Chapter 1: What recent news is impacting Portsmouth football?
The latest Pompey news. Updates every day from the Pompey Sound News Desk.
John Messina is asked about the Derby atmosphere, protocols between rivals and his spat at St Mary's with Will Still.
we will offer ton under a drink after sunday's game absolutely he can have whatever is in the fridge at saint mary's obviously a lot was made of it with will after the game i thought he came in strong on the handshake and that was it i thought it was a funny moment to be honest i spoke to the media after the game about what both sets of fans would expect from their players from the staff but ultimately we are not friends we're there to try to win a game we're not there to make friends with anyone
I've had a few arguments with managers which haven't been highlighted I've had some really strong words. Myself and Frank Lampard had that bit of handbags on the bench, and then we came in and had a drink afterwards. It was fine we just laughed about it it's a bit pathetic two grown men squabbling with each other. That happens a lot on the touchline.
Chapter 2: What happened during the spat between John Massino and Will Still?
Sometimes it spills over and sometimes there's a bit of tension in the tunnel afterwards and people don't go in for a drink. Sometimes it's absolutely fine. You shake hands, laugh and move on. Will didn't offer me a drink. It was left at that. We will always go in if we get invited. We didn't get invited that day. That's fine.
Whether we win, lose or draw, if the opposition coaching staff invite us in, we'll go in. We always invite people in to fratten. At St Mary's, we set up to try to not let Southampton get a foothold in the game, and we did that really well after three or four minutes. We were dominant in the first half, so naturally the atmosphere dropped.
It became a bit more difficult for us in the second half but I suppose a drab 0-0 away from home with the pressure of that first South Coast derby wasn't a terrible result for us. I expect it to be a different game on Sunday. There have been some really special Fratton Park nights. We've had it time and time again over the three years we've been here.
There have been some really special Fratton Park nights, some really stand out. The evening game we had against Bolton in the first season, and then the one in the promotion winning season, the night we beat Barnsley to win League One.
When we beat Oxford with Christian Sadie's goal, March 2024, while there were so many last year because the home form was so good and our away form was pretty poor, it has probably been slightly more difficult this year because we've not been quite as free-flowing and high-scoring as last season, but we've still had some incredible atmospheres at home. As always, very interesting.
And of course, Will still lasted at Southampton about as long as his handshake with John Massino. After that game. And I'm lucky enough to have been invited for a drink after a game. Two of us from Pompey Sound by John Massino. And yes, there is a very well stocked fridge. And he purchased himself on his desk and says, help yourself to everybody. And he sees people in a routine routine.
order of events he does the press because he has those media commitments he's always asked the same questions by journalists week after week if Pompey win John you must be very pleased three changes what was the thinking there if Pompey lose John you must be very disappointed two changes what was the thinking there and he grins and bears it and he does all that and then he meets with his coaching staff in private and
And they go into a huddle in John's office. And yeah, I should think it's help yourself, anything you want from the fridge. And they discuss the last 90 minutes whilst it's still raw in their mind. And then finally, it's friends and family.

Chapter 3: How do managers handle tensions after a match?
And we qualified somewhere along the line as friends and family. So in we went. And it was fascinating. John was engaging, cheerful.
articulate very very friendly slapping people on the back and swigging I think it looked like a bottle of Italian beer might have been a Peroni if so he's got good taste and we fell in with Andy Cullen actually funnily enough we had a good natter with him found out that his background isn't far away from what was going on in John's office which was necking some beer and
because I didn't know Andy Cullen used to be a senior executive at a brewery in Norwich and that was how come he shook hands with Delia Smith and eased himself sideways into the world of football so there was some good chatting going on very little of it was about football I did notice that Andy Cullen was drinking Diet Coke which of course is sensible uh
I was getting the train home, so I wasn't drinking Diet Coke. But yeah, help yourself to whatever's in the fridge. John Massino gets it right at every twist and turn. We'll hear a little bit more about Frank Lampard's behaviour later in this bulletin. But once again, it's feather in the cap and hands off, hats off. Well, hats off and hands off.
