Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Hey, it's Bob Stauffer. I just wanted to let you know that you can listen to Oilers Now ad-free on Amazon Music, included with Prime. All right, it's 5.34 in oil country. Welcome back, everybody. Bob Stauffer with you, along with Eamon Hashim, who always makes me chuckle sometimes, and Aidan Ganim, and Kellen Kennedy, the whole crew is here. Royal Pizza, pizza that passes so much more.
Edmonton-owned and operated almost now for 60-plus years. And you can add 8 or 16 pieces of their new mango habanero wings to your order today. Only a limited time. For a menu and list of their locations, visit royalpizza.ca. Where the staffer recommendation is Mediterranean chicken. Ryan and Kyle and the staff at Royal Pizza will take care of you. Yeah. Oh, man, oh, man. You know what?
I think John Shannon, actually, I'm pretty sure John Shannon one time joined... Myself and Cam Mood and our special haunt, Pub 1905 in the Wine Room in downtown Edmonton. And may have had a 7-up or two that night as we discussed all things. I also remember the day before Todd McClellan was fired and you and me were hanging out, John. I think we were at Roost Chris that night.
John Shannon's appearances are brought to you by Legacy Heating and Cooling. Home of no payments and no interest for a year. That's how you build a legacy. Legacy Heating and Cooling. Hello, John. How are you? I'm great, Bob. How are you? Good. What do you think of all of this with the Vegas Golden Knights? Actually, you know what? We're going to replay the clip again one more time here.
This is Kelly McCrimmon after he met with the commissioner in the morning doing his media availability last night as the head coach and GMs do before the start of the conference finals. Here is Kelly McCrimmon providing us with an update on the status of Bruce Cassidy.
Secondly, regarding Bruce Cassidy, teams have asked for permission to speak with Bruce. We've been consistent that our focus currently is on the Stanley Cup playoffs and the teams have respected that. I've spoken with Bruce. He understands this as well. There you go. What's your take on all this?
Gamesmanship? No. Even though he has been dismissed as the coach of the hockey club, he is still under contract for another 13 months with Vegas. They're paying him a hefty bit of coin to stay at home and not be involved with the hockey club. So they still do control him in so many ways. And when he signed his contract, that was what was supposed to happen. Do I think it's wrong?
I think it's wrong. He should be able to go and...
interview and negotiate a new deal and and then work out the compensation you know in so fact that if it's more or less of what the golden knights pay but the golden knights don't want to be distracted with those discussions right now they want to be involved in the stanley cup playoffs and at a certain point even though i don't agree with it you'd have to respect what they're doing particularly if they've explained it to bruce all right so what do you think is going to happen when vegas's season ends

Chapter 2: What insights does John Shannon share about the Vegas Golden Knights?
So is Bruce Cassidy the best coach not currently coaching an NHL team, John?
Good question. I would suggest that he would be near the top of the list. You know, I think that there are, and I want to use this word correctly. I mean, when you talk about retreads, a guy like Peter Laviolette, I just don't see him fitting in in Edmonton. From that perspective, I've read a couple of things from people about Mike Babcock. I'd be disappointed if the team hired Mike Babcock. Why?
Because I think the game is different now. I think the game is, the pendulum has shifted to having the players have an active role in a lot of the decision-making process.
You don't think Babcock could have evolved?
No. No, I don't. Have you evolved?
No.
I have, but I also not banked $75 million.
Now, that is fair, but I mean, I broke into this business 35 years ago, John. You're a hard-ass producer. I never got the privilege of working for you directly, but I love guys like that because I wanted to be pushed and I wanted to be good.
So I love that, right? The question becomes, Bob, is it's not bad to push. But there has to be give and take in the push. Yes. And I'm still not. And listen, I'm fully transparent. I had arguments with people in Columbus about the hiring. Yes. Of Babcock at that point. You were well connected at that time to the people in Columbus.

