Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 40.131 Bob Stauffer

Hey, it's Bob Stauffer. I just wanted to let you know that you can listen to Oilers Now ad-free on Amazon Music, included with Prime. Brought to you, as always, by Equus, Alberta's largest power co-op. Choose community. Choose Equus at EQUS.ca. Royal Pizza, Pizza Pass, and so much more. Edmonton-owned and operated for 55-plus years. Now, my recommendation is the Mediterranean Chicken.

Brendan Escott likes the Texan. You can pick up the new Spicy Vegetarian only for a limited time at one of the 15 Edmonton-area Royal Pizzas, royalpizza.ca. Craig McTavish. All right, Mac T., Does the NHL do enough to protect their star players in comparison to the NBA? In the NFL, you can't hit the quarterback. In the NBA, they call fouls against star players. Star players are allowed to walk.

0

68.008 - 77.642 Bob Stauffer

They get away with a little bit more than the regular. Or does the NHL have the right mixture? You tell me. Where's your headspace at with this?

You know, it would be interesting to see what the dialogue is between Wacom and his foot soldiers, of which Shane Hires, a buddy of mine, I play a bit of golf with him in California. So I'm always – they're very loyal to one another. But it would be interesting to see what that dialogue is. I mean –

And it's incumbent on the player, like Connor, who has a lot of power in this league because of his stature and the way he conducts himself, that he can level some influence with the officials. I remember Wayne. I mean, Wayne, he was all over the officials. He was hard on the refs. He was really hard on them. You guys were a lateβ€”

126.712 - 152.196 Craig MacTavish

After the games and that, he'd be getting a stick down there and they'd ask for something. He built the relationship off the ice and then he tortured them on the ice. But he would embarrass them if they, you know, and that's back in the day when you could hook and hold. So the calls were fewer and farther between. Now it's, you know, there's a much...

152.868 - 160.143 Craig MacTavish

different standard than there was back in those days. But you're right, he doesn't get a lot of calls.

160.223 - 162.668 Bob Stauffer

And he doesn't embarrass the officials on the ice either.

163.049 - 188.566 Craig MacTavish

No, but he's starting to get more assertive in the way that he conducts himself against the opposition. It's been 11 years, only 10 or 11 years now. But, you know, you see the fight back in him now. It's quite a bit different than it was a couple of years ago. You know, now he just he doesn't care who you are, whether he played a month ago. You were on the same line with Team Canada against him.

Chapter 2: What does Craig MacTavish think about NHL's protection of star players?

222.038 - 241.085 Bob Stauffer

But back then, you guys practiced every day, right? Yeah. And I look at Guy, and I'm like... They're teammates. And best friends. And best friends. And they're just giving it to each other. Like, Mark leaned in and kind of clipped him a bit with his shoulder and got low in the chin and low spun around and two-handed him across the wrist.

0

241.726 - 257.207 Bob Stauffer

Then Messi turned around and stuck him back and jabbed him in the ribs. And then Kevin gave it back to him. And I'm like, I don't know if I'm quite built that way. Elite competitors, put it that way. Did that happen occasionally in your guys' practices? Was that a regular?

0

257.227 - 272.321 Craig MacTavish

Yeah. Well, there were times when, you know, if the team's not playing well, I mean, there was a standard there that you're bringing it to practice if it's not happening during the game. And those guys were leading the charge. And back in, I mean, Wayne, he loved to practice, too.

0

272.461 - 284.412 Craig MacTavish

I mean, you think he was good during the games, you should have seen him in practice, the stuff he would do in practice. The guy was incredible. And loved to practice, a lot of emotion, a lot of energy. Yeah.

0

284.392 - 310.011 Craig MacTavish

Kevin and Mark played a different game than Wayne, but when they had to ratchet up the intensity in the practice, and what was Derek Sanderson's famous line when they asked him, who's the toughest guy you've ever played against? He said, Ted Green in practice. Well, Ted Green was on that coaching staff, and he could give you that scowl that let you know very quickly that he needed more of you.

310.43 - 339.34 Unknown

A 67-year-old grandfather fails to show up for a meeting with his son at a local tire shop, sparking a desperate search. And he wouldn't be the only victim. I'm Global News crime reporter Nancy Hixt. You might listen to a lot of true crime podcasts this year, but they're not crime beat. Season 8 drops April 21st. But you can hear the first story now, one month early, only on Amazon Music.

340.18 - 358.119 Bob Stauffer

Well, Louie DeBrusque got that skull a few times from Ted Green over the years when Louie was on the team. I think he might have been playing on your line with Bucky at the time. All right, so you do like that Connor's been a little bit more assertive. Chris Knobloch is not a guy that berates the officials. Like, we've not seen Chris go after the refs.

358.179 - 376.134 Bob Stauffer

He's in his third year as head coach in the NHL. He has a lot of respect for the – my point is – I don't know if, like, Jay Woodcroft, I believe, once got a penalty for arguing the time of a goal. This is the story that I'm told now. I don't know if that's true or not.

376.675 - 377.177 Craig MacTavish

I was there.

Chapter 3: How did Wayne Gretzky influence officiating in the NHL?

456.218 - 460.505 Bob Stauffer

You guys got – you were in the box the whole game. It was awesome. You're like, we're just going to waste this.

