Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
This hour of Overdrive is powered by FanDuel. FanDuel, bringing you everything from the opening line to the final score. Alright, here we go. Overdrive off and running. TSN 1050 on the TSN app. Your home smart speaker up on TSN 4, up on YouTube Live. Brian Hayes, the O-Dog, Jeff O'Neill, Jamie Noodles, McLennan. What's going on today? How are we feeling this afternoon?
Hayes, I have a question for you out of the gate. I know you say that you're a diehard Green Bay Packers fan and that growing up, you and Billy Bob, your dad, were diehard Leafs fans. It's now into the conference finals. I personally have a lot of balls in the air. I got my old team, the Canes. I've got a Canadian team. Love Canada. Love the Habs right now. I want to see them do well.
I also want to see Mitch Marner do well. What kind of lean do you have? Or are you like, I'm leaf guy, and everyone else can screw themselves because I don't care? Because I think there's a good feeling about the Habs around Canada. I think a lot of people are jumping on board. But I know there's people like you that say, I hope the Habs lose. No, I don't have that viewpoint.
I'm not openly rooting for or against anybody. You just don't. You like enjoying the games and whatever happens.
Chapter 2: What are the highlights of the Avalanche vs. Golden Knights series?
Well, I'll be honest. Professionally, I look through the lens of this show. Basically, everything in sports, I look through the lens of what is going to make our show better. That's the truth. Okay, so what scenario, if you give me a top three scenario list for this show, is it Habs doing well? Habs Vegas Cup Final is number one on the list. And it's not even close. It's not even close.
You put Mitch Marner in the Cup Final back in a Canadian city playing at the Bell Center. You know, chasing a con smite, let's be clear here. If Vegas finds a way to beat Colorado, I've got to believe Mitch Marner is going to have a great series. We would have to do Boston Pizza overdrive from Montreal. I think we probably have to. I mean, it's a layup. That's a layup. I think you're right.
That just seems like a formality. For the first two home games of this year. I'd say I guess we'd have to. I don't want to, but I'd say maybe we have to. I just want to add in here quickly. Wasn't it a week ago it was his Buffalo Sabres? Oh, yeah. That was lost. That's all gone, right? Yeah. Oh, Lake Erie Zone or whatever it is. Wherever it goes. I never once said my Buffalo Sabres.
Oh, you love the Buffalo Sabres. I told a story when I was a kid. My grandpappy couldn't afford tickets, and he drove us to Montreal to see Habs games. So, therefore, we took a liking to the team. Just a quick five-hour drive to save money on gas because you couldn't get to the gardens.
Well, listen, honestly, I'm not really rooting for or against anybody, but I had someone bring this to my attention recently. that they looked at the Habs as a team that is generally liked by everybody. And I had never really thought of that because growing up in Toronto, obviously the Leafs and the Habs, there was always such a big rivalry. There always has been and there always will be.
But I get the Leafs, it's black or white. I was just going to ask you, why is it if the Leafs were in the conference final, which seems like...
craziness to even say that why would everyone why would there just be hatred and in in hit pieces and garbage i don't know what if there's a hatred there where it's like everyone would say that that team makes me sick yeah like there was an article way back in the day like about just they were the most hate with tux and course and all those guys it was like the most hated team in pro sports.

Chapter 3: How does Cale Makar's injury impact the Avalanche's chances?
I'm like, why are we saying the Montreal Canadiens are so likable, which I totally agree with, and yet the other organization is just hated? It's not difficult to figure out. Toronto... Noodles, you're from the West. Do people hate Montrealers in Edmonton? I don't know. Maybe they do. You know what it is.
It's just, yeah, I mean, I guess growing up, my friends were either Boston fans or Habs fans. Tell us why you hate us, Jamie. I don't hate anybody, but I will say that group that you pointed out, they were unlikable. Tucks and all them, they were cocky. That's why. I was in the league at the time. I was in the league at the time. How many Memorial Cups have you won?
What does that have to do with anything? Yeah, but listen, you played in the league. I can't speak to that. Playing in the league against them, they were unlikable. That's what they were, an unlikable group. Well, because they were tough, too. They fought. They beat up people. I understand. They were a tough team. From the outside, I'm joking there, but from the outside, it's...
I don't know if one organization is more unlikable or not. I think people are just so passionate about their team, regardless of where they're from, and then there's a team that they'll either call a cheat team or whatever, and there's a team that they will always dislike no matter what. And if that's Toronto, if that's Montreal, if it's Boston.
Chapter 4: What are the latest developments in Aaron Rodgers' final season announcement?
