Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 24.781 Bryan Hayes

When life gets unpredictable, preparation matters. In medicine, it's all about staying alert, ready for whatever comes through the door. On the road, it's no different. That's why Volvo designs vehicles to help anticipate risk, reduce harm, and protect lives. The Volvo XC90's advanced safety systems inspire confident decisions wherever the road takes you. The Volvo XC90. For life.

Hour 2 Overdrive continues, powered by FanDuel, bringing you more ways to play your game your way. Best butts later in the hour. Marty Baran coming up. Man, he must be in a good mood. Yeah, the Sabres never lose. They never lose, and they're going back to the playoffs.

0

49.339 - 50.04 Jamie McLennan

Yep.

0

50.06 - 51.061 Jeff O'Neill

It's a lot of fun.

52.343 - 62.195 Jamie McLennan

Well, you know what? It's uncharted territory for that group. You know, it's been 14 years. The fans will be hanging from the rafters. Hang on a sec.

62.755 - 66.64 Unknown

Doogie, did you hear from the Sabres? Do they hate us, or are we going there, or what?

67.548 - 71.785 Jeff O'Neill

Doogie hasn't done anything. What do you think Doogie's going to do? Reach out to the Sabres?

71.845 - 75.6 Unknown

I thought we were going to do a show there, their first home playoff game.

Chapter 2: What recent changes have propelled the Sabres up the standings?

111.473 - 116.882 Jamie McLennan

So, I mean, I would hope. But then his buddies bring up that picture the other day that probably agitated him.

0

116.902 - 117.864 Jeff O'Neill

Yeah, I think he's agitated.

0

117.884 - 118.986 Jamie McLennan

Staring at my face.

0

118.966 - 125.842 Jeff O'Neill

All right, so we won't ask Rob Ray, but we'll ask Marty. Doogie's got no insight on Western New York. Doogie's not pulling any strings.

0

127.265 - 130.292 Unknown

He's our producer. He's the one that makes that call.

130.34 - 135.288 Jeff O'Neill

Okay. All right. We'll rely on Doogie. Doogie, you're up. Let us know what you got.

135.308 - 142.36 Jamie McLennan

I think we should go down there and we can have a show, if not at the rink, maybe close to it. P.F. Chang's there.

142.38 - 152.297 Jeff O'Neill

We're not going to Buffalo to go to P.F. Chang's, dude. I'll eat there. That's the anchor bar. Yeah, exactly. The anchor bar would be the wings. You've got to go to one of the main wing spots in Buffalo. Like, you have to.

152.412 - 163.129 Jamie McLennan

Yeah, I agree. But it would be a good road trip if we could have some fun with it. And why not? I mean, it would be interesting to see who they would play if they end up first in the Atlantic.

Chapter 3: How did the Maple Leafs fare against the Canadiens?

163.249 - 173.785 Jeff O'Neill

That's the amazing thing. Like, not only have they turned things around, they have a four-point buffer on the division. They're two points back of Carolina for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

0

173.805 - 191.683 Unknown

Dude, they're sick. Guys, I just have to clarify this because I just got a message from our Dave Jackson. Kevin Hastings is a referee supervisor, and he just made some clarity for me. He said, in the NHL, you can call five and stay in the game on an elbow, interference, or charging.

0

192.862 - 199.491 Jeff O'Neill

You're talking about the McKinnon thing. Nothing to do with Buffalo. You're talking McKinnon getting kicked out of the game last night.

0

199.651 - 207.241 Unknown

Nurse hits him, but there's also an injury on the play. You can have a five-minute interference charge, so that could have been applied there, I guess.

0

207.281 - 212.948 Jamie McLennan

That's kind of where I was going, and you make a good point. Honestly, I was shocked that it was five in a game.

213.349 - 219.797 Jeff O'Neill

I don't recall ever seeing a guy get kicked out like that for goaltender interference.

219.777 - 226.511 Jamie McLennan

Like Milan Lucic on Ryan Miller, did he get five? Probably, but that's different.