0

460.605 - 480.123 Craig MacTavish

I was a yeller, though. You were a yeller? Yeah. Okay. Yeah, and I could never do that today. I just am not wired that way anymore, but back then I was. Yeah. And Andy Van Helleman used to say, hey – You know, he'd come over and he goes, I don't mind a yeller. I don't mind you yelling at me because I know where I stand with you.

0

480.483 - 507.549 Craig MacTavish

And, you know, and Paul Dvorsky, who is my all-time favorite referee, I got yelling at him one day and he's going, you know, Mac, when have I ever screwed you? And that shut me up pretty quick because he always was pretty good to me because he played junior with my very good friend. And they were buddies. A buddy of mine from California, Steve Slack. Okay.

0

507.91 - 536.119 Craig MacTavish

Yeah, but so he always gave me the benefit of the doubt. So when I was yelling at him, he quickly put me in my place. And Terry Gregson, I used to go at it with him and he just, he was more of a... You know, kind of a Christian guy. And, you know, like the stuff out of my mouth was anything but, you know, Christian. And he was just, Craig, I feel bad for you.

0

536.892 - 563.271 Bob Stauffer

you know and that kind of shut me up i remember uh george carl called isaiah thomas a jerk a jackass and an a-hole and i opened that up with a line with you and i go hey back to you george carl called isaiah thomas a jerk a jackass and an a-hole has anybody called you that it goes yes you every day from four to six on your radio show oh man it was funny stuff good comeback yeah but

563.251 - 570.34 Bob Stauffer

Did you have any rivalry with any coach? Like, I can't think that Mark... Well, I hated Hartley. Robert Bob Hartley?

570.881 - 590.507 Craig MacTavish

Yeah, and one of the hardest things I ever had to do was at the draft, after they won the Stanley Cup, he's on the beach with the Stanley Cup, and I had to walk by him. And it was like two male dogs walking by each other, you know? It was just like, congratulations, Bob.

591.652 - 612.448 Bob Stauffer

So, Bruce Kerlock does our prospect reports every Thursday, watches games all over the place. This is a guy that runs an oil patch company. Like, he's doing pretty well. Totally under the place. I'm sorry, Bruce. I just sold out. But, you know, he's in the oil and gas sector. And the owners have Maxine Bereshkin, who's playing. And Bob Hartley is the coach. But this is the first year.

612.468 - 631.429 Bob Stauffer

So, last year, you know, Bereshkin had a really good year. And this year he's got Hartley and he's not having such a great year. And I'm sitting there talking to Bruce. I'm like, well, you know, they do have Bob. Cause I've never thought that Bob Hartley was the warmest guy either. He had a little bit of, uh, and a little, a little arrogance. Is that fair?

Chapter 4: What insights does Craig share about practice intensity among elite players?

935.591 - 950.617 Craig MacTavish

Not close. This guy is so far and away the best player in our game that it just blows my mind that he's not... I saw the odds the other day, and he's like a dark horse to win. And what do you have to do?

0

950.737 - 953.602 Bob Stauffer

Is it McDavid fatigue? Is it they're tired of it?

0

953.662 - 966.638 Craig MacTavish

Well, it's just that he's so good, they think that he's got to outperform... Everybody else. His best year. Yeah. And if he's not at his best year, then they, which is just insane.

0

966.658 - 993.006 Bob Stauffer

So Bouchard has 10 more points than any other defenseman. Bouchard, five on five with Edmonton, plus 24, 56.23% expected goals for. McCarr, plus 31, 54% expected goals for. Without Bouchard, the owners are minus 32 and at 48% expected goals for. Without McCarr... The Avalanche are plus 54, okay? And they have a higher expected goals for when he's not on the ice this year.

0

993.787 - 1012.412 Bob Stauffer

I'm here to tell you Kael McCarr is the best defenseman in the league. He is. But this year, Bouchard, and by the way, they played the exact same amount of time on the penalty kill. So, now, it might be Wierenski, it might be Darlene. Wierenski makes the case. Yeah, and in Bouchard's case, you said it to me during the break. It's the gaffes, right? Like that goal against LA.

1012.552 - 1039.348 Craig MacTavish

It's hard to see that, isn't it? That guy is so good. That, you know, be the occasional five-star blunder that you go, okay, that's why I can't win the best defensive player in the league. But he's definitely the best offensive defenseman in this league by a lot. And the value of a guy that can wire at 150 feet, tape to tape, in the air, flat, land it flat, is incredible.

1039.328 - 1066.703 Bob Stauffer

immeasurable and uh nobody does it better than him he moves the puck better than he is a great athlete you talk about a guy you said greg simpson evan bouchard can golf he can shoot the hoop he can throw footballs like he is yeah soccer whatever they call that stink ball whatever stupid game they play before the games where they warm up anyways i'm just it's all good all right here's how fluid the situation is because we don't know who edmonton's playing we also don't know three of the four western conference series start on sunday i believe um

1066.683 - 1074.674 Bob Stauffer

But there's a chance there might be an opening game Monday. It could be here in Edmonton. It could be the Oilers on the road. It could also be the Oilers playing Sunday night.

1075.054 - 1087.851 Bob Stauffer

So you're either going to be here with me in this exact same spot for a game on Monday, or you're going to be joining me in studio because the Oilers are playing Sunday and Tuesday potentially at home, or I'm going to be on the road. I don't know what's going to happen, but you're going to join us next Monday?