You name it. It's an original six team because they've been around forever. So I know guys who I have friends who have a Leaf tattooed on their chest. They're Leaf fans for life, no matter what. And they will hate the Habs no matter if they're the most likable team right now. But that's because they're a Leaf fan, not because they're an Oiler fan. I don't think this is even debatable.
The Leafs are the sole team in the country that everyone has an opinion on. The reality is, I don't know if people in Winnipeg and Ottawa are thinking of each other at times. I don't know if Jets fans have a feeling for the Senators and vice versa. That is actually, you can't even argue that. No, it's not that they don't respect them or whatever, or, hey, you're Canadian, great.
I don't think people in Winnipeg and people in Ottawa are like, man, I just can't live with them having success. Or, wow, I'm so happy they've had failure. where the Leafs, you know, it's a Toronto thing. It's the city. It's the media here. You know, there's a lot of different things. The attention that they get, all of that type of stuff. 100%. They're on hockey night.
They go to Vancouver, and they play at 4 p.m. local. You know, there's a lot that goes into it, and I understand it, and I get it. But the Habs, I don't know. I was kind of ā I hadn't looked at it that way, but I get the impression it's easier for Montreal Canadian fans to jump on their bandwagon. I think you're right. No one was going to jump on the Leafs bandwagon.
They would watch, happily watch, because it's compelling. A lot of people hate watch, just like you hate watch the Cowboys or hate watch the Yankees. There's a lot that goes into that. It's just you pick a side. There's no real middle ground where I think Montreal... This year being... Listen, they play a fun brand of hockey. They've got a lot of talent. They're the clear underdog right now.
Colorado, Vegas, and Carolina are more established teams in terms of their record and in terms of their recent history. But I'd also say... Montreal has had the most difficult path of the four, and I think by a substantial margin. I get Minnesota was great in the second round. That's a really tough matchup. Colorado and L.A. in the first round. Worst team in the playoffs by a mile.
Vegas had Anaheim and Utah. Carolina, I thought Ottawa would be better. They weren't. They ran out of gas. And Philly was lucky. They were happy to make the playoffs. Ecstatic they beat Pitt. Montreal's gone through Tampa and Buffalo. They are way more battle-tested than any of the other three teams in the playoffs right now.
And I think they've earned the ability to say, hey, we fought tooth and nail to get here, where the other teams wasn't as challenging. Yeah, that's fair. The thing is, too, you look at the group. they don't seem to have big egos. Like Nick Suzuki is a real likable guy, great, affable. Unassuming guy. Unassuming, just a great leader, right?
There are maybe larger-than-life players that maybe carry that mantra. I'll give you an example. Matthew Kachuk, people love him or hate him, right? He could play the villain, and that's on a team. Either love the Florida Panthers or hate them, the style that they play. Look at that Montreal team. Caulfield, smile on his face. Hudson looks like a 12-year-old boy out there, just dominating.

Chapter 5: What insights are shared during the Role Play Level of Concern segment?
And Bednar's playing the role like, oh, he'll be back. Really? I don't know. I mean, we'll see. And what does that mean? He'll be back game seven or game two? Well, he could come back. But what happens when somebody drills him through the boards? Because that will be mission statement number one on the chalkboard.
Every time that guy touches the puck, we don't know what's wrong with him, and we're not going to assume. You put him through the boards if you can. Tough to hit a guy like that.
But for some weird reason, guys, if I could take it back to when I was playing, if the coach came in in the morning and said, guys, there's going to be no Nick Lidstrom playing tonight for Detroit, you're like, that's a big deal. Big deal. Because that guy's on the ice for 30 minutes, and it's plus and negative.
The negative is he takes away all the scoring opportunities when you're on the ice, controls the whole game. And the positive, he's creating so much on the offense. So it's a massive figure and a massive contribution out of the opposition lineup. So if you're Vegas, I don't want to say it gives you an extra energy, but it's like, man... No Kale McCarr, one of the best players in the world.
You've got to take advantage of that guy not being there. Cycle games, pucks in all the time, work their D, because that's a massive loss on the blue line. It's not Joe Blow kind of. three or four D-man kind of missing a game. The most irreplaceable player maybe in the league. Maybe so, Brian. Maybe so. That's the one thing that you can't factor in.
That's why you have to play the games because you have no idea of what the health of the team is on the other side. Carolina's at 12 days off. You're assuming that that team's healthy. We have no idea who's at 100% for the Habs because they just went through 14 games and, you know, different types of wars. Vegas, you know, Mark Stone banged up.
