Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This hour of Overdrive is powered by FanDuel. FanDuel, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score.
Alright, here we go. Overdrive off and running. TSN 1050 on the TSN app. Your home smart speaker up on TSN 4, up on YouTube Live. Later tonight, streaming on Crave. We're live at the RBC Canadian Open. Back up at TPC Toronto. Brian Hayes, YoDog, Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles, McLennan. And we're coming out with a bang here. Our main man, Mackenzie Hughes, around the table. What's up, Mack?
Not too much, boys. Just got done a day over at Greystone. Was it Greystone or Grey Sallow? Okay. Greystone. Greystone. There you go. I was just there. It really left a mark. Yeah. And, no, it was a good, nice day with RBC and some of their clients, and now here with you boys.
Awesome. Well, thank you for joining us. We're in the clubhouse here because we're on certain ā The Doogie Butler cabin. Doogie is running the whole operation.
Chapter 2: What is the significance of the RBC Canadian Open to Mackenzie Hughes?
Like, it's Brian Rollop and then Doogie. Doogie's our producer. Doogie has more access to the PGA Tour than anyone else not named Brian Rollop right now. Right. And it's phenomenal. But I have to get used ā we were at the Super Bowl this year, and it took me two shows to figure out how I'm supposed to ā
He's sitting in his chair. Well, it is awkward.
So we appreciate you coming in, and you're relaxed, and you can kind of set the tone for us. I love it. Yeah, it's great to see you, though. So how are we feeling? How are we feeling about being back up here, RBC Canadian Open? Yeah, feel good.
Obviously, coming off a nice result at Colonial, played well there, had a chance to win. So, like, you know, vibe is pretty high there. Been a bit of a slow start to the season for me, but ā Coming off a nice week and then coming home, that's a nice feeling. It's kind of like burning a hard par four and then going to a par five. You're just kind of like, all right, I'm feeling good.
Let's get some momentum going. So I feel like I'm hoping to kind of roll that into this week. Just playing in front of friends and family and all the Canadian fans, when you start to play well, it really can snowball and get you going. So I'm hoping for a bunch of that this week.
Second time around here with the course. What do you make of it and going through it?
Yeah, I mean, it's unchanged from last year. I mean, it's very much... I've been around it once now, and I don't see anything different from last year. And I think it plays almost the exact same. Rough is very similar. Greens are soft. So the fairways are actually running right now, but the greens still seem pretty receptive. So I think that...
If guys are hitting their driver well, I mean, the scores are going to be pretty good again. But, again, saying that, the score is, you know, 18-under with the playoff last year, so it wasn't like it was crazy. But, yeah, you put in the fairway you're trying to make, Brody.
I was just going to ask you that. It's not like a bomber's course. It's a shot-maker's course where you've got to stripe it, and the guy that putts the best is going to win.

Chapter 3: How does Mackenzie Hughes feel about his recent golf performance?
18 here. I think it's a pretty cool hole. And my understanding is they've kind of changed around the green a little bit. So, like, if you miss short, that water is officially in play. Like, last year there were a few times where kind of balls held up a little bit where now it's like if you're ā it's a risk-reward hole for sure. Yeah. But, you know, a closing hole on the PGA Tour ā
what kind of action are you looking for? Like, are the players, like, you know, you could hit your driver there, obviously. You can go for it in two. If you miss, maybe you lay up. Like, do you like that kind of variety that can come with the 18th hole?
Yeah, I think there's the option for, you know, a 3-6 swing. I mean, you're down, you could be down three-point in the last hole and make an eagle, and the guy you're playing with, you know, goes for the green and hits in the water or lays up and spins a wedge in the water. There's lots of, you know, volatility there. But... Yeah, I think, so I was playing around with it.
I played nine holes, and you could hit a ball on 18 that lands lower in the bank and gets caught by the intermediate rough. And if you land a ball one yard short of the front edge of the green, which is a better shot, it would roll in the water. Yeah, you're toast.
So it's like you could actually get away with like if you kind of whiffed, say, a 5-wood and it hit like middle of the hill, it might hang up. So I don't love that. To me, if the ball is going to go in the water from up top, it should go in from the bottom as well. Right. They should just shave it. If it's going to be like that, just shave it completely down. Open it up completely. Yep.
I don't like that it might save a ball that's not hit as well, potentially. The volatility of the hole is great. Like I said, in the playoff last year, it was obviously exciting. Guys were going for the green. I remember Cam Young hitting it way over the green. He had a chance to win. It's a good fun hole to finish on. Like I said, you get rewarded for hitting two great shots.
I noticed the Bills logo. Are you going to be taking us to a game this year?
Yes. What's going on there?
That's pretty cool.

