What motivated you to build a home/garage gym for marathon training?
How's it going, everybody? My name is Brady Holmer. I'm an exercise scientist, researcher, science communicator, marathon runner. And today I'm gonna be giving you a tour of my home gym, garage gym, is what I like to call it, or the pain cave, as some people like to refer to theirs. I'm also gonna be doing a review of some awesome gym equipment that I received from Fed Fitness. Today we're gonna be looking at the treadmill. Elliptical, a set of adjustable dumbbells, my personal favorite because they allow me to get in some upper body work as a distance runner, which is something I generally lack. And we are also going to be giving a little bit of a review of the Zwift bike. So I've been testing this equipment for a while.
I'm super stoked to share it with all of you today. And generally, I'm just gonna talk to you about the gym, why I created a home gym in the first place and how I use it for you know both marathon training and just to support kind of my health and longevity and uh performance. So today that's what we're gonna be doing, reviewing the equipment, showing you my home gym, and I think you will find it interesting. Alright everybody, so welcome to my gym. Welcome to my garage gym. Um as you can see, I have a variety of equipment in here and I'm pretty much using this gym every single day for at least one thing. You know, primarily what I'm doing is running every single day. Um but when I'm not running, I'm biking.
So what I'm gonna do right now is show you all of my equipment, which I've pretty much set up to, you know, either allow me to cross train, allow me to strength train, do you know kind of anything I want to you know in addition to the running every single day. So I have a rowing machine right here.
How do the FEIERDUN DB1 adjustable dumbbells improve upper‑body strength for runners?
As you can see, it's not really set up right now, but the Concept 2 rower, I actually use that almost every day before a run to warm up. I do like 90 to 90 seconds to 120 seconds, three minutes to warm up. Gets me a good little upper body, lower body workout before the run even starts. I have a set of adjustable dumbbells here. Again, these are from Fed Fitness, really impressed with these. I can do push-ups, curls, Anything really I want with these and the adjustable dumbbells have been kind of a game changer for my upper body strength training routine since before I was really limited by the dumbbells that I had. But adjustable dumbbells, we have the elliptical here, perfect for cross-training days if I want a low impact workout.
Treadmill, I'm using this almost every day that I run, doing some uphill strides, maybe interval work on the treadmill, super controlled environment. And then we have the Zwift bike. Wift smart frame. I'm on this thing nearly every day. I have it hooked up to the TV, which really enhances the experience. So Really fully functional in this gym. The only thing I'm missing is a sauna, so hoping to get one of those one day, but um I'm in this gym every day doing something and it gets hot in the Texas summer so I can also use it for heat training. Double uh bonus of the gym being in the garage, but lots of equipment, lots of fun in here, lots of pain in the pain cave. Alright, so the first piece of equipment that I'm gonna be talking about and reviewing today are the Fair Dune DB1 dumbbells.
These are a set of adjustable dumbbells. I have two of them. Again, these are from Fed Fitness.
Why is the YOSUDA EM1 magnetic elliptical a key low‑impact cardio tool?
This is probably my favorite piece of equipment. You might think it's the treadmill being a runner, but the adjustable dumbbells have literally been kind of a game changer, my hero for upper body training because they're literally all in one. They allow me to do everything. So I can do presses with these. I can do curls with these. I can do push-ups with these. So I have been using these things almost every day, whether it's a strict upper body strength workout or just kind of coming out here to do a few curls during the day. So these go up to 52 and a half pounds each. So total of you know 105 pounds, two and a half pound increments, and as you can see here, adjusting super smooth two and a half pound increments.
