Chapter 1: What reports about Mike Babcock are being discussed?
Hey, it's Bob Stauffer. I just wanted to let you know that you can listen to Oilers Now ad-free on Amazon Music, included with Prime. This is Oilers Now. We are helped out on the show by Aidan Ganim, Derek Scott, and Kellen Kennedy. And there's no surprise as to what our top story is for legacy heating and cooling. Home and no payments and no interest for one year.
That's a bill, the legacy, legacy heating and cooling. The story broke courtesy of Darren Drager. A couple of days ago on Monday involving that the Edmonton Oilers were exploring options pertaining to one Mike Babcock. And I certainly made no bones about it. But my understanding was that Babcock was the Oilers guy from ownership to management to management.
The players, players being a significant part of that. Last night, I think just prior or maybe during the course of Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final, tweets came out that an investigation that the NHL PA had requested. Hmm. that the NHLPA had requested an investigation of Mike Babcock to the events in Columbus. This was the tweet that came out.
The NHL is from Pierre Lebrun, who is on the show today. This tweet came out this morning saying, the National Hockey League is moving ahead in its investigation of Mike Babcock and the events in Columbus as per NHLPA request. Hmm. And then Frank Cervalli, who has been very strong on this issue really since Monday night when he said that the Oilers blew the timeline.
It was ironic because he was certainly a guy a week earlier who spoke about Babcock's abilities as a coach. But today, Cervalli tweeted out, if the Oilers elect to continue down the path with Mike Babcock, sources say the NHLPA is in receipt today. of significant additional claims from their own investigation with the players that were not publicly reported in 2023.
Those claims were presented to the NHL prior to his resignation. Furthermore, sources indicate that asking the players to see photos is not what ultimately resulted in Babcock's resignation. It was a subsequent unknown allegation reported that cost Babcock his job with the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.

Chapter 2: What investigation did the NHLPA request regarding Babcock?
The players involved, et cetera, in 2023 will have to be interviewed. If Backhawk were to back out of this stage, a league source says there would be no reason to investigate. some might say it's starting to appear as though there is a concerted effort from the NHLPA specifically.
I mean, we have to assume that they're the source for some of the information on this, that there might be a little bit of a push here to try to convince the Oilers otherwise. On an individual who has no record, has not ever been charged with ā we have players in the league playing right now that at one time were charged with assault. Some of them were playing in the Stanley Cup final.
And in the end, ultimately were proven to be innocent. But what about ā is there an attempt here to sway the court of public opinion ā
I find it ironic that as the Oilers were losing to the Anaheim Ducks in round number one of the playoffs, they had many people say, why would Stan Bowman not have gone out and got an experienced coach like Joel Quenville, who, of course, was with Bowman in Chicago.
Now, some of you, many of you originally did not want Bowman to be the head coach of the team without actually knowing the full story in Chicago. I would suggest most of you listening to this show right now have very strong opinions. You have great passion for the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club. I'm going to hazard a guess that...
Under 10% of the people out there have actually ever met or talked to Mike Babcock during your life. And probably, other than hearsay, don't actually know what occurred in Columbus. Okay? I don't 100% know, but I do think that due diligence was likely done by... members of the orders organization. I'll take it one step further here.
We know based on Mark Spector's piece that he wrote yesterday in the, in Sportsnet, a very fair and balanced piece, may I add, that certainly the players had, the key players, the key leaders on the orders had an opportunity to speak to Mike Babcock. You'd be naive to believe that they didn't ask tough questions like what the heck happened in Columbus and,
And their conclusion upon that was to say, and I'm paraphrasing Speck here, but yeah, Babcock's our guy. We want to be pushed hard here. And that is part of this as well, is, you know, is there a little bit of a situation where we have maybe an older group of players, a more mature group of players that would desperately want to win. And they believe that Babcock can help them win.
And he's the right guy. And you'd also be naive to believe that the players only spoke to one potential candidate. My guess is they did speak to more than one potential candidate for the job. I know that some people said, well, what about the timing? Sarah Valley brought that up as well on Monday in a spirited and animated discussion that many of you probably thought was really good radio.

Chapter 3: What claims were made against Mike Babcock before his resignation?
The coaches have to be better. It's the first thing he said. That's a big red flag. Then McDavid. against the Tampa Bay Lightning talking, waxing poetica and effusively about John Cooper as a coach. And then McDavid, when the season was over, right after the game, we were only an average team this year. And then McDavid and Drysaddle talking postseason.
And they did not limit their comments to, you know, they sort of spoke in more of a global term, but they were talking about the team as a whole not being as good. And you've got to look at that when you're top two players and assume that your top guys have a pulse on the rest of the team, okay?
Which is conversely why I would say to you, when we open the show as strongly as we did on Monday, Mike Babcock is the order's guy from ownership to management to coaching. you'd be naive to assume that the top players were not involved in that decision-making process, which makes this pretty interesting with this push from the NHLPA.
And DulƩ have a couple guys that are being the band leaders to push back on Babcock, even though they're saying, well, it's really up to the league to decide. Okay? So now we wait. That's all you can do. All right, here's what we're... And again, I get... There's lots of you out there that hate this. Okay? You do. Some of you might look at it and say, you know what?
It's funny how many actual hockey guys I've spoken to this about, like guys that have played at various different levels, and they're like, I totally see why that makes sense. In fact, we are going to go into the Oilers Now Audi Vault right now at 420.
The Oilers Now Audio Vault is brought to you by Direct Workwear. In these tight budget times, Direct Workwear is the superhero your wallet deserves. Cute selection, low prices at Direct Workwear.
Jamie McLennan was on yesterday's show. We talked about the best players wanting to be pushed.
Yes, 100%. The best is always looking for a competitive edge. They're always looking. They push themselves. And I'll give you an example. I played with Chris Pronger, and Chris Pronger was known as a fierce competitor. And he was very demanding as a captain. He was demanding of you as a player, but he was demanding of himself for perfection.
and he pushed everybody it was uncomfortable sometimes and there were some hard conversations but in the end the respect was there because you knew he wanted what's best for the group and he wanted to win and i think that's the scenario best players always want that competitive edge and again i come back to a guy like connor and leon if they feel that the