226.531 - 231.08 Jeff O'Neill

Two minutes back. But that was different, I'm saying. That's not this, Noodles. No, not at all.

231.12 - 241.06 Jamie McLennan

I'm trying to give you context to it. Like, that's not what it was. This was a guy driving hard to the blue paint. There's contact with Nurse, and he rolls over the goaltender.

Chapter 4: What makes a player one of the toughest in NHL history?

241.04 - 264.82 Jamie McLennan

My only thing from a defense standpoint is the goalies should be afforded his blue paint. That's his net. And McKinnon has to be responsible for that as hard as he's going. I was shocked that it was five in a game. I really was. And obviously it changed the trajectory of the game for Colorado because the best player or second best player in the world is not available to them. And...

0

264.8 - 267.727 Jamie McLennan

They had two power plays in the third period. That might have been a difference.

0

267.747 - 290.026 Jeff O'Neill

They killed the five minutes. Yeah, they did. I don't know. I mean, I can understand. Again, I haven't seen that before. I was surprised. But you do have to control... You're in control of yourself. There's no questioning nurse runs into him. But you hit a guy from behind, it doesn't matter if you meant to or not. If you bury a guy, you're in trouble. And protecting goaltenders is a priority.

0

290.207 - 310.981 Jamie McLennan

The other thing, too, is Connor Ingram had to leave the game. And it sounds like if he's in concussion protocol, that's one week. So they're going to call up Pickard, and it's Jari Pickard for the next couple games for Thursday, Friday, I think they play, or whatever it is. Yeah, they play Thursday, Dallas, Friday, and St. Louis. That's Calvin Pickard.

0

311.401 - 315.106 Jeff O'Neill

That was a big win for M2 last night, man. I thought they played really well. They played well.

Chapter 5: What are the TaylorMade picks for THE PLAYERS Championship?

315.207 - 316.268 Jeff O'Neill

I thought they played really well.

0

316.528 - 321.896 Unknown

Do you see that little spin around, little offside, same side one-timer shot from Jesus? So sick.

0

322.537 - 328.847 Jeff O'Neill

And it was dry sidled, too. What a play, Jesus. So sick. For him to spin on a dime like that.

0

328.887 - 332.675 Unknown

And then just rip that home like it was nothing.

0

332.896 - 351.449 Jamie McLennan

That's a hard shot. Totally. McDavid was pretty quiet in the night. He was trying to get going, but Colorado did a really good job. That was a really good game. We know what we expect out of Colorado. Edmonton, I wasn't sure. Especially, they gave up a goal, what, 30 seconds in? And you're going, oh, this is going to get ugly.

351.469 - 352.711 Jeff O'Neill

They needed a statement win.

352.811 - 356.776 Jamie McLennan

And they played well. I thought all their players played well.

356.796 - 371.655 Jeff O'Neill

I thought they did, yeah. I thought they looked good last night. They played with pace and structure. They didn't give up a lot. They didn't give up a ton last night. So, yeah, Edmonton with a big win. They needed that. They beat Vegas on Sunday, and now they're off to Dallas. This is a tough stretch, but...

371.635 - 391.077 Jamie McLennan

Yeah, and if they can get through this road trip, that's when their schedule gets a little bit easier for them. But at the end of the day, you also want to get your game going, and that's the one thing. Compete, playing defense, that hasn't been there consistently for that group. At least we've seen what they're capable of in the last couple games. We'll see if it takes or not.

Chapter 6: What are Bryan's FanDuel Best Bets for the upcoming games?

678.806 - 688.461 Martin Biron

They played over 11 minutes of five-on-five plus some special teams, so they were about 14, 15 minutes. That's a good third pair, a big third pair right now.

0

689.482 - 711.417 Unknown

Marty, let me ask you this, and it might be an easy answer because you might defer to the goaltender, but other than Tage Thompson... What is key for the Sabres? We know they're going to make the playoffs now. What is the key to success? Is it secondary scoring like a Josh Norris tuck? What is the key for them to be the real deal come playoff time?

