Chapter 1: What events led up to the tragic murder of Holly Newton?
On a cold January morning, 15-year-old Holly Newton waved goodbye to her parents and set off to school for the very last time. That afternoon, as she walked through the quiet town of Hexham with her friends, laughing, chatting, thinking she was safe,
Not all was as it seemed, because in the background, someone was following Holly, keeping his distance, watching where she went, waiting until she was alone. And what makes this case even more disturbing is that the person stalking Holly wasn't a stranger to her. He wasn't a grown man lurking in the shadows. He was a child himself. And by the end of that day, he would become her killer.
Hello, and welcome to Outlaw Podcast. I'm Eleanor Neal, and in today's episode, we're in Northumberland, in the northeast of England, where in January, 2023, the small, quiet town of Hexham became the scene of an unthinkable attack. Just yards from a busy main road, 15-year-old Holly Newton was lured into an alleyway by someone that she had been trying to escape for months.
And just minutes later, Holly's mum received a phone call from her daughter, only when she picked up, it wasn't Holly on the other end. It was a stranger, letting her know that her daughter had just been stabbed. But this case isn't only about what happened in that alleyway, it's about everything that happened before it.
The warning signs, the fear, the attempts to escape and get help, and how the threat around Holly escalated from frightening to fatal in a matter of hours. Now, before we get into the case, I just want to give my usual disclaimer that I mean absolutely no harm or disrespect to anyone that we talk about today.
Our episodes are made with the utmost care to honour those who lost their lives and to respect the profound grief that their loved ones endure. By covering these cases, we aim to keep the victims' names and stories in conversation and highlight the vital work that so many of their loved ones do in the wake of their deaths.
Given the nature of today's episode we will be covering some very sensitive topics including the death of a child, extreme violence, coercive and controlling behaviour, self-harm, suicide and suicidal ideation and domestic abuse. This episode is created with the hope of raising awareness, inspiring change and furthering victim support. Viewer discretion is advised.
Now let's go all the way back to the start of this case, to when the beautiful Holly Newton was born. Because before we get into the events of January 2023, I want to tell you about who Holly was. Not just what happened to her, not just the case that followed, but the daughter, the sister, the friend, the young girl at the centre of all of this.
Holly Olivia Newton was born on December 3rd, 2007 in Durham. She was the first born daughter to mother Michaela, who was just 18 when she had her. And the way that her mum talks about that is so sweet. She says that her and Holly essentially grew up together since she was still so young herself when she had her.

Chapter 2: How did Holly's relationship with Logan escalate to violence?
I think for someone like Logan, who had a really turbulent upbringing, being part of such a loving, healthy family dynamic must have felt really new and comforting. Holly really cared for Logan as well. She would help him in every way that she possibly could, knowing that he struggled a bit more than her in everyday life. She would read books to him and with him to help improve his reading.
But what started out as a seemingly normal teenage relationship soon took a very dark turn. By late 2022, Holly and Logan had been together for just over a year when cracks in their relationship began to show, both to the people around them and to Holly herself. Logan's behaviour was becoming increasingly concerning. He hated it when Holly would spend time with anyone else that wasn't him.
Whenever she did, he would bombard her with phone calls and texts. He would constantly be asking where she was, what she was doing, who she was with. He'd even message her brother to ask if she was in her bedroom, if she was at home, and if anyone was there with her. It had become genuine surveillance and it was actually quite scary just how possessive he would get over her.
She was only 15 and she was constantly having to worry about how her actions might make her boyfriend feel and how he might react. Holly, of course, started to feel so trapped. While she should have been enjoying life with her friends and family, she was instead carrying the weight of this controlling boyfriend.
She tried to end the relationship several times but Logan would threaten to end his own life if she left him. And this, of course, is a classic abuse tactic, emotionally blackmailing someone to stay by making them feel responsible for your life. But Holly was 15. She wasn't equipped to recognise that as abuse. She was a child just trying to keep someone alive.
So time after time, she took him back. Holly later confided in her parents about these threats from Logan and she said that the reason that she was still in this awful relationship is because she wouldn't be able to live with herself if he did go through with it. It was really starting to visibly affect poor Holly.
She was lower energy, she wasn't as bright and fun as she had been, it was draining the life out of her and everyone could tell. During those times that Holly had tried to end the relationship, Logan would call and voice note her incessantly, upwards of 50 times a day. He would even contact her friends and beg them to persuade Holly to change her mind and to just talk to him.
He was coming at her from all angles. It was surrounding and it was exhausting. One time he even hacked into all of her social media accounts and changed her passwords so that she couldn't speak to anyone else. This is a 16 year old boy using really quite advanced and severe techniques to control and abuse his girlfriend.
Holly's stepdad called him up and demanded that he needs to change all these passwords back or he was going to come around to his house and speak with his mum. So Logan did. But this incident was the final straw for his relationship with Holly. In January 2023, she ended the relationship once and for all and blocked Logan McPhail on every social media that she had. Holly was free.

