Today I have a great guest who's written a we all like talk about hiking as a topic here of the podcast. She's written a book for National Geographic. Um, it is called 100 Hikes of a Lifetime USA: The Country's Ultimate Scenic Trails.
And the author is Stephanie Pearson. And Stephanie is here today. Thank you for being on the podcast, Stephanie.
Thanks for having me, Bob. I'm excited to be here.
Yeah, and I've got this book. It's a In hardcover, it's a big heavy book, so you're gonna wanna take notes and maybe um not carry this with you in your pack because it's a pretty heavy book. But um it's a wonderful book. I'm happy to say that I've hiked some of the trails on here in the western US. Um, you list Angel's Landing and uh um uh doing uh Walter Wiggles up to Angel's Landing and going out to Angels Landing, which is uh um in an adventure. In itself. I'm doing that one in Zion National Park. Part you have the co I believe you have the Continental Dubai Trail in here, which I've done. A segment here, a segment there, you've done all these segment I've done all the segment. So I want to start off with one of the basic questions I have here.
I get a lot of these guidebooks in the mail. There's a lot of them out there. And they're all great for different reasons, but what makes yours special. What makes yours a unique book uh uh that people w are gonna wanna buy and use to go planning their trips?
First I would like to say that it's National Geographic Photographs, so it's beautiful photography and it's it's I I would think of it more as an aspirational book rather than a guide book per se. Um I you know, I do include some tips and some strategies, but I it's not a book that you would, like you said, take in your backpack and bring along. Um But I I do try to touch on the cultural highlights of a lot of trails, some of the history and You know, maybe some of the things that people wouldn't necessarily get in a specific guidebook. Per se.
So instead of being a go to point A and then turn right here and go to point B, it's more of these are just great n it is it does list them as ultimate scenic trails. So obviously these are places with great views and and stuff that you picked out.
Yeah, and also I very deliberately chose to include a hike in each state as well as in each um you know, i in each US like in Puerto Rico and Guam. So everywhere is represented. I I lived in the Southwest for a long time and am from the Midwest and I just I realize oftentimes that we have sort of a West centric focus or an East centric focus and I really wanted to democratize that a little bit with this book and show that there are really beautiful parts of our country no matter where you live.
I and I think that's important too because I like the Midwest, um, you look at the uh you know, the the Great Plains states are not considered necessarily places for great hiking because there's Little less federal land than there is on the west or the east, and there's a lot of farmland, a lot of private land, and people don't necessarily think of those as and I'm right on the border of that here in Colorado.
