Transcription

Chapter 1: What is the main topic discussed in this episode?

0.031 - 10.913 Unknown

The score! I got five. It's time for Five On It. Raheem Harrison-Roney. Bring you five topics on their minds today. On 104.3 The Score.

0

12.596 - 19.069 Marshall Harris

I got five on it. Number one. What was your biggest takeaway from Bears Assistant General Manager Jeff King's press conference on Tuesday?

0

19.235 - 38.053 Unknown

That he's just as good as anybody at not answering questions and not really saying too many interesting things. And that I wish Ryan Poles, the guy who is actually the general manager, would just be the one to take questions instead of giving practice reps to the assistants in this case. But I will answer the question. And I guess his...

0

Chapter 2: What are the main takeaways from Bears Assistant GM Jeff King's press conference?

38.033 - 58.219 Unknown

Jeff King sort of back and forth. Jeff King was fine, by the way, did a good job up there, comported himself well for the first time. But I do wish the actual GM would answer these questions. But the unconvincing evaluation of Tyreek Stevenson, like he's great, he's great, he's great. There's things he can work on. There's things he can work on. He's just getting started. He's still young.

0

58.199 - 78.199 Unknown

It was just like this weird, again, unconvincing, if he was trying to convince us of anything, but I certainly was not convinced at all. It actually sort of inspired me to realize as I did the deep dive on the cornerbacks that the Bears badly need a cornerback in their first three picks. So that at least got me thinking about that.

0

78.179 - 100.813 Unknown

I did like hearing, and it's just a thing that GMs will say, but he did talk about the goal of the draft is to get competition at lots of positions and to have hard decisions once camp breaks. It did get me thinking about all the spots that there is competition, including at safety. I believe that there is definitely competition at the cornerback position.

0

100.853 - 122.212 Unknown

I even think that you could make a case for competition at the linebacker spot, depending on who is fully intact once we actually get going in training camp. So I did appreciate those things. And lastly, the fact that he did name check my guy Dan Weterer like three or four times throughout that press conference, which I like, man. Dan, Dan, Dan, Dan. He Dan'd him like four times.

0

122.533 - 123.735 Danny Parkins

Respect must be paid.

123.875 - 127.963 Unknown

I love the respect going to my Take the North partner and of the athletic Dan Weterer.

128.078 - 150.762 Danny Parkins

I feel like the biggest takeaway for me was that my football sensibility was shaky in the way he described the situation at safety and maybe that they had two starting safeties on the roster. And if that is the case, then maybe I have underestimated Cam Lewis and what he can do. No, I'm being serious. Maybe I have underestimated. Yeah.

150.742 - 166.523 Danny Parkins

Because I'm just going off of what he's done in the past and maybe in a bigger role, Cam Lewis could be a guy. I'm squinting when I say this because I'm trying to see it. I don't see it yet, but maybe it just needs to be presented to me in such a way.

166.503 - 184.424 Danny Parkins

After they pick a safety at number 25 or after they trade back and take a safety with that early second-round pick, either way, then I'll be like, okay, now I understand why he said that because it was all just to throw us off the scent that a safety was coming at the first-round pick. But, yeah, back to what you said to start the thing, Grody.

Chapter 3: How do the Bears evaluate their cornerback position ahead of the NFL Draft?

250.488 - 263.095 Danny Parkins

I think the move here is to take Javier Assad, send him back to AAA, and let him continue to be stretched out for the next inevitable season. injury to someone in the starting rotation because that's just how it goes over the course of 162.

0

263.436 - 283.138 Danny Parkins

I think that's the answer here is to let Colin Ray continue to be the guy on the big league roster who makes starts and Javier Saad continue to do that, but do it. at the minor league level so that he can be ready to go when they need him, whether that's a doubleheader, when you get to get the extra call-up, or something else. But I like what Colin Ray is providing.

0

283.759 - 302.309 Danny Parkins

He's comfortable either way, so I could see them moving him to the bullpen. I just don't think they will based on what he's looked like his last few times through the rotation. He's a part of the rotation. He is a sixth starter in every way, but he's not just a swingman anymore. He's been elevated from swingman to sixth starter. Who happens to pitch in the bullpen if they're fully healthy?

0

302.329 - 310.483 Danny Parkins

And guess what? This season, until they make a move at the deadline to add an ace, he's going to be a guy in the rotation. Mm-hmm.

