America, the greatest country in the world. Welcome to our special Politics by Faith. Did the Old Testament really happen? It was an honor to be on Bill O'Reilly's show the other day. Bill, a legend of course. He's also tough. He's tough. He's probing. There's no bloviating with Bill. You've got to get to your point. And that's what's great about Bill from a listener's perspective. It's very tough if you're the person being interviewed. Because you can make your point, but if you don't make it quick enough, you've got to hurry. But he'll keep going. So you'll make your point, and then he'll be like, well, what do you mean exactly? Give me an example. It's like you're defending your dissertation up there, right?
You have to be 10x prepared. So on the show the other day, Bill was kind enough to ask me about my podcast. So I explained what the Politics by Faith podcast is. We take the news. We relate it to stories in the Bible and Scripture. The objective is to relieve anxiety. We shouldn't be anxious when we read the politics of the world because there's nothing new under the sun. And he goes, give an example. So I do. And then he says this.
You're not taking the Old Testament literally, are you? I am indeed.
Now, I managed in the moment to say I do indeed. he followed up he said yeah on that he followed up with that boy said do you really believe it you're you're telling me you believe all of it now before we play that clip here how would you respond to that how would you respond if someone came to you and said by the way i also work for bill o'reilly so he's also my employer so so like legend in the industry and employer says oh you don't really believe the old testament stuff like the frogs and the parting of the red sea like you don't believe that do you what would you say in response to that here's the best i could do in the moment so you believe that everything in the old testament happened I do.
The frogs, the plagues in Egypt, the frogs came down. They chased them around. The Red Sea parted. They went through the Red Sea. You, Mike Slater, you'll believe in that.
Mr. O'Reilly, at the risk of losing my opening, starting three minutes of your O'Reilly update, I believe every word of the Bible is true as it is written literally.
Okay, and believe me, your belief should be respected. Anybody running it down or anybody denying it is anti-democratic and foolish, in my opinion.
After the interview, I asked a bunch of my friends and people I admire how you would have answered that question. The question, like, do you believe the Old Testament is true? You actually believe it? And my friends and family gave such great answers. I wish I could have come up with in the moment, but I felt it was important just to be adamant. Yes, I do. Now, Bill asks thoughtful questions. You say it's true. Why? How do you know? Great questions. So let's do it. Today's special is about how we know that the Old Testament is true. I got three overarching first points to make, and then we got incredible guests. First, I know the Old Testament is true because the New Testament says it is. 2 Timothy 3.15 says, so this is Paul, he's encouraging Timothy.
He's saying, keep doing what you're doing. He says, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed. And now from childhood, you have been acquainted with the sacred writings. Check out this line, all scripture, Whenever the Bible talks about Scripture and you believe these things and you knew these things, they're talking about the Old Testament. 2 Peter 1.20 says, Peter says, Again, Peter talking about the Old Testament. Prophecies. These people in the New Testament era talking about the Old Testament as if it's real, as if it's true, as if indeed all indeed really happened.
