Transcription

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.166 - 20.793 Mike Johnson

We're bringing you more ways to play your game your way. Brian Hayes, the O-Dog, Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles, McLennan. We've got Confirm or Deny coming up later in the hour. And I made a mistake in the last hour. I made a mistake, and I want to address it right here, right now. You're going to carve me something.

0

20.813 - 33.43 Mike Johnson

I said last hour, after the O-Dog made the proclamation on this show, that he's retiring from Twitter. He's out. that it would take until the first ball is in the air at the PGA Championship for him to be back on.

0

33.75 - 34.932 Jamie McLennan

He retweeted something.

0

34.952 - 37.835 Mike Johnson

He retweeted something last hour. No, I didn't.

0

37.855 - 38.076 Jamie McLennan

Idiot.

38.096 - 47.788 Mike Johnson

Yes, you retweeted the tweet about you retiring. That counts as a tweet. So you can't retweet the retirement tweet and then claim you're retiring. What are we, 12 years old?

47.868 - 67.97 Jamie McLennan

You're out there tweeting. That's an announcement. I'm supporting the announcement that I'm done with it. I will no longer respond. I like to have fun. I like to attach Tom Brady and Sean Merriman to stupid pictures. And I like to have fun like that. But it's over. It's over. I don't have time for people.

68.831 - 71.613 Mike Johnson

Starting now. Just like Kramer.

71.994 - 81.743 Jamie McLennan

And the little jabs. It's like they just chew at you and chew at you. It's like, I don't agree. By the way, why are you fat again? It's just like...

Chapter 2: What insights does Mike Johnson provide on Auston Matthews' future with the Maple Leafs?

564.006 - 582.525 Mike Johnson

Instead of being proactive and maybe turning the page and going a different direction, trying to make it go as well as it did this year, which it probably won't next year, just the nature of the sport. But not a lot of loyalty out there. And I guess Kyle Dubas is at least publicly showing that he's going to have some of the big three in Pittsburgh.

0

582.792 - 601.83 Jamie McLennan

So, Johnny, just following that up quickly, with the cap going up, and it's a good chunk going up, do we have to reset maybe our standards on what a $5 million player is to maybe be 6 1⁄2 type of thing? And do we all have to do that across the board when we judge something?

0

603.886 - 621.143 Mike Johnson

Always. And I know we hate talking about percentage of the cap. We hate it. Because we don't want to do any math. And I get it. But whatever. If you were a 10% player three years ago. You're still a 10% player. Just 10% now is $10.4 million instead of $8. You have to adjust with the growth.

0

621.864 - 643.258 Mike Johnson

And the value as you allocate it around your team is going to be approximately the same as the teams that were successful doing it years ago. So everyone's got to get... I mean, it's going up 5% this year. It went up 4% last year. It's going to go up 5% the year following. So in the last three years, you're going to have to go up 15% or so. So a $5 million player, exact same player as 575 or 6.

0

643.539 - 663.813 Mike Johnson

That's how it's going to be. So when we fall out of our chair seeing Alex Tuck getting $10.89 million on the open market or Charlie Coyle getting six years as a 34-year-old who I don't think has ever had 60 points in his career. At $6 million, we're like, yeah, that's a function of the growing salary cap, and it's great news for the players.

663.833 - 671.781 Jamie McLennan

I think he's had 20 goals, like twice in his career. He's been around a long time, man, and he's just signed six years. That's crazy.

671.861 - 692.053 Mike Johnson

Good for him. Yeah, good for him, exactly. Well, you mentioned Tuck, who I can't imagine he hits the market, but he's gotten this far. Maybe he does. Maybe he leaves Buffalo. You know, everyone's trying to get a read on the mind of Austin Matthews right now and how he might be swayed to want to be a part of the program long term.

693.014 - 720.93 Mike Johnson

Do you think the drafting of Gavin McKenna would have more of an impact on his future or the signing of Alex Tuck in terms of if you're playing the role of Austin Matthews? Is there a third option? Is there not much impact at all? Trade for McDavid? What else are you going to get? No, but I don't know if either one Hayes really moves the needle in its own standalone.

721.551 - 739.598 Mike Johnson

Gavin McKenna won't be as good as Alex Tuck next year. Gavin McKenna will be much better than Alex Tuck in three years. So I don't know how that factors into Austin Matthews' calibration about what he wants to do. But I'm guessing Austin's view on the Leafs is, in its entirety...

Chapter 3: What role will Sidney Crosby play for Canada at the IIHF World Championship?

1010.395 - 1014.846 Mike Johnson

Try getting in the Bell Centre one time in your life, O. It's a great place. I've heard it's great.

0

1015.467 - 1034.736 Jamie McLennan

You know what? Following that up, though, you mentioned, like, puck movers, somebody like that. You've got to look at the whole package. It would be interesting to see what this Radish character is going to get. I mean, you know, he had an unbelievable season, but that's Kucherov putting it on a tee for him as well. Like, careful what you wish for sometimes.

0

1034.756 - 1055.565 Jamie McLennan

He's going to cash in, and rightfully so. He had an amazing season a couple years ago. I watched him in the AHL All-Star game. Like, he's a really good player, and he – Tampa found a good player to settle into the system, but what do you think a guy like that, Johnny? Is it buyer beware, or is this guy pushed through and going to be able to do that on any team type of thing?