Chapter 4: What insights does Mackenzie Hughes share about the TPC Toronto course?
How'd that happen? So, yeah, that's kind of a fun one for this week. Just for this week, but the NFL has certain rules, and so you cannot wear ā I can only wear this Bills logo within 100 miles of ā Really? That's a serious rule.
Why? So it meets the criteria here.
Yeah, I'm in the circle. Wow. So what, did you have a drone from Buffalo checking on you to see if you were within the right distance? You've got to stay in the boundary. You get outside the boundary, you're going to get tased. Yeah, that's a real rule. So I couldn't be in Charlotte playing the truest and wear this. Really?
Yeah, which I think is kind of a weird rule, but I understand it in some ways too. But yeah, for this week, I'm wearing the Bills logo. I love it. Repping the Bills Mafia. Okay. I'm a big Bills fan, so I'm pretty proud to wear this logo. Yeah, I would think so. Yeah, it's pretty fun.
The Ticats ever call you up and say, can we get something cooking there, too, or what?
You're from the greater Hamilton area. Yeah, I mean, right here.
Yeah, there you go.
Right there. On the heart, exactly.
We're right side of it. I love it. All right, well, we'll be rooting for you this week. We always do. I appreciate it. It's great to see you again, and I'm sure it's a busy time for you, right? You've got family, friends here and everything. Yeah. What's the plan between now and Thursday when you tee off?

Chapter 5: What strategies does Mackenzie Hughes suggest for playing the 18th hole?
It's close, as it should be. I think it's a pick-em game tonight. But you look at the NBA Finals where the Spurs found a way to win one last night. Wemby, though. Wemby, he showed up. He said, I've got to be a lot better. Right after game two, the story was Wemby. The turnovers, missed shots late where he had a chance to win the game, and he performed and he played really well.
Their young guys showed a lot of moxie last night at the Garden in a must-win game. Huge win, man. So now you've got Spurs down 2-1, Carolina down 2-1. Who's got a better chance of coming back and winning their series? It's interesting you ask that. I asked Mark Rowe the question when you were off the other day, who has the best chance of coming back and winning this.
Or I think I asked him, are one of these teams going to come back and win the whole series? And both you and Death Row said yes, one of the teams is going to do it.
I think Wemby could. Absolutely. Wemby might have found something last night, just maybe a little bit more. Not that he lacks in confidence, but he looked like he was feeling it last night.
Listen, they had game one, and to the credit of the Knicks, the Knicks stormed back and won that game. And the other night, the game was right there for the Spurs, and Wemby literally threw it away. Yeah. So they could easily be up 2-1 in that series, if not 3-0. I wouldn't say the same thing about Carolina.
That said, you know, they lost an overtime game, and they started really strong in game one, right? And it was Vegas that did actually come back. They were up 2-0 on those two-wheeler goals the first game, and it was quick. So, you know, I would lean the Spurs having a better chance just based on the nature of that sport. You know, I think Wemby has the capability of being an unstoppable player.
Brunson hasn't been, like, phenomenal. Yeah. He's been good, but he hasn't been phenomenal last night, like turnovers and missing some shots. But, you know, I think you can put some scratch on both dogs here and think that they got a chance to come back in these series.
They're going to dive back in.
Absolutely. Here he is, Brooks Koepka, joining us around the table. Come on in, Brooks. We're live at the RBC Canadian Open, TPC Toronto, and we're going to be up here all week. We just had Matt Hughes join us last hour, or I guess earlier this hour. Matt's been up here every year, but Brooks, you're back for the first time in seven years. Back up north, man. Good to see you.
