Joining us on the show today is a wonderful friend, a repeat guest, and most of all a A Genius, I would say. Um Yes, so as Paulo Snorny An author, a podcaster, a global research leader on banking and financial markets, multi times author, I must say. And the reason why I say he's a genius, you will find out very soon. He is embarking on a new Literal adventure. So welcome to the show, Paolo.
Thank you, Theo, for inviting me. I'm really excited.
I am absolutely excited. So um can we unveil now? So Paulo Yes. So Paulo is releasing his next book, but this one is not about financial markets. It is about a sci-fi thriller, something around AI and quantum. Um so I'm gonna leave you to describe what exactly are you writing? What is this novel about? What are the topics that we can look forward to? And What are you trying to convey in this novel that um a regular IBM white paper can't? Because uh you're a prolific writer, Paulo. I admire you for it. You the the way you narrate. a very complex topic, the way you narrate a story, all of that I have seen and I admire you for it. I I don't know anyone else who can write and explain the way that you do. But now this is completely different.
So how do you do that?
So well I've been used to connect the dots. That is my my quality. Um you can't think right but in a sense it's important to understand, you know, when things relate uh or not uh to get the the narrative uh grounded in the right way. And This last is very different because uh it's not just uh a business book where in any case uh delve into theoretical perspectives as the foundations uh in first principles of everything that we want to do, but this is uh literary fiction and this is the latest proof copy, Quantum Sapiens, and and now is there And it is a scientific and philosophical literary fiction that wants to engage uh the readers around uh some of the most important uh topics uh that uh are heavily discussed right now.
On the world stage. There's no government and no corporation, no dinner table that doesn't talk about this.
How does Paolo connect his fintech background to the mystery of human consciousness?
Can AI be conscious? Is Chat GPT uh a another being with his own emotions or feelings or uh is a full make believe and what is the evolution of that? So I try to explain uh through narrative uh um different theoretical perspectives around the origin and intensity of human consciousness and the power of technology in a way that uh no PhD required everyone can access uh a piece of uh the scientific debate but also everyone can be more capable of uh understanding uh what is noise and carried out from the conversation. I feel that most of the debates uh I see and hear are not really grounded uh into a proper perspective. And so in a sense, why literary fiction? Because in this world where we are imagining the future, we need to learn how to
Elude the imagination the right way. So we keep on imagining the future, but we grind we ground this imagination and we steer it towards a more uh, if you like, uh sober and uh value-based perspective. So we need to have a framework for that, and that is what quantum sapiens wants to basically. Bit.
But it's taken you a few years to write this one, right?
Well, in in terms of uh when I really put the first white page in front of myself, uh, 'cause I still work on paper and not just tapping on the keyboard, I'm an old man in that respect. And and and today, five uh years and six months more or less uh went by. And but but in reality, the roots of this work uh are much, much deeper. I think it's like uh more than twenty years of research. Because um I always researched upon a the complexity that we face in making the right interpretation of financial markets, which is a big piece of reality. And the bias that we encounter when we try to do so is And uh and after being an entrepreneur in uh um like startup through the fintech movement, an entrepreneur in a large bank, now I would say an entrepreneur ID as uh in IBM.
