh Gaines.
FIFA says it will sell a very few Men's World Cup soccer tournament tickets for $60, but fewer than 2% of available tickets will be priced that low. Fans have been outraged at prices for next year's soccer tournament in North America. This is NPR.