You look at it like that's half of the battle to go deep into the playoffs is health. And that can change the trajectory of a series. Very quickly. Ask the Edmonton Oilers. McDavid, that was a nothing play. All of a sudden, whatever he had, cracked ankle or whatever the hell that was, that changed the trajectory of that series, period. McCarr, who knows?
If he comes back game two and if he's at 100%, that looked like something like shoulder or he went off in a weird... I don't know if you saw that, O2 or Hayes. That hit, he was... It seems shoulder-related. Don't quote me on that. They haven't played in a while either, right? They've had a lot of time, and he's still not playing tonight. Exactly. That's very significant. Concerning, yeah.
Yeah, it might be the equalizer for the series. It really might make this a coin flip. I'd still lean Colorado. If McCarr was healthy at 100%, I would lean them significantly. But you're right. You know, take him out of the lineup changes a lot of things. If he does end up playing, you know they're going to be all over him.

Chapter 6: How are the Canadiens preparing for the Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final?
Like last night was particularly cruel again in the ninth. Like they had a rally going. You know, they score another run, and they were down two going into the night. They score a run. They've got bases not full, but they've got runners on, and they just can't get a big hit. And you've got Springer coming up. You've got Guerrero coming up.
Okamoto's been up a couple times with runners on recently, and now he's cooling off. They just can't find a mojo. You know, now you look at it, the Rays, they're like 11 1ā2 back of the Rays and 8 1ā2 or something back of the Yankees. And, yes, there's a lot of time left. The luxury they have is the rest of the American League has been horrendous.
They're like two games out of the third wild card spot. So you're actually still in the race. But the bullpen's depleted, and they don't have a day off for a long time. It's tough. And you've got Cam Schlittler on the mound tonight. This kid's been unbelievable for the Yankees. So if your bats are cold and you're seeing that guy on the mound ā It's not great. You know, it's not great.
All right, we've got role-play level of concern coming up where John Schneider, I believe, will be played by one of us. Brad Trulivin coming up from Switzerland, the co-GM of Team Canada. So we'll get into how the team's looking over there. What's up with the captaincy, Sid Celebrini? What is he learning about Sid? And we'll ask about, you know, what happened this year?
What happened with the Leafs? What does he look back on and tries to put his finger on why it went wrong? So Brad's coming up just after 5, and Jeff Gorton coming up with the Montreal Canadiens down in Carolina. He'll join us at a game one tomorrow night. So we've got a big one this afternoon. Big one cooking this afternoon. Big ball game in New York.
The Knicks coming back from down 22 last night. That was crazy. Brunson is such a New York Knick. If there was an all-sports bar play, Brunson. Jalen Brunson. Pass Jeter, pass Judge, pass LeBron in L.A., just go to the top. That was ridiculous. That game was over. Over. 22-point deficit in the fourth, and he just went at James Harden and absolutely dummied him. The beard, not enough.
Yeah, it goes to overtime. The second it got there, you knew it was coming. There was no way the Knicks were losing then. That's a crushing defeat for Cleveland. And a big one for New York. They're kind of like the Habs. Yes, it's New York and New Yorkers and Knicks fans, but they're like these lovable losers for the last 50 years that I think they're going to get to an NBA final.
And if they do... Look out, man. That'll be electric down at the Garden. Absolutely electric. So that and more still to come. Overdrive continues. TSN 1050 and up on TSN 5.
I'm Cynthia Loyce.

Chapter 7: What are the stakes for the Canadiens in their playoff run?
And I'm Josie Dye. And we're done pretending we have it all figured out. Each week we laugh, cry, and talk our way through life's messiest moments. The things you think about but would never say out loud. The questions you are always too shy to ask. Relationships, regrets, awkward moments, and the stuff no one warns you about. It's honest, it's funny, and sometimes it gets a little uncomfortable.
But that's kind of the point. This is Cynthia and Josie's Unmentionables. Listen on the free iHeartRadio app or wherever you get your podcasts.
All right, Overdrive continues, powered by FanDuel, bringing you more ways to play your game your way. Jeff Gorton coming up in about ten minutes. The Habs have landed in Carolina. Game one tomorrow night. Hurricanes, Habs. Game one tonight in Colorado. Avalanche taking on Vegas. No Cale McCarr for the Avalanche tonight. Game three of the series down at Yankee Stadium. Game two in Oklahoma City.
You just got great stuff going on every single night now. Like, you're playing for keeps. Aaron Rodgers, right, back in minicamp down in Pitt and said, this is it. Done. Back for one last ride with my main man, Mike McCarthy, who he did win a Super Bowl with. But then that's it. Are you buying that?