Chapter 3: What is the significance of Bruce Cassidy's coaching status?
For you, Babcock's a non-starter. Yeah. I will be honest with you. I don't know Berube well. You know, and there is one other thing we need, just back to Knobloch for a second here. Glenn Dolson. Is there any way to underscore how significant his contributions were in Chris's first two years?
I think, you know, when you look back on it and you listen to Glenn, he talks about how much he learned from Chris Knobloch. I would suspect that if Chris Knobloch had a... You know, a Molson Canadian and sat and told you some stories, he'd say he learned just as much from Glenn Golitsyn. You know, Glenn Golitsyn is a heck of a coach. He deserved a chance to be a head coach again.
And he wasn't going to get the coaching job in Edmonton based on two years into the Stanley Cup final and then Chris getting an extension. So he had to go and find one in another city.
How many times did they pass by him? Like, they passed by him with... Bringing Hitchcock in as an interim coach, they passed by him when they hired Tippett, they passed by him when they brought up Woodcroft, and they passed by him when they brought in Knobloch.
And so, you know, sometimes, you know, maybe there needed to be greater appreciation for, and he had, he clearly had a good relationship with Connor and Leon. There's no debate about that.
Well, when you look at the success of, you know, the power play, you know as well as anybody that a lot of that was through the mind of Glenn Gullitson. So who, okay, let's just say you can't get...
you're never going to get permission, even though you do think at some point Vegas will relent and the Oilers will get a permission. Yes, I do think they will relent. John, I got to tell you, I think like you, okay? And part of the reason why I think like you is this is a slippery slope here. Like, do the other 31 teams at some point call up Gary and say, Gary, they've played by their own.
This is not Kelly McCrummon in the WHL where he bullies them. Like, they've played by their own rules. And if this, then we're all going to sit there and adopt that policy. And the lead does not need that. So at some point here, I'm like you. I think that I get it. It's on their timetable. That's kind of how Kelly operated in the WHL. That's why I like him.
That's why I had him number one for the job when Bob Nicholson fired Pete Chiarelli. Okay. Because I know how Kelly's wired and he's smart and he works his ass off. Like he's all in. And he at times will do stuff that will make people uncomfortable and And sometimes executives need to do that.

Chapter 4: How do coaching changes impact NHL teams?
Watch that game in Evola, British Columbia at like the only bar that had a TV. And, yeah, we actually walked on that contract. It was not my decision. I was working for a company called Suga Reforestation, Pete Gomerud, Lawrence Taylor. And one of the guys from Calgary bet Pete, who was an Oilers fan, that, you know, the Oilers would lose the game. It was a $50 bet. So...
Anyways, he made a comment. Well, I may have lost $50 in the game, but at least I didn't lose $50,000 walking on the contract. So it was something to that effect. I forget the exact line. But, yes, I remember it well. The Oilers, they got off to a good start in that series in 87. Went up 3-1. Tank game 5 at home with a 3-1 lead. Headed into the third. Flyers came back. It went to 7, May 31, 1987.
One of the greatest days. in the history of oil country. Brennan Escott is with us. Hello, Brendan. Why don't we turn up your mic? You know what? You've worked with me so long. You know half the time I'm just like rambling and sleep at the wheel here. Well, I played the waiting today by Tom Petty. Now, I did find John Shannon's comments interesting. He thinks this will eventually get resolved.
At some point, the orders will be allowed to talk to. John has pretty good sources in the league, and he said that he used the term comeuppance. to describe what happened with Vegas yesterday. That's interesting to me.
Yeah, I mean, how long are we going to watch them toe the line and toe the line and step over the line and dart right back over? And it's just, it's kind of a cat and mouse game and they got their hands slapped by the league. So we'll see where this goes. I'm not of the belief that they're going to withhold his support
ability to work forever but i can sort of see why right now they don't want the distraction okay what do you got uh coming up tonight on inside sports uh sports nest kyle bakoskis at 6 35 uh adika peter mcneely on the edmonton stingers in the nba at seven o'clock and then john dance to talk about the alberta summer games at 7 35 now are you doing you're doing an event there are you not
Yeah, I'm MC in their opening ceremonies. Good for you.
Thank you. Yeah, well, and I guess we're not carrying the games of the two semifinals then. Because we used to carry 6 to 8 at 6 o'clock. We used to carry all the games of the conference final here on 880 Chet. We no longer do that. Instead, we're getting you. That's good. Yeah, 100%. Happy to bring it. All right. Tomorrow, Aiden, what do we got going tomorrow?
Ron McLean will join us and John Shannon. We've got a little bit of fluidity, but it should be Louis DeBrusque. What about Bruce? Oh, yeah, Bruce Kerlock, not John Shannon. That's two minutes for me. That's a penalty.