Chapter 3: What warning signs did Holly show before ending her relationship?
That was me paraphrasing, by the way. I'm not sure what words she used. I'm sure she probably said it in a much nicer way than I just did. Michaela and the rest of Holly's family had been nothing but kind and supportive. while setting this very fair boundary that they were no longer going to get involved.
They said that they really hope that everything works out and that Logan is okay, but they can't back down on this. And I do wanna be fair here. Logan's mum was clearly terrified for her son. He was vulnerable. He had gone missing and she was trying to get him somewhere safe.
But Michaela was also a mother protecting her own child and taking Logan in that night would have set a really dangerous message that if he turned up, if he caused panic, if he made everyone afraid enough, he could still get access to Holly. By now, all of Holly's family were awake and aware of this situation going on.
Even Holly herself knew that Logan was in Halt Whistle, maybe through her friends telling her. Because I know that she had him blocked on every social media, so she wasn't hearing directly from him, I don't believe.
Logan had even been sending voice notes to Holly's little brother, begging him to open his window and let him into the house, saying that he doesn't even have to see or speak to Holly, he just needed somewhere to go. Luckily, Holly's younger brother was sharp. Despite him being so, so young, he knew that it wasn't a good idea for him to get involved either.
So he refused Logan and told him to just get himself home. Everyone in the house had this really uneasy feeling, knowing that Logan was in the area, surrounding the house, wanting to come inside. So Michaela began checking the smart doorbell camera and all of the house surveillance to make sure that he wasn't trying anything out there.
It wasn't until 1am that the police were called in to resolve this situation. They eventually found Logan not far from Holly's house, they picked him up and they drove him back home. This was on a school night by the way, he was doing all of this in the middle of the night, the early hours of the morning.
It had been a truly overwhelming and unsettling night and everyone was just glad for it to be over. But little did they know, it was far from over. In just a few hours, Logan would make his way back to Holly, and no one would be able to get him away from her in time. The following day was Friday, January 27th, 2023. It was grey, cold, and a normal school day for Holly and her friends.
She tried to go about her day as normally as she could, following the rather stressful events of the night before, but she was texting all her friends about it the whole time, saying that Logan is basically stalking me. And he was. And what's even more disturbing is that Logan clearly hadn't learned his lesson after what had happened, he was still determined to hunt Holly down and speak to her.

Chapter 4: How did Holly's family react to Logan's stalking behavior?
Everyone's hopes came crashing down. They had to get her to a hospital as soon as possible. This girl needed emergency surgery. It was their only chance at saving her life. Meanwhile, Holly's family have no idea about anything that's just happened. They had had their concerns earlier on in the day but they believed that everything was going to be okay.
They believed that Holly was going to be home for 8pm to have this conversation with police. That was until Michaela received a phone call from her daughter's phone. But when she picked it up, it wasn't Holly on the other end. It was an older woman saying that she had her daughter's phone.
Presuming that Holly had just lost her phone or left it somewhere, Michaela thanked this woman saying that, well, Holly would be lost without her phone. But when Michaela offered to come and collect it, the woman said that she didn't have Holly's phone because it was lost. She had it because Holly had been stabbed. Michaela said she can't remember much of what happened next.
It was all just this big, emotional, frantic blur. She just remembers screaming at Lee to drive faster, to hurry up and get there. She said that her other children in the back of the car were hysterical, crying, all of them unaware of the full extent of what had just happened to Holly. And when they arrived at the scene, I think they pulled up quite close to the alleyway.
Lee got straight out of the car and rushed down right to where Holly was, where paramedics were treating his stepdaughter. He saw all that blood. And he said that that image will haunt him for the rest of his life. And he knew that Holly's mother, Michaela, would never recover from seeing her daughter like that. And so he rushed back to the car again and told Michaela not to go down there.
Whatever she does, do not go over there. Do not look. He didn't want her to have to go through seeing her baby like that. Holly Newton was rushed to the hospital, where they tried everything that they possibly could, but those injuries were just so brutal. They were so vicious. In the end, nothing could save her.
The pathologist who carried out Holly's post-mortem said that one of the stab wounds cut her jugular vein and another one had pierced her lung. She hardly stood a chance of survival. At just 15 years old, Holly Newton, was gone. That morning, she had said goodbye to her parents and gone to school pretty much as normal, only to be senselessly murdered hours later.
And for Michaela, all she wanted to do right now was hold her baby girl one last time, to kiss her and stroke her hair. But she was told that if she did, if she touched her daughter, she would be arrested. Because her baby girl was currently evidence in a criminal investigation. They understood, but the heartbreak was just never ending.
While Holly's body was taken to be tested and analysed, the boy who had rushed in to help her was also taken for emergency surgery and his injuries were successfully treated. Thankfully, he was okay. Now, before we continue on with this case, I do just want to take a moment to highlight the absolutely amazing work that Holly's parents have done in the wake of her death.