I wonder what the fan base thinks about that, man, where it's like, if this guy was still on top of his game, people would be like, all right, let's get this one. But I don't think they're thinking that down there. I already think the Steelers fans know the trajectory of what this season is going to be all about. It basically played out last year. They could get in. They're going to fizzle.
I don't know. I don't know what the excitement level would be if you're a Steelers fan. I really don't. Yeah, I'm with you. I mean, listen, Mike McCarthy was a surprise hire for me. He's been around the league for a while. Yes, Super Bowl winner, and then down in Dallas. This guy has coached Green Bay-Dallas-Pitt. That is like a trifecta of giant public teams in terms of fans and traveling well.
This guy has not exactly been coaching down in Carolina or Tampa or something like that. He is used to big markets. He's a Pittsburgh guy. But I agree with you. Like Rodgers, last year I thought he was fine. You know, I thought he was okay. But it's a tough division. I think Baltimore's got a chance with a new coach to be better. I think on paper the Bengals have improved.
If Joe Burrow can stay healthy, they can be a competitive team. So, you know, the Browns, who the hell knows. But I'm with you. He's obviously not who he once was. Even four or five years ago, the guy went back to that game. And I've never liked ā I've never liked the announcement beforehand. Like maybe if you're Gretz or Mario or, I don't know, Peyton Manning.
I mean, this guy is on the same level. I just don't like it. This is going to be my last. Because as his teammate, you're like, yeah, as your teammate, you're like. How much does this guy really care what's going on this year? Or is all about getting the gifts from the opposition? It turns into a circus, man. And they deserve it. They're one of the greats. But it's just a weird vibe.

Chapter 8: What challenges do the Hurricanes face after a long layoff?
Do you remember the stops that Mariano Rivera was making in his last season? It was a full stop and chat with the Jays and their staff and stuff. and presenting gifts. It was crazy, man. It was a circus. Yeah, it was. Yeah, and baseball is different because you go everywhere. You're in every single park now, and you're there for days. You're right.
I've heard the stories of Rivera actually meeting and greeting with all of the staff because he was at the Rogers Center his whole career, played in the American League East his whole career. It was Toronto Fenway. Camden Yards, the Trop, he was there more than any other stadium in the league. And baseball is different than football. Rodgers is going to have eight or nine road games this year.
But I'm also not convinced he's actually 100% going to retire. No? Well, he's kind of the Brett. He's Brett Favre. Favre pulled it on him when Rodgers got drafted to Green Bay. And... I'm just saying, I think it's probably 90% certain this is it and he's done. But what if he has a good year? Is anyone going to hold him to it? No.
Like no one's going to say, sorry, you said you're not playing anymore, so you're not going to play. Pittsburgh's desperate, clearly. That's why they brought him in a year ago. That's why they brought him back this year. I think when he says this is it, it's it. Like I don't. Really? I don't know. Like, didn't Brady do the same thing? That's it. I'm done. Here's me on a beach.
And then all of a sudden, no, I'm just kidding. I'm not actually done. There was a lot of things going on with the karate instructor. Stuff was happening. He was in a bad place. Yes, he was. He needed a distraction. Put it that way. There was kung fu fighting happening. Sorry. Taekwondo. Taekwondo. You watch yourself on those damn Taekwondo trainers. Very different martial art. Very different.
Really different. Very different. That's Seagal type of thing, isn't he? Is he jiu-jitsu? My son takes jiu-jitsu. This guy was a combo of taekwondo and yoga. Oh. Yes, he was. Stretching out. That should have been sign number one. You could be in trouble. Tight hammy stretches. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, we talked about Seagal a couple weeks ago. I honestly don't know noodles.
Like, I don't know what, you know, everyone says, hey, I got a black belt. What his discipline was? You don't know what his discipline was? Yes. Like, if I told you, hey, I got a black belt, how would anybody know? Is it registered? I got a black belt, though. Yeah, you got documentation of it?
Remember we had Gretzky on years ago, and I asked him, there's a saying, you're the Wayne Gretzky of what? My wife is the Wayne Gretzky of shopping or whatever. If you were a black belt, what would you be a black belt of?
black belt of golf no it definitely wouldn't be that napping you know napping it would i could possibly be a world champion that that's definitely possible i'm only a black belt at the getting up at 4 a.m because i'm early rise i'm not i am black belt 4 a.m guy You're like a farmer, and yet you don't do anything. You get up at 4 and do nothing. It's remarkable.
