Why did Susan and Stu write All the Difference right now?
There's a lot of disrespect in the world right now. And it's not just for others. It's also for ourselves. And so I think a lot of people feel small or not good enough, or they can't speak up, that their voice doesn't matter. And then when they do, it's like everybody around me is an idiot. Those are not helpful pathways to think. And so in the moment, we want people to come back to a place of, hold on a minute. I bring something and it's up to me to ground myself in exactly what I do bring and also hold that there's so much that I don't know and that I can't see. It's returning to that place so that we can keep conversation open.
Welcome to Open Book. I am your host, Anthony Scaramucci. Joining me today is Stuart Kleinman and Susan McEntee-Brady. Title of the book is All the Different Six Leadership Actions to Bridge Perspectives, Strengthen Teams, and Create Value. First of all, to both of you, congratulations on the book. Thank you. And a lot of fun to read it. I know Stuart for a long time. Full disclosure, he was my roommate in law school. Yes. We had three of us living in the same house. Stu was the messy one, Susan. I just want you to know. Here we go. We had one Felix and we had one Oscar from The Odd Couple.
Wait, so were you neat? No, I was like in the middle. Okay. He was the perfect, perfect moderating force.
Just like now. Yes. The mean of normalcy. I was the mean of human normalcy. Okay. All right. But, but we probably shouldn't go there because Stu and I have a lot of stories and we both have a lot of stories. Susan, you know what I mean by that?
If I let off a pin, the hand grenade will blow off, his hand grenade will blow up, etc.
I kind of want to let you guys just do your thing, but let's talk about the book.
I want to start with you, Susan, if you don't mind. Why this book right now? First of all, it's such a relevant topic. How did you guys come together to write it? And tell us about the core themes. And also, I think this book is going to have a cultural impact. So tell us about what's going on in the culture right now, which led you to write the book.
As every day passes, this book becomes more important. And I say that with utmost humility. You know, look, I think leading today requires a different way of showing up. And the speed of, you know, access to artificial intelligence is impacting human beings in profound ways. And we got to do a better job of being human. And part of that is understanding where other people are coming from so that we can create value together and work together more effectively. And so I think the world is waiting for, I think we need a new leadership playbook. I also think this book will help people in any circumstance of relationship, you know, untangle a little bit of why that relationship might be difficult if in fact you don't see things eye to eye.
You know, most people see differences as a threat, right? I think that's, you know, you have a difference, have a threat, and then we do something where, especially in politics, we start demonizing each other. Okay, so you disagree with me, so let me demonize you. So what is the message that you're conveying in the book which I think is a mind shift, frankly. And if we could get more people to go in that direction, it would be societally very beneficial.
Well, a goldmine of opportunity. A goldmine of opportunity. So if you have a group of people or even one person who sees the world differently, who might have different relationships with communication, with problem solving, with risk taking, different generations, we're surrounded by difference. And I think The winners in the future will be those who can figure out how to get everybody on the same page to work together as a team to create the most value from whatever you're trying to do. But Stu, what's your version of the answer?
Yeah, I mean, look, difference is gravity. We can't wish gravity away. Difference is just here. And it is here and in the workforce. It crosses, as Susan said, every way we can think about defining difference exists in the workforce.
