OverDrive - April 30, 2026 - Hour 2 - Nazem Kadri/Brian Windhorst

30 Apr 2026

Transcription

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

7.405 - 34.252 Jeff O'Neill

Get back on the train, folks. Hour two. Brian Hayes, Jamie McLennan, Jeff O'Neill. Big. We are sprinting right now, by the way. We're not running anymore. Massive hour. We've got Naz on the horn. We've got Brian Rindhorst. Hazy. B-listing. B-listing. We're going to go B-listing and get Hazy's bar play. Top five bar play acts. Maybe Nas can have some input in that.

0

34.273 - 44.646 Bryan Hayes

Listen, Nas would know in Denver, right? I'm sure the Avalanche, they're not waiting for lines. I can't imagine they are in Denver. I don't know what the hot spot is in Denver. I'm not sure Nas does anymore either. He's not a young guy.

0

44.667 - 48.251 Jeff O'Neill

By the way, Nas is my partner in last year's Lincoln Cup.

0

48.311 - 68.761 Bryan Hayes

That's right. And you guys came back and stole it, didn't you? In extra innings. Man, it was dynamite. Yeah, it was phenomenal. Both of you put on a clinic last year. Here he is from the Colorado Avalanche and your partner. Nazem Kadri. How you doing, Nazem? Hey, good, guys. How are you? We're doing pretty well. You planning on watching this game tonight, Mini Dallas?

0

68.901 - 70.243 Bryan Hayes

What's your plan this evening?

71.726 - 82.182 Nazem Kadri

Yeah, no, absolutely. I'll be doing a little pre-scout myself. It's been a great series so far. It's been some exciting hockey in the playoffs this year.

82.783 - 99.694 Jeff O'Neill

Naz, when you were watching, I know you said pre-scout, but what... other than watching the game like a regular dude drinking a beer would, what would you be watching? Like, would you watch defenseman's tendencies or if you saw something or are you just watching the game to see what the hell's going on?

101.536 - 123.608 Nazem Kadri

Yeah, I mean, I think you try to have some takeaways and obviously, you know, put yourself in some situations out there where, you know, break down what plays you could make and what plays you shouldn't make. But, I mean, for me personally, I like to watch the PKs and you know, see what we can utilize on the power play. And, you know, obviously that's a big portion of the series is special teams.

124.348 - 132.199 Nazem Kadri

So those are always my favorite to watch is just like, you know, entries, in zone type scenarios that I feel like, you know, you'd get some good pointers from.

Chapter 2: What insights does Nazem Kadri share about the Colorado Avalanche's season?

199.001 - 203.665 Bryan Hayes

And B, how did you prepare to kind of walk back into a room that you were very familiar with?

0

205.518 - 227.658 Nazem Kadri

Yeah, I mean, certainly anxious moments. I think anxious is probably an understatement. I mean, when you hear multiple teams that are kind of in the mix and your head's kind of bouncing all over the place on where you could end up. But, you know, I'm thrilled that Colorado made a late push and was able to acquire me.

0

227.718 - 234.664 Nazem Kadri

Obviously, probably, you know, the top destination I had and with all the familiarity and the history we've had. So, yeah.

0

235.201 - 264.01 Nazem Kadri

um yeah man it was it was a whirlwind for for 24 hours there and and it was uh you know i'm just kind of still honestly still trying to figure out how i ended up back here but uh sure glad i am and and uh i mean walking in the dressing room easy so uh you know obviously a lot of guys know me i know them um you know coaching staff pretty much the same management the same so it was uh

0

264.293 - 267.638 Nazem Kadri

It was relatively simple for me. It was nice to be back.

268.539 - 291.212 Jeff O'Neill

Naz, just take us through, when that transaction goes down, for the people listening and watching, what are the real-life things that happen? You get on a bird with a bunch of suits, and your family stays back, and they've got to put the house up for sale, or does everyone get to Colorado and then deal with all that stuff after? Just take us inside of the details of what actually goes on.

292.88 - 318.263 Nazem Kadri

Yeah, there's tons. I mean, I think I'd be on the phone, you know, for a couple hours if I went through everything. But long story short, I mean, you get the call. You know, for me, it was a little bit bizarre because I'd gotten the call, I think, you know, in the afternoon on the trade deadline day, flew out the next morning, arrived that next night. And then I actually thought we had a

318.783 - 340.555 Nazem Kadri

um an evening game against minnesota was the first game i played in um but then i looked up the schedule and it was a noon game so no morning skate no practice fresh off the bird at like 8 9 p.m uh just with you know one luggage piece had to rush to the i actually had to drag the equipment guys into

340.838 - 366.154 Bryan Hayes

to get me all suited and booted with my gear uh night before so it was you know you're kind of thrown right into it but sometimes it's better that way you don't overthink it you just go out and play well the amazing thing is you reference you know same coaching staff which is so rare in the nhl where you know like i think marty st louis is like third or fourth in the league in tenure i think he's top five and it feels like marty got there like two weeks ago um it's just you've you've

Chapter 3: How does Kadri prepare for playoff games as a player?

