It started on the kitchen stove. It appears like a pan of grease was there.
Blumpton says when firefighters got there, they found a mother and her four children huddled together unconscious upstairs. Chapter 3: How did Blackie get involved with Walter Peters' case?
Oh, if I didn't have to handle this wheel, I'd make you come back.
You're big enough to have a good chance of doing it too, Bess. But I've got to find out what this is all about. Hey, you. You down in the galley. Yeah? You wanted to see me? I most certainly did, and do. Look, who are you? Who wants to know? I'm Boston Blackie. Oh, you're Blackie, huh? That's right, and I think you're Walter Peters. Only Peters is dead. I saw him in the morgue myself.
Now, what goes on here? I can't tell you on account of best, but look, Blackie, I'll meet you later. Keep your shirt on. I'll be in your apartment at 4 o'clock this afternoon. Blackie, either get out of my office or start walking up and down. You're getting me dizzy. What's your excuse when I'm not here? Now, listen, Blackie. You listen. I'm getting a call from the FBI any second.
They think they've got a lead on who Walter Peters was. What I want to tell you is that Walter Peters wasn't anything. He is. I saw him an hour ago on a tug. Walking up and down is making you dizzy, too. I saw him on a tugboat. I talked to him. He wouldn't crack on the tug, but he said that he'd meet me in my apartment at 4 o'clock.
If Walter Peters comes up to your apartment at 4 o'clock, there'll be four guys carrying him. That's probably the FBI. Hold everything. Saturday speaking.
Inspector, this is Jameson, Harbor Squad.
Yeah, Jameson. What happened to Walter Peter's body? What happened to Walter Peter's body? Well, it's in the morgue. That's what happened to it.
Oh, is it?
Well, I'm calling from the morgue now. The guy in charge ain't here and neither has Peter's body. What? If it's not you, I'd know something about it. So long, Inspector. I know, I know. I heard. Well, pal, what goes on from here in? You still think I didn't see Peters? Oh, this is all I need. First, the guy has fished out of a lake. Only his clothes have salt water in them.

Chapter 4: What clues suggest Walter Peters might still be alive?
Well, that was fast, Blackie.
Yes, it was. I'm glad I stopped by. I've got some information. Even if I don't know what it means. Let's see. If it's 2 o'clock now, I haven't the floor to keep my appointments. We're going down to the waterfront, Mary.
Are we? What floor? To get a lead on the Peters case?
That's right. If he is really dead, I want to know who killed him. If he's alive, I want to know what's going on. And I have an idea one person can give me all that information. A girl named Bess.
Bess.
Faraday. Faraday, listen. Blackie, go away. Far away. We'll play a game. You get lost and nobody will look for you. Blackie, don't bother me. Kid, if you think you've been bothered before, listen to this. This is missing. This? The gal I told you about. The one that owns that truck. Not only is she missing, but the tug is gone, too. Neither of them are here in my office. Why bother me?
She's the key to this whole case, Faraday. I'm down at the waterfront now.
Nobody's seen her or the tug since this morning.
Now, I want you to call up the Harvard squad and try to find out what happened to her. She's the gal who called for Peter's body at the morgue, isn't she? That's right. Well, what's making you so sure she's the key to this case? Well, I've just figured out something. Peter's was a smuggler. She ran a tug. This thing's beginning to make sense. Not to me. It's making sense, not miracles.

Chapter 5: What role does Bess play in the mystery surrounding Peters?
What do you believe? I think Bess killed whoever it was that was supposed to meet you. You told me yourself she didn't want you to talk to him. She knocked him off, then faked his swimming business so it would look like he tried to kill her. You say Bess is safe? She's in the Willis Hospital. Claims she's suffering from shock, but she's faking it. You want to see her? You bet I do.
I think you've got this thing all lopsided, pal, and I'm going to straighten out that case and you at the same time.
Oh!
This is the room, Blackie. Bess is in there. Thanks, pal. You're a pal. Come on in. Hello, Bess.
Hi, Blackie. Glad you're here.
I'm glad somebody is. Blackie, this dame is trying to tell me that Walter Peters tried to drown her just now. Doesn't she know we know he's dead?
Wait a minute, Faraday. Danny Peters is dead. Walter Peters tried to kill me.
Now, that's really wonderful. As if I understood what you were saying. I can tell you, Faraday. Danny and Walter Peters were twins, right, Bess? That's right. They had a smuggling racket going.
Danny Peters would get his luggage examined at the customs, get it okayed, disappear for a moment, and Walter Peters would take his place going through the gate, his luggage all fixed up with counterfeit seals. Good figuring, Blackie.