0

311.527 - 329.89 Unknown

I narrowed this question down in my brain to which starter would I prefer to be on the Cubs? Do I prefer right now having Colin Ray pitch every fifth day, or would I prefer to have Javier Assad pitching every fifth day? And for me, it's Colin Ray pitching every fifth day. I just have more confidence in him.

329.87 - 346.929 Unknown

Right or wrong, I'm always worried when Javier Saad goes out there because of the hittable factor. He was very good in his last start against the Mets, five and two-thirds, one run on three hits. So I'm watching and seeing what is in front of me, but he always has had this thing where he gets himself into trouble.

346.989 - 363.068 Unknown

He's been pretty good at getting himself out of the trouble, but eventually you don't get yourself out of that trouble. I am just more comfortable with Colin Ray right now. So, yes, and I like the way you said it. Yeah, tell Javier Assad, look, man, you did fine. We're going to need you again, so we're going to keep you stretched out.

363.449 - 382.152 Unknown

And then I leave a little bit of room for the old six-man rotation and those questions that inevitably will pop up at some time during the season. Do you go to a six-man at this point? I don't think you do that, but it's just something to consider in all that as well.

384.73 - 393.82 Marshall Harris

Number three. It's five on it on 104.3 The Score with Marshall Harrison. Mark Grody, here's question number three. Is there any stopping White Sox slugger Munataka Murakami?

Chapter 4: What are the Bears' needs in the upcoming NFL Draft?

435.524 - 463.911 Unknown

the old can he adjust back and get back on track but it really looks nice right now but i want to let's get through that first big slump because it's inevitable and see how we adjust to that and see what the numbers look like by the end of the season you can argue he already had his first big slump because he had the four homers and then nothing for a while for a while and he was striking his batting average was sinking sinking sinking and that caused the ops to sink sink sink you are just in this land of munitaka murakami that nobody can take you out of

0

463.891 - 483.021 Danny Parkins

Well, no. I want to point out, because he's now homered in four straight games, that OPS is now back up close to 1,000 at 978. The batting average... The batting average, 234. You can live with that, can't you? You can live with that. You know how I know you can live with that? Because Mike Trout's going to the Hall of Fame, right? Yeah.

0

483.041 - 486.486 Danny Parkins

He's been one of the best hitters in baseball all year, right? Yeah. He's hitting 235.

0

486.686 - 495.298 Unknown

Well, right. We talked about Kyle Schwarber. I mean, that's who he is. Anthony Rizzo used to hit in the 230s. It's acceptable in this day and age to hit 230 as long as you've got pop.

0

495.278 - 522.62 Danny Parkins

Let me give you this stat courtesy of OptiStats over on the old artist formerly known as Twitter. Monotaka Murakami has now combined for 30 home runs and walks through his first 23 games in Major League Baseball. That is three games fewer than any other player to debut in the live ball era, a.k.a. since 1920, has needed to reach that total. There's one way to stop him. Give him the old freebie.

523.1 - 544.539 Danny Parkins

Give him the old base on balls. Problem is, as you mentioned, Grody, if the guy behind him and the guy behind him are going to continue to do what they've been doing, Miguel Vargas, whose average is slowly ticking up to that magical Mendoza line number, and Colson Montgomery, who's now above that number, if they're going to continue to mash, that's going to be problematic for opposing pitchers.

544.899 - 567.021 Danny Parkins

So the one way you have of stopping him is to put him on base. Free ride. Problem is, if the guys in the Sox order, as they have been doing, Sama Tanachi included. Oh, did I mention Kyle Teal's coming back soon? Yeah, you did. then, yeah, the only way you can stop him is hope the rest of the lineup does not produce. Because right now, if you throw strikes, he's hitting them a long way.

567.141 - 589.927 Unknown

Other rookies that have hit home runs in four consecutive games, Colson Montgomery, Matt Davidson. Oh, you know what? Before when I did this, I left the guy off. But Kittle, I mentioned Ron Kittle in 83. But, oh, my gosh, I'm sorry. That 1970, I'm sorry to the Rich McKinney fans out there. 1970, a rookie by the name of Rich McKinney. Hit four home runs in four days.

592.631 - 611.26 Marshall Harris

Before we move on from baseball, we do have what I will qualify as breaking news to alert you to because we were wondering if there would be a certain former White Sox pitcher that would join the Cubs rotation. Well, breaking news on the score is sponsored by IDOT. Speeding in a work zone is a no-win. Mind the signs. Avoid the fines.

Chapter 5: How does Danny Parkins view the Bears' draft strategy?