375.164 - 391.562 Bryan Hayes

It's like him and John Cooper, and I guess Brindamore probably in Carolina, that just represent this stability and consistency. How much of a benefit is that to yourself, to the players, having a guy like Jared Bednar who's been there that long and obviously is very comfortable in running that bench?

0

393.444 - 395.787 Nazem Kadri

Yeah, Bednar's great. I mean, he's...

0

396.796 - 424.558 Nazem Kadri

certainly earned uh the right to to be there as long as he has and you know i think he does a great job getting the boys prepared and you know as a i mean newish player i guess coming to the team um you know you already know what to expect you already know what the coaching staff expectations are what they what they like what they don't like so you know it was easy for me to you know get a read on the room on the team and just kind of um you know fit in seamlessly

0

425.18 - 448.008 Unknown

So with you being, we'll call it the veteran guy now at 35 years old, you've been there, done it for every different facets. What can you tell us about the difference between maybe when you came into the league to where it is now with the younger players? You were a young guy that was up and coming and had a tremendous reputation, and now you're a veteran guy who's been a winner.

0

448.488 - 455.618 Unknown

Now you're around and have been around a lot of young players in the league. What's the difference between when you were young to where it is now?

457.862 - 488.179 Nazem Kadri

Well, I think all the younger kids or the new kids, they seem to be just all about hockey. It's literally all they do, all they want to do. For me as a young player, I knew I really liked the game of hockey. Of course, I loved it and I loved being out there and playing, but There's an off-ice component that you'd enjoy as well, but I think young kids now are just so dialed in.

489.542 - 513.026 Nazem Kadri

Even if you're out in the playoffs in a week or the season ends, it seems like they're back on the ice in a few days. just can't stay away from it, which I'll never understand. I mean, usually I like to let my gear collect a little bit of dust, you know, post-season. You're a joke horse. Before I strap it back on, you know what I mean?

513.227 - 525.481 Nazem Kadri

So, yeah, you know, it's good because they're just, you know, they're locked in and they, you know, they really enjoy the sport and just being at the rink and, you know, you kind of feed off it a little bit.

526.182 - 552.842 Jeff O'Neill

Nate, talk about or Nate, Nas, talk about Nate McKinnon. There's legendary stories that this guy, it's just maniacal about winning, where it's like no pop in the dressing room and the food and just his everyday routine. How crazy is the stuff that goes on with this guy as far as his desire to get better and his desire to win every night?

Chapter 4: What are the challenges of managing player rest during the playoffs?

634.821 - 653.06 Bryan Hayes

Red Tag Days are here. Check out the Toyota Crown Signia. Effortlessly tranquil, beautifully designed, and remarkably distinctive. Visit Maple Toyota right near Canada's Wonderland in the Maple Auto Mall. Okay. Thank you to Nazem. I like that. Old school. Maybe you just take a peek at what's going on out there. New school.

0

653.12 - 656.944 Bryan Hayes

Go home and shut it down and play video games and go to the rink in the morning.

0

657.481 - 657.983 Unknown

Crazy.

0

658.726 - 667.103 Jeff O'Neill

I told you my end of the year routine. God, it was joyous. My end of the year routine was about a month straight.

0

668.45 - 695.672 Jeff O'Neill

cancun for seven days back with my boys at home and then just yeah it was it was a month long yeah just was it a 10 pack would you put 10 pounds like what you know usually like guys put weight on at the end of the season other than seven or eight years i didn't even jump on a scale i was 191 for a long time later on not so much

696.192 - 701.176 Unknown

I know that some guys I played with could eat McDonald's every day and have 6% body fat.

701.197 - 708.403 Jeff O'Neill

That was Bates Battaglia. He could eat anything he wanted, and he would lose weight if he ate that. He's a freak of nature.

708.543 - 710.445 Unknown

Damon Lankow was the guy that I remember.

710.465 - 716.931 Jeff O'Neill

I remember him. That guy was my roommate at the under-18 tournament in Japan. He was a rake.

Chapter 5: What was Kadri's experience like during his trade back to Colorado?

757.205 - 758.187 Bryan Hayes

You guys want me to get to this?

0

758.347 - 758.568 Unknown

Yes.

0

758.588 - 778.859 Bryan Hayes

Monday and Thursday? Every Monday and Thursday. Now, you got me, because Darfladar is... It's an omission right now, but I'm thinking Darflad Dar is like one of these younger guys who doesn't want to go to the bar. He's at home watching game tape. So I'm going to say the bar play isn't necessary because I don't think he was out there, but you're probably right.

0

778.98 - 781.343 Unknown

Honorable mention. Let's give him an honorable mention.

0

781.363 - 801.014 Bryan Hayes

Darflad Dar was phenomenal, and last night in particular, he was incredible. He was great all season. Down the stretch, you're not a team built like that, and you don't get in unless you get really good goaltending. You just need it, and it's happened. Number five on the list. I've got Kaprizov at number five, currently leading the playoffs in points.