0

713.017 - 735.064 Martin Biron

Well, the reason they are where they are right now is that there's not one answer to that, O-Dog, but you look at their depth on forward, right? So if you want to go Benson, Thompson, Tuck, and Norris with Doan and Oslin, then all of a sudden you got this line of Zucker, McLeod, and Quinn, and you look at them last night, Quinn has a hat trick, Zucker has another goal.

0

735.985 - 759.831 Martin Biron

They've been really, really good and steady. So it doesn't have to be Tate Thompson. Now, he had an 11-game point streak going, so that's awesome. And Alex Stuck's got a point streak going, and that's awesome, too. But you can kind of go in with your top nine, right, your top three lines, and at any given night, like, somebody can step up. And that's great. And on defense, the other thing is...

0

759.811 - 783.76 Martin Biron

Look, Rasmus Dahlin's a stud, and I don't know what Rasmus Dahlin says on the ice to get under the skin of so many opponents, but what Hagel did to him the other day, what Austin Matthews in the outdoor game in Hamilton, the cross check in the neck. Matthews is not a guy that gets rattled, and Dahlin got him rattled. I don't know what Dahlin does, but he gets people rattled.

783.74 - 805.03 Unknown

He really does. Marty, I might answer my own question. I think maybe one of the keys for the team to be real deal Holyfield, if Owen Power can kind of be invested and get angry and be ready as opposed to a guy that takes... two or three years of playoff hockey to get adjusted to that. You know what I mean?

805.271 - 823.277 Unknown

Like if he's all in and he's cross-checking guys and he's hitting guys and he's excited to be a part of the playoffs, and maybe it's a difference maker because there's always difference makers in any series and any playoff run. If he can be that guy right away and understand what's coming ahead, because if he's not, it might be the difference between winning or losing.

823.497 - 826.361 Unknown

I'm not putting it all on one guy, but he could be the ultimate difference maker.

826.381 - 845.306 Martin Biron

I don't know that he'll ever be... Yeah, I don't know that they'll ever be that guy, like Chris Pronger-type defenseman. But if you're going to get a puck in the corner and you just stiffen a shoulder into a guy and you come out of the corner with the puck and you make a play. Damn right. And he's done that this year. He's done that this year.

Chapter 7: How does the LA Marathon photo finish illustrate competitive spirit?

893.702 - 917.812 Jeff O'Neill

Well, we were talking about Rob Ray a few moments ago, and there's this Twitter account that plays all these old-school clips from the crazy days with Ray and Brad May and Barnaby. The clip was going viral recently where Gino Ogic ran Dominic Haschuk and that Barnaby just literally dropped his gloves and ran at Sean Burke, and there were tilts everywhere.

0

918.173 - 939.212 Jeff O'Neill

The reason I bring that up is we were talking about the McKinnon play last night on Ingram, and we haven't talked about the discussion of whether or not there's a responsibility for the Oilers to seek retribution. Gino Ogic and McKinnon are clearly not the same player, but the protection of goaltenders in the modern game

0

939.192 - 958.5 Jeff O'Neill

It's one of those topics that you don't talk about it every day until it pops up and you have to. I'm curious where you guys stand on it. Marty, you can jump in. Noodles, you jump in next. That was pretty vicious last night. McKinnon's not a nasty player, but where do you stand on the evergreen topic of protecting goalies?

0

959.56 - 978.582 Martin Biron

So, I mean, obviously I love the goalies and I want them protected. But when I watched that play live last night, I come back after the Sabres game, I turn on the TV, this game is on. I'm like, oh, this is exciting. You know, I'm going to watch it. I didn't even think it was a penalty. And now McKinnon walks that fine line and he's reckless at times with the way that how fast he goes.

