Hello, I'm Yinka Bikini and welcome to Out of Frame. Do you love a good film? Of course you do. But have you ever wondered what it takes to pull a blockbuster movie together? All the hard work and creativity and mind-blowing talent that it takes to make cinema. Well, this is the place to find out. Each week, I'll be stepping into Crew HQ, a training center based at the heart of Warner Bros. Studios' Leavesden, to speak to the incredible people from below the line in TV and film, people who are responsible for bringing the magic to your screens. This is Out of Frame.
Whenever I settle in to watch a good action or thriller movie, one thing I do expect to see is some impressive stunts. Whether it's Spider-Man jumping off a building or John Wick knocking out four men at once, we all are aware that films like this require the talent of a stunt double. But who looks after the stunt people? Who makes sure that what we see on screen is seamless and, more importantly, everyone is safe? Well, that's where Justin Burr comes in. Justin is a stunt rigger and he's worked with the likes of Universal Studios, the BBC and, of course, Warner Brothers. Justin, or as I know you like to be called, Jay. Welcome to Out of Frame. Hello. I'm really excited to have you here, not only because you've got the best beard I've ever seen in my life.
Thank you. It's freshly straightened last night.
Yeah.
But you also have such an energetic energy that I think talking to you is going to be really fun. But before we get there, I would like to ask you a couple of questions so that myself and the audience can get to know you better.

I've got two questions which will give me a better insight into what the film industry means to you.

What was the last film that you watched that really inspired you?
A film that I've worked on recently, probably, Paddington 2. Because, you know, it's probably my favourite film to date to work on, even though it was so busy. The crew were amazing. The actors were amazing. Sometimes you just, everyone gels. You know, there's no awkwardness. Everyone knows their job. Everyone knows what they're doing. And that's just one of them jobs. I had a fantastic time.
What is the first film that you remember watching that left an impact on you?
I'm going to say The Pursuit of Happiness.
Why?
There's a scene in the film where Will Smith's in there in the toilet with his son. And that to me was just like a fantastic scene, you know, especially as I've got kids myself, four. You know, it was just, you know, underdog goes, comes good. The Rubik's Cube scene, amazing. I love a Rubik's Cube. You know, just a couple of bits in that film that just, you know, I always say when we're filming something and you're on set, And you've got all the cameras around you and you've got 100, 200, 300 crew around you. If you can believe what you're seeing and forget about everything, that's a good film.
Jay, a lot of people will be familiar with what a stunt person is for.
Yeah.
But if we start with some of the basics.

What kind of work is a stunt double used for and where do you come in?
The stunt men or women can be doubles for an actor or actress. Look similar, height, build. They will have a job to play when their stunt coordinator, who is basically our boss or head of the stunt department, thinks that what they're going to do is too dangerous for cast. So then they will get a double in to do it. That's basically... very quickly in a nutshell the doubles job the double also works very closely with the artist actor actress to work with them on fitness you know they'll be with them on set all the time whether it's pads you know if they do get in a harness they'll be with them then so you know they've got a pretty important job to play yeah and do they work with the actor or actress when it comes to sort of trying to mimic mannerisms or is that not as important as the safety of the stunts
