So viewer discretion is advised. And with all that being said, let's talk about the life and death of legend Amy Winehouse. Have you ever heard of an exclusive club that people are literally dying to get into but no one actually wants to be a part of? It's called the 27 Club and it includes a list of famous celebrities who all died tragically young at the age of 27. And more often than not, these people are at the height of their careers when they die. And while there's no statistical evidence to suggest that more stars die at 27 years old rather than any other age, we can't deny that there is a strange and eerie pattern. The pattern was first noticed by music fans in the 1970s, but it became even more popular with the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994.
And then in 2011, when Amy also died at 27, the club got even more attention, and especially because the internet was a thing then, it really became the conspiracy that we know now. People were genuinely starting to wonder if there was some dark, sinister link connecting these famous deaths. The club's first recognized member was a blues musician named Robert Johnson, who was big back in the 1930s. The story goes that Robert was actually terrible at music to begin with. He couldn't sing, he couldn't play the guitar, in fact the guitar that he did carry around was all beaten up and scratched and it was like missing a string. And he would play so badly, I mean he loved playing so he would keep playing but people would boo him off stage, people didn't want to hear him.
And so one night he just took off into the night. Legend has it that Robert Johnson walked the lonely roads until he met the devil at a crossroads. And he made a deal with the devil, he sold his soul in exchange for an abundance of musical talent. And sure enough, when Robert returned home to Mississippi and stepped into the spotlight, he played like no other had ever played before. He was incredible. All of a sudden. He rose to fame, his songs were recorded, and he became a musical icon of the era. And he actually still has, I had to check his Spotify. That is such a Gen Z thing to do, but like, how many Spotify monthly listeners does he have? 300,000? Almost 100 years after his death. I think that's crazy.
But in order to make such a deal with the devil, you have to pay a high price. And for Robert Johnson, the price of fame would be his life. He died at the age of 27, apparently poisoned by a mysterious stranger. And for the last 90 years, his life and death have inspired the beginnings of the 27 Club conspiracy.