0

1057.655 - 1078.883 Mike Johnson

I don't think so. I would be so nervous. I'd be so nervous about... He's got to do what he does well, which is always shoot the puck hard. He moves it okay. He's okay defensively. In the playoffs this year for Tampa, he was probably their best defenseman. I'm not saying something because they're a pretty good team. But Tampa's also a really good structure team.

0

1079.083 - 1088.901 Mike Johnson

I would be worried if you introduced him into Toronto, like this year's team, put him on Toronto's team this year, and you pay him $9 million a year, which is what he is going to get.

1089.242 - 1089.763 Unknown

Yeah.

1089.783 - 1113.503 Mike Johnson

You would be looking at him after six weeks going, what the hell is this? This guy, he's not going to fix all your mistakes. He will fit in with a good system and good players, and he will be a really good player himself. But he's not good enough to walk in there and say, I'm the number one, everyone get behind me, and I'm going to play 27 a night, and I'm going to be Zach Wierenski in Columbus.

1114.004 - 1131.507 Mike Johnson

I am so far away. I'm Quinn Hughes, and I'm on the ice. It's all good. I would be worried about that. And what that does to him mentally, like does he try to... He suffers from one of those free agent contracts where he tries to live up to it by changing. And it goes really terribly. I want him to get paid. He's not got a lot of money in his career.

1131.527 - 1148.81 Mike Johnson

He deserves the $70 million he's going to get this summer. I'm happy for him. But it's got to be a good spot. Because if he goes to a bad team, and Toronto was a bad team, I don't know if he alone in his game... will sort of survive and thrive in a bad environment and a non-structured environment.

Chapter 4: What are the implications of salary cap changes in the NHL?

1847.744 - 1852.61 Jamie McLennan

Their penalty kill, what do you even talk to Rod about his penalty kill? The penalty kill was ridiculous. Unbelievable.

0

1852.63 - 1854.973 Mike Johnson

Slavin was right front and center for all that.

0

1855.413 - 1855.633 Jamie McLennan

Yeah.

0

1855.874 - 1878.945 Mike Johnson

Well, I mean, listen, we're now suggesting that Minnesota has no chance to win game six or game five, I guess. That's what we're basically saying. I kind of feel the same way. Like after last night, I thought Minnesota would win that game. I did. I thought they'd show up ready to play. The place was going nuts to start the game. And Colorado is just – they're so good. They're on top of you.

0

1879.547 - 1887.307 Mike Johnson

They're bigger. They're faster. They're stronger. You know, Manson, I don't know if that was – I didn't think that was really a butt end on McCarron.

1887.628 - 1908.04 Jamie McLennan

I thought it was – I know McCarron's like an old school guy. I think – I didn't see like a – I know it was – he kind of tried to punch him in the butt end. There's an angle, though, the guys. There's an angle. I thought it was a cagey move, but I thought they – I mean, they clipped him, and I thought it was a butt end, but he knew what he was doing.

1908.06 - 1929.285 Jamie McLennan

Watch, he gets a little – watch, he gives him – I'm not denying the grease factor in there. Watch the move there. There's an angle there. He knew what he was doing. I know, but as greasy as it was, and I think sometimes you can't pick this apart about getting leverage. There was only so much. I don't know.

1929.465 - 1940.861 Jamie McLennan

I thought it was a greasy little play, but I didn't think that there was much more than that there. I thought they got the call right. It was a double minor. Did he get clipped? I thought he got fined today or something like that.

1941.062 - 1943.085 Mike Johnson

The gratuitous fine to put you on the books.

Chapter 5: How is Gavin McKenna expected to impact the Maple Leafs?

2145.445 - 2160.549 Mike Johnson

Redick knows him, family, friends. So you think he's a bonafide NBA player? I think he's got a chance to be a depth player in the league. He's not going to be a star, but could he be a guy off the bench, an eighth, ninth guy in a rotation? I think he's got a chance to do that. I think he legitimately does.

0

2160.789 - 2167.8 Jamie McLennan

The average nine minutes a game last year, like 42 games, three points, field goal percentage is 41%.

0

2168 - 2172.066 Mike Johnson

He's a young, depth guy in the league. I'm not guaranteeing he has a 10-year career.

0

2172.046 - 2175.392 Jamie McLennan

I'm going to go watch him play if he ends up in Poland, man.

0

2175.412 - 2186.452 Mike Johnson

Well, Luka's taking a lot of heat, man. Because Luka was hurt, and he came out after and said, I wasn't that close. But a lot of people are like, dude, if you're even 50%, you've got to get out there and play.

2186.673 - 2190.727 Jamie McLennan

There's just nothing worse than the guy that's like... Can you try it?

2190.968 - 2193.292 Mike Johnson

Yeah, can you give us a shot? We're in the second round here.

2193.332 - 2201.124 Jamie McLennan

We could really use you. You can't even try it. It just bothered me, the guy that said, yeah, it's not happening.

2201.184 - 2211.722 Mike Johnson

It's like, well, how the hell do you know? Don't bother asking. Check, please. All right, got a couple quick ones here. Confirm or deny, Gavin McKenna is the face of the Maple Leafs within the next three years.
