It was presented by Sentinel Storage. Try four weeks free. Visit sentinelsstorage.ca for details. All right. Krusty Rusty says, Hey, Bob, just a question. Was the coaching okay when the Oilers made it to the two-cup finals? Maybe ask Leanne O'Connor. Yeah, the owners had a good coaching staff in those two years.
And they got some bounces, and they were, in spite of the hymen injury, healthy for the most part, to the best of our knowledge. So, yeah. And this past year, they won 41 out of 82 regular season games and got beaten six by the Anaheim Ducks. So take it for what it's worth. But that is fair. It is fair of you to sit there and say, well, wait a sec here.
Why would Leon and Connor call out Knobloch after going to the Stanley Cup finals the last two years? But I think there was some concern from day one on the makeup of the... coaching staff sort of a moot point now the change has been made 537 in oil country all right let's re-engage the ashley fine forest text line bob uh would you call jordan kairu or alexis lafreniere distressed assets Hmm.
And when are the changes going to get made? You suggested maybe we might see a little bit different looking front office a couple of weeks ago. Well, I'm sure by July 1st, that'll be the case. But I, you know, I think we might see some changes. We'll have to wait and see. Can the Oilers get a top six forward without offloading Darnell Nurse? Potentially.
Depends on what you spare elsewhere in your lineup. Without further ado, for legacy heating and cooling, whether it's heating or cooling you need, get it with no payment, no interest for a year. That's how you build a legacy heating and cooling. We welcome back to the show John Shannon, our NHL insider. Hello, John. How are you? I'm great, Bob. Living the dream. You're living the dream.
You know what? My good friend who had passed away in the fall, John Sexsmith, always used to say, we're dreaming to live. Living the dream, dreaming to live, right? Yeah. Puts things in perspective some days. All right, so let's do this. Because you have very good league sources, we know that about you, you presented a scenario last week at this time. You do believe at some point here that,
John, that Bruce Cassidy will be able to interview for jobs. Is that right? Yes, I do. I do.

Chapter 2: What insights does John Shannon provide about the Oilers' coaching staff?
Did we lose John there? Did he drop for a second? Hold on a sec. See if you can renegotiate contact. We can make him... The first Bionic man, the first six. There we go. I think we got him again there. Do we? We're good. John, you were saying about Bruce Cassidy and the Vegas Golden Knights potentially at some point giving teams the ability to meet with him.
Yeah, I do think it will happen. I think what you're looking at in many ways, and part of this is my own personal opinion on how the Golden Knights do business, is creating a level playing field. And the level playing field is when hockey is over. And so there are no advantages given to any teams looking towards the future and plotting things for the future.
Well, the Golden Knights, for the sake of argument, are still playing hockey. So I do think and do expect at a certain time that George McPhee and Kelly McCrimmon will grant Bruce Cassidy an opportunity interview. And let's be honest, Bob. Whether it's tomorrow or two weeks tomorrow, does it really change anything? And the answer is no, it doesn't.
Well, as long as it's before, say, June the 25th. Why? How many coaches do you know that are effective at the draft? Okay, but you've got to plan for free agency too. Yeah, I know. You need a week to do that. Not to mention, for all we know, Nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
For all we know, maybe there's a player that's a UFA right now that the owners are waiting to hear back from, and he wants to know who the coach is.
Well, and in fact, if Bruce was under contract for any team, and if he contacted a player, that would be conflict of interest. The fact that he's not... He could do it now. There are different ways to look at it. I understand your logic about the 25th. I think that...
probably the logic too that the golden knights are are holding and saying that yes but the level playing field is that all 32 teams aren't playing all 32 teams are planning for the draft all 32 teams are planning for free agency so do you because there's some people that believe edmonton los angeles will never receive permission are you suggesting that you envision every team will receive permission at some point yes i do
The caveat of you can't trade within your own division, I think, will be tossed aside at some point.
Yeah. And here's why I mentioned June 25th as a date, because if the Stanley Cup final starts either July 2nd or July 4th, and I'll go with June 2nd or June 4th. So let's just say it's June 4th. Well, realistically, two weeks from June 4th takes us to June 18th, okay? Yeah. And at that point, I'm thinking, my guess is Cassidy gets hired within a week from that point if there's jobs out there.

Chapter 3: How can the Oilers improve their roster for the upcoming season?