0

978.562 - 1000.611 Martin Biron

I look at this. You want to give him a minor penalty for goal interference? Go ahead. But the reason why Ingram got hurt and the reason why the collision was so big is Darnell Nurse pushing just that little touch makes you look at the feet of McKinnon. They went 12 inches to the right. Now the center mass hits Ingram. I think there's a way you can protect the goalies.

1000.651 - 1021.814 Martin Biron

Number one, call goalie interference penalties. Don't just be like, no, we'll review it if it goes in or whatever. They seem to always take the approach of, unless it's a goal, we're not going to talk about it. So you want guys to not go in the crease willy-nilly like this? Call penalties. But last night, I'm sorry, but if Edmonton wants retribution, go to your defenseman.

1021.974 - 1027.62 Martin Biron

And it's a hard play for Norris. He's trying to stop McKinnon, but that happened right there.

1028.225 - 1048.933 Jamie McLennan

Yeah, he was going hard to the net. My whole thing is, yes, there's contact with nerves, but at some point the goalie has to be protected. I was fine with a two-minute penalty. I was shocked that it was five. I was watching it live, and I kind of went and grabbed a drink and came back, and I was like, oh, my God, he's getting the game. Now, how long was that review?

1048.913 - 1072.428 Jamie McLennan

That felt like a 10-minute review, Hayes. I don't know if you're watching it live. It was weird. But the injury, I think, factors in. And, oh, you said it, our boy Hastings, right? Is that who wrote... Yeah, Blades is his name. Hasteman. Yeah, Hasteman. Like, you know, I think the ref looked at the fact that Ingram was injured on the play. He was cut.

Chapter 8: What insights does Martin Biron provide on Jacob Fowler's performance?

1224.076 - 1237.513 Jamie McLennan

and that's where I think you have to be responsible for yourself and give yourself a little leeway to find a way to get out of the way because that's the goalie's ice. That's the only thing that I would say. That's not the goalie behind the net playing it in the player's area.

0

1237.913 - 1252.311 Jamie McLennan

He's in his blue paint, and he should be able to be afforded to make a save and not be run over by an opposing player, and that's where I think the gray area became last night between the two and a five and a game and all of that.

0

1252.291 - 1274.991 Jeff O'Neill

Well, let me stay in the paint. Let's shift to Montreal here, because I want to ask you guys about their situation. I was on TSN 690 today, and they're referencing 71 and 86, and they're like, it's Dryden into Waugh into Fowler now. Like, Fowler's up. He's playing tonight. Montembeau, I think he's in trouble. I think it's going to be Dobish and...

0

1274.971 - 1288.002 Jeff O'Neill

and Fowler, but Marty, where do you stand on that? Do you think there's a chance that Fowler's the man? Game one of the playoffs, do you think Fowler could be the starter for the Habs? And if so, do you think he stays there? How long would the rope be for a young kid like that?

0

1288.859 - 1307.07 Martin Biron

I think there's a chance Fowler could be that guy, and I think this may be unfair to Jakob Dobesch, whose record has been unbelievable. He's done everything you ask him to. There was a time this year they asked him, do you think you're going to get sent down to Laval? He's like, what are you guys talking about? Have you seen my record? All he does is win, but his stats aren't great.

1307.11 - 1308.252 Jeff O'Neill

His stats aren't great, but he wins.

1308.232 - 1327.305 Martin Biron

But his stats aren't great, and he's still like a little unorthodox sometimes. You're like, what are you doing in the crease, right? And Fowler is a stud. Fowler, but you saw him slow down a little bit. He came in like that out of hell, and then he slowed down a little bit. So I'm like, okay, I think they want to know. They gave Montembeau a couple of games post-Olympic break.

1327.645 - 1347.217 Martin Biron

They wanted to see where it was at. It hasn't been good. And it's just, unfortunately, the guy's confidence is completely, like, out the door. So, and you're in a tough spot if you're Montreal. Like, Ottawa's coming back. Like, they're seven points back of Montreal, but they're only, what, three points out, four points out of a playoff spot. Big game tonight.

1347.257 - 1347.898 Unknown

They're there.