801.135 - 817.013 Bryan Hayes

This is a guy who's about to be the highest-paid player in the league. And there's always some nerves about that. And I scored an empty netter the other night, but still, it closed the game out. You had three points in the game. Drysaddle's there, too, with nine points. I wouldn't say quiet nine points, but just routine.

817.033 - 836.585 Bryan Hayes

Drysaddle, every single year in the playoffs, the guy's going to have a million points. But Kaprizov, not a ton of playoffs history. You know, not playing up the middle of the ice, not going to play 25 minutes a night, kill penalties and do all this kind of stuff. He's pulling his weight. He's been really good. He's been really dynamic. And nine points is nine points.

837.426 - 844.217 Bryan Hayes

So I got Kaprizov at number five. I have David Pasternak at four. He was not on the list last on Monday.

844.237 - 849.505 Jeff O'Neill

No, he wasn't. This is basically a one-trick pony to get on the B-listing.

Chapter 6: How does Kadri view the role of Jared Bednar as a coach?

1263.896 - 1272.612 Bryan Hayes

You're a very young guy, relatively speaking, and you're an incredibly important piece. They couldn't score in the fourth quarter without him. And I know he hasn't played great the first four games.

0

1272.592 - 1281.787 Jeff O'Neill

And I can't get the negative thought out of my head. It was just from being, like, pissy at the beginning of the series that he's like, I'm going to show you guys. I always get that thought in my head.

0

1281.927 - 1297.333 Bryan Hayes

And there he goes. Yeah, and walking down the hall and questionable for game six. Scottie said he's going to be okay, but he was banged up last night as well. And they just went cold in the fourth quarter. So, Windhorst on that and more still to come. So, this morning...

0

1298.022 - 1321.865 Bryan Hayes

O and I were off doing a shoot with a bunch of great people, and we've got a really exciting thing coming up next week that we're going to announce and we're going to get into very soon. And luckily for us and anyone that was working on the site, there was... It was catered, effectively, right? There were muffins and croissants and... Coffees. Coffees and fruit. And it was just phenomenal.

0

1321.885 - 1346.424 Bryan Hayes

It was an incredible vibe and everyone was in great spirits. And, which I think was a very nice touch, because this is unusual. I've been to a number of events that are catered. I don't recall seeing a little basket... With chocolate bars and little bags of chips and stuff like that. And within that basket, there were four Snickers bars. And I spotted them the second I walked in there.

1346.464 - 1362.623 Bryan Hayes

And I said, I haven't had a Snickers bar in a long time. I can't wait to have one later. It's 8 in the morning. I can't do it now. I'm not going to do it now. But surely, there will be Snickers bars here when I circle back at 10 a.m., 11, 11.30 a.m. I returned...

1362.721 - 1373.902 Bryan Hayes

Back to now, the crime, the scene of the crime and the Snickers had been swiped out alongside the Kit Kat bars, the couple of Mars bars, the bags of chips, the peanuts.

1374.182 - 1381.776 Unknown

There were a lot of things in there and they're all gone. Now, I was curious.

1381.756 - 1408.978 Bryan Hayes

who was the one that would possibly do that and you know when you watch like law and order you see these movies and then they they find access to videotape and they show the yes the figure walk into the room or or leave the scene of the crime roll the tape joe from the bridge this is

Chapter 7: What differences does Kadri see in younger players today compared to his early career?

1483.631 - 1501.861 Jeff O'Neill

I am so glad that they don't have me stuffing this. Because you know what I did? I left the table with all of that stuff. And then I took two steps, and I said, you know what? I'll grab one more Snickers, and I went back. Oh, no. If they got that on tape.

0

1502.102 - 1506.188 Bryan Hayes

I'm begging them to find that tape. I just don't know if there was a camera in that room.

0

1506.208 - 1510.175 Jeff O'Neill

Barry at Coketown Woods. By the way, Coketown Woods is a great golf course if you want to go tee it up there.

0

1510.415 - 1511.697 Bryan Hayes

Unbelievable place.

0

1511.837 - 1516.725 Jeff O'Neill

They always seem to have better weather than north kind of GTA. Go check out Coketown.

1516.705 - 1535.077 Bryan Hayes

Yeah, it's a really fun course. Really, really fun course. And it's in really good shape. So, Barry, if you can do us that favor. But that alone, I find that almost more funny. You walking out trying to pretend like nothing happened. And the little fake stop in chat as if you know you're being watched. Because people are like, this guy, you can't just run out with that kind of stuff.

1535.377 - 1552.179 Jeff O'Neill

But, dude, imagine Barry, his head must want to explode. Because I asked him. For the bag. Right. And he went into the kitchen and got me the brown. He must have thought, like, I'm putting a sweater or something. It was to rifle bags of chips for my wife.

1552.539 - 1552.679 Bryan Hayes

Unreal.

1552.699 - 1553.68 Jeff O'Neill

And, like, Snickers bars.