You know, this was what really jumped out at me in so many ways. We've always viewed Colorado as a deep team. And particularly in the forward position, you know, particularly after the trade deadline of the last two years when Chris McFarland was going out there and finding new bodies, whether it be Brock Nelson or Nazem Khadri.
But with the McCarr injury, they ended up looking rather thin on the blue line. 100%. And, Bob, you need eight or nine quality NHL defensemen. And this is, by contrast, look at what the Golden Knights have. I mean, Dylan Coughlin. Ben Hutton. I mean, these guys play seven games a year. Ben Hutton's been there five years as their organizational 7-8 D-man.
And Ben Hutton might get his name on the Stanley Cup twice. And that's just smart management. That's smart depth management. Players are happy to contribute when they can. They've got a great lifestyle. It is an amazing story that what Vegas has been able to do.
And when you compare how in the end Colorado looked on its blue line when McCarr was less than 100% and even with injuries or suspensions, you know, the Golden Knights were able to put some quality defensemen in the lineup. That to me was the biggest difference.
What happens with Jared Bednar? And does what happens with Chris McFarland perhaps be a factor in what happens with Jared Bednar? What do you think? Tony, I was mentioning this to somebody this morning.
You know, we've all heard the rumors of Chris McFarland and Nashville. Nobody will say anything. Barry Trotz is sitting at the Memorial Cup right now having a good time. So they've obviously figured something out. So from that perspective, if Chris McFarland is leaving, do you dare remove another pillar of stability from your organization and the coach?
That would be a hard one for me to stomach if I was Joe Sackick or anybody in avalanche management. You don't want...
change like that tectonic change like that particularly after you won the president's trophy if mcfarland stayed you know we've all heard also heard the stories that you know the shelf life of jared bedner's done i find it hard to believe because bob jared bedner would be out of work four minutes if not less It would be comparable to what we saw when Bruce Cassidy got fired in Boston.
Bruce Boudreau got fired in Anaheim or Washington.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of Bruce Cassidy's potential job interviews?
Jared Bednar was, we were talking about what a great job Jared Bednar did against the Minnesota wild four games ago. Now, all of a sudden we're talking about Jared Bednar being removed. Crazy. It's the silliest thing I've ever heard. And, and, and by the way, there are five teams licking their chops, hoping that the, the, you know, the Cronky family decided they've had enough of Jared Bednar.
John Shannon for legacy heating and killing John J. Woodcroft. Where's the higher probability Toronto. I think he's got a legit shot, or Los Angeles with Ken Holland.
So the question for Kenny would be, are you better off with Jay Woodcroft bringing in a new coach, or would you be better off with DJ Smith, who knows your team right now? Is Jay a better coach than DJ Smith? I believe that Jay is a better coach than DJ Smith, but by how much and how long would it take? I think Kenny has a true affection for Jay because of his time together in Edmonton.
But I do think, from the way you put it, I think that Jay might be a perfect coach for the Maple Leafs for the next three years. Now, here's the thing, Bob. When you get hired to be the Maple Leafs coach this time around, you're lasting three years before they feel that they're back on top and then they're going to go try to find an elite coach.
Unless Jay proves that he can be that elite coach, he's going to be fodder. He's going to be the Jeff Blaschel of Detroit. Because that's just the way coaching goes right now in the National Hockey League. That's just the way it happens. I do think Jay has grown up a lot. I do think he's matured. I think that that last six to eight weeks in Edmonton as the head coach were a mistake by him.
I think he thought he was more important to the process than he really was. And, you know, he had great success early on. And that can't help but go to your head. You know that as well as I do. It goes to your head.
And I think the amount of time away from the game and then this year standing beside Joel Quenville and watching a true legend of the game coach, I think has made Jay Woodcroft a better coach. And I think anybody that hires him will see that instantaneously.
You know, John, it's interesting. I put a tweet out that said, for what it's worth, not sure how, but the Edmonton Oilers make it happen. For what it's worth, not sure how the Edmonton Oilers make it happen. But in my opinion, the Oilers need to target a legit top six forward via trade, possibly a distressed asset in another team.
I never mentioned on Twitter or on the show, Jordan Cairo, and somebody saying I said Jordan Cairo. I read a text from a listener saying, what about Jordan Cairo and Alexis Lafreniere? Oh, the Twitterverse today. Isn't it crazy?
