Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
The latest Pompey news. Updates every day from the Pompey Sound News Desk.
We start with a breaking news story that could affect Pompey enormously. Two appeals have been lodged today about the Leicester deduction of six points. Leicester are asking that the deduction is overturned. The Premier League, in a separate appeal, are asking that the deduction is increased to ten or possibly twelve points.
Obviously, either or both decisions, if they're upheld, make the relegation battle very different.
Chapter 2: What breaking news could impact Pompey's relegation battle?
Here's how the BBC are explaining it.
Leicester City are officially fighting the six-point deduction they were handed for breaking the English Football League's financial rules. The penalty, dished out by an independent commission earlier this month, immediately plunged the Foxes into a relegation battle, dropping them to 20th in the Championship.
Things have only gotten worse since, with two straight losses leaving them in the bottom three, and two points adrift of safety. In a separate move, the Premier League is also appealing the commission's decision, arguing that Leicester should have been sanctioned for filing their annual accounts late.
Chapter 3: Why is Leicester appealing their six-point deduction?
The league is pushing for a quick resolution, stating they want the appeal, resolved urgently, and in any event before the end of the EFL season, to provide certainty for all clubs. Both sides have now submitted their appeals, and a new board will be appointed to hear the case. Leicester, who just appointed Gary Rowett as their new head coach, have yet to comment on their appeal.
However, when the punishment was first announced, the club slammed it as disproportionate. In a statement they said. While the Commission's findings significantly reduced the unprecedented scale of the sanction originally sought by the Premier League, the recommendation remains disproportionate, and does not adequately reflect the mitigating factors presented.
The whole issue revolves around Profit and Sustainability Rules , which state Premier League clubs can't lose more than £105m over three years. Leicester's recent accounts revealed hefty losses, including £89.7m for the 2022-23 season, and a club record £92.5 million the year before.
Chapter 4: How does the Premier League's appeal affect Leicester's situation?
Although the Premier League initially charged the club, the EFL took over the case following Leicester's relegation and applied its own financial rules. A key point of contention was the timeframe. Leicester argued their finances should be assessed over 36 months, not 37, a discrepancy caused by a delay in filing their accounts.
The commission agreed on the 36-month period, but that still put the club's overspend at £20.8m above the £83m limit. While the panel could have hit them with a maximum 12-point penalty, it settled on six, noting the club's improving financial position over the period in question.
So there we are then, intricate to the point of a labyrinthine, and the likes of us and you and me, dear listener, Pompey fan. We're never going to be able to get our heads around the minutiae of it, but if you go to the bottom line, which is where we like to go...
Either that points deduction is erased, in which case Leicester elevate themselves, I think it's to four points ahead of us in the relegation battle, or it's consolidated by the second commission, the new commission who's hearing the appeal. If they go with the Premier League's suggestion and request, then they'll lose an extra four, possibly six points.
And in a nutshell, we'll only have to stay ahead of Oxford in order to stay up.
Now that the January transfer window is shut, Pompey's focus is shifting from new signings to securing the futures of their key players. Sporting director Rich Hughes has made it clear that the club's next priority is sorting out contracts for the seven players whose deals run out at the end of the season.
That list includes standout performer Zach Swanson along with Connor Ogilvie, Andre Dizell, Marlon Pack, Jordan Archer, Ruben Swan, and Toby Stewart. Swanson, in particular, is having his best season yet in a Pompey shirt. Since being shifted to an unfamiliar left-back role in November to cover for injuries, he has been a revelation.
The former Arsenal man who joined back in July 2022, has racked up 104 appearances and five goals for the Blues, but with his contract up this summer, his future is a key point of discussion. According to Hughes, those talks were put on the backburner during the hectic transfer window.
There were some ongoing conversations about player contracts, but there's an unwritten rule that everything goes on hold in January because everyone is focused on other things, he told journalists. Now that the window has closed we'll be picking those conversations back up, he continued. We need to look at what we need for the summer, where we want to build, strengthen, and who we want to retain.

Chapter 5: What are the implications of financial rules on Leicester's penalties?
Will Evans Jones. Millwall will be looking to show they belong at the top end of the division having emerged as one of the form sides in the division. Their style of play in both boxes, along with an impressive January window, make them one of the most feared teams currently.
After registering their 16th win over Sheffield Wednesday last time out, their confidence will be high coming up against Portsmouth. John Messina will be looking to register back-to-back wins to increase the gap between them and the relegation spots. However, I think they'll be left wanting. I'll go for a home win just.
Millwall 1 Portsmouth 0 James Ray Portsmouth have found some big results on the road at Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton Athletic of late. But a trip to the den is a whole different kettle of fish. Millwall are in the hunt for automatic promotion and will be targeting nothing but a win here. That doesn't mean they'll be taking Pompey lightly though with John Messinio's side a stern one.
If Portsmouth play like they did on Tuesday night, we could be in for a good game here. Ultimately though I do feel the Lions will have too much for the Championship strugglers in this one. I'll be going for a 2-0 home win as Millwall continue their march for Premier League football. Prediction. Millwall 2, Portsmouth 0.
Well, we covered their predictions for the last game against Charlton and they got it completely wrong. They predicted that Pompey would not score and that Charlton would win. Our Steve Bone went for a sneaky Pompey win, which had him standing out from the crowd of predictions yet again. So well done, Steve.
Are we taking these two predictions that we're going to lose again and not score a goal again? Well, you know, fool me once, shame on... you fool me twice shame on me i don't quite know what that means but um it'll do