Our manager, if you're thinking about giving him a call, the big six for a couple of seasons at least. Hopefully. The football news agency The 72 asked its chief correspondents for their forecast of Sunday's game. Here's their verdicts.
James Ray says, I won't be alone in hoping this edition of the South Coast Derby has more to offer than the first. It was a pretty dull match to watch given the pre-game excitement over the long-awaited return of a brilliant rivalry. A lot has changed since then too, especially at Southampton.
Tondor Ekert will be keen to express the importance of this game to his players as it looked a little lost on them last time out, but the rookie manager's lack of experience could be a factor to consider. Massinho still has Portsmouth supporters firmly on his side, and two positive results in quick succession has boosted the mood despite their peril.
As their arch-rivals arrive at Fratton Park, Pompey will look to bring the crowd into the game quickly and start fast. There's no hiding that Southampton have the advantage in terms of quality. However with the home faithful behind them and some solid results over the past week, I just wonder whether Portsmouth might claim a huge win over their biggest foes. Portsmouth 2 Southampton 1
Harry Mayall says Fratton Park will be fired up for this one, Portsmouth have seen an upturn in form recently so will be in confident mood. Pompey have lost only once in their last seven league games. Therefore they will fancy their chances here against their rivals. Southampton needed their most recent win over Sheffield United. That result has eased some pressure off Tonda Eckert.

Chapter 4: What strategies did Portsmouth use in their last game against Southampton?
You are. It's because you said I know what I'm talking about. Oh, we're off to see the wizard here. Brilliant.
Okay, Steve, as ever, thank you so much for everything. Thank you. Fingers crossed for Sunday. Everything crossed. Talk soon. Look forward to it.
And you can listen to the whole of Steve's podcast every week by going to Pompey Sound Podcast on your podcast provider or you can pick him up sporadically here, there and everywhere on Pompey Sound's regular output digitally or also on Smart Speaker if you've got an A-L-E-X-A. Excuse me, still got that tickle. And Steve's prediction, really worth noting, 1-0 Pompey and Bishop to score.
The Football Association has today published its findings after an investigation into what was described as an incident, when Southampton played Coventry City five days before Christmas last year. The 16-page report found that players and representatives of the clubs were guilty of inappropriate behaviour, and fined Southampton £22,000 and Coventry £30,000.
The incident, described in the press as a melee, went off moments after a Coventry player received a red card for a bad foul. Southampton had delivered a set of written responses to the allegations against them including an acceptance of the basic charges, but requested a personal hearing. Coventry accepted the charges but offered no apologies or explanation, and refused to attend the hearing.
The FA heard from four Southampton players who claimed that the Coventry head coach Frank Lampard triggered the animosity by fist-pumping in the direction of Southampton fans, and in so doing, leaving his technical area and entering the pitch where, Southampton argued, several Southampton players rebuked him for his behaviour.
Southampton alleged that Lampard's response to the players asking him to calm down, was insulting. The hearing also took into account Coventry's recent record of inappropriate behaviour, in particular three recent occasions when they were fined. So I wouldn't say the sending off happened just before the final whistle. It was a good bit before the final whistle. It was a bad foul.
It was a flying in shins, sorry, studs up into the shins tackle. It was a straight red card. and obviously it inflamed tempers, and the Southampton fans gave the player a lot of stick, and Lampard might have argued, if he'd attended the hearing, that he was only sticking up for his own colleagues. However, the tension rose on the pitch and around the pitch.
with fans, Southampton fans, no doubt mistreating, maltreating, or as they saw it, treating with reasonable disrespect Frank Lampard, who we know from his last visit to Fratton Park can be a volatile character down on the touchline. And there's a reason why this story is included in a Pompey Sound news bulletin. And it is because, A, we are playing Southampton this coming weekend.