637.974 - 653.486 Marshall Harris

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Now on to the question. Number four. ESPN's Sean Strania joined 104.3 The Score's Mullian Hall this morning and said this about the way Billy Donovan stepping down from his role as head coach has impacted the team's general manager search.

0

653.867 - 668.412 Shams Sharania

I also never got the feel as this process kicked off Especially after the season when everyone knew Billy Donovan's future was up in the air. I never got the feel that there were people shying away from interviewing people that were turning the Bulls down based on Billy Donovan's status.

0

668.492 - 679.148 Shams Sharania

I think Billy Donovan just overall is so well respected and fairly easy to work with and for from a front office perspective when you talk to people in Oklahoma City and Chicago.

0

679.709 - 687.42 Marshall Harris

That's Shams Sharania with our Mully and Haw this morning right here on 104.3 The Score. So are you buying what Shams told Mully and Haw there?

0

688.767 - 714.885 Danny Parkins

I think I believe that people were not turned off by Billy Donovan in terms of, hey, if you give me a call, if you reach out, I'm interested in having a conversation about your opening. And they understood probably that Billy Donovan was going to make some type of decision, but long before this interview process really got underway and took shape.

714.905 - 719.192 Danny Parkins

So yes, I don't think anyone was saying, Oh, Billy Donovan's your coach. I'm not interested in the job.

Chapter 6: What are the implications of trading up or down in the NFL Draft?

719.252 - 732.831 Danny Parkins

I think they were waiting to see how it played out. And I think that's how this played out. And Billy Donovan made the correct decision for all parties involved. He understood that this is not the way a functional organization works, uh,

0

733.503 - 756.051 Danny Parkins

I'm glad that he made the decision that he made, not only for himself, get out, but also so that the Bulls can have someone in charge who really is calling all the shots. Yeah. There has to be a HBIC head basketball guy in charge. I guess HBGIC head basketball guy or girl in charge. What? Yeah. A woman? Women can do things.

0

Chapter 7: How does the Cubs for a Cure Radiothon relate to the Bears and their draft?

756.071 - 768.756 Danny Parkins

It's 2026. So a lot of women can do things a lot better than a lot of men. Oh, I know. If you haven't noticed. A what? A who? Ray. There's a whole Vegas story.

0

768.797 - 769.317 Unknown

There is.

0

769.678 - 775.085 Marshall Harris

What? A woman? We got to explain that story now later, David.

0

775.105 - 775.846 Unknown

We will. We will.

0

Chapter 8: What are the next steps for the Bears after the NFL Draft?

775.866 - 806.288 Unknown

We'll save. Yeah, we have not unloaded all of our Vegas-ness. We've got stories to tell later. But I think the second Michael Reinsdorf said in his press conference when they fired Arturis and Eversley, the second he said, just summing it up, I'll AI it for you, that you have to take Billy Donovan as your coach if you get this job. That's the exact moment that Billy Donovan said,

0

806.268 - 830.032 Unknown

I'm out because Billy Donovan is all that. He is so well respected because he understands basketball. He understands the way the NBA works. He understands that there's no way you can hire somebody and have a coach. standing in your way that you have to take on. That insults everybody's sensibilities. And Billy did it in a classy way where he left.

0

830.052 - 840.055 Unknown

But that, to me, that's the second where Billy Donovan is like, sorry, I'm out of here. There's no way that I'm going to be the coach that has to be taken on by a general manager because he knows better.

0

840.524 - 855.985 Danny Parkins

Yeah, yeah, exactly. Exactly.

0

857.939 - 874.734 Marshall Harris

You know, I've had some difficult conversations with people that I care about, with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players.

875.635 - 898.8 Mark Grote

Those have been positive and productive conversations. We believe in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions. That includes me. That starts with me. We never want our actions to negatively affect the team. We never want to be the cause of a distraction. Those are comments and questions that I've answered for the team and with the team.

898.88 - 922.978 Mark Grote

We'll keep those private and to ourselves. I care deeply about this football team, and I'm excited to coach them. I also know that I'm going to attack each day with humility and focus. And what I can promise you is that my family, this organization, the team, the staff, the coaches, everybody, our fans, most importantly, will get the best version of me going forward.

923.379 - 932.31 Mark Grote

And that's what I know, and I'm excited to do that. But I wanted to, one, just address this and thank you for your patience in dealing with the private and personal matter.

932.56 - 943.735 Marshall Harris

That is Patriots coach Mike Vrabel addressing the scandal involving him and Diana Rossini. Did your perception of the Vrabel-Rossini photos change after hearing what he had to say there?
