Who is Herb Howard and why does he open the show with a quirky question?

Marshall Harris 0:00
Marshall. He smells great. And that, to me, that is bonus points. Herb immediately showed he was going to be somebody asking meaningful questions. He's going to ask a question that everyone else in the room is going to want to know the answers.
Herb Howard 0:11
What then happens that they can't get out and get snapped before? It's a great question. Tell him I shower, Brody. Tell him. Okay, well, yeah.
Mark Grote 0:20
Get a toke of this guy. He smells great. I'm telling you.
Herb Howard 0:22
Well, thank you so much, Herb, for joining us. This has been a lot of fun. It's always fun with you guys. You are absolutely amazing. I listen to you guys when you don't invite me, so it's really, really cool.
Mark Grote 0:33
He smells of Irish spring as we welcome you back into Rahimi Harrison Grody. Maybe dial? Are you more of a dial guy?
Marshall Harris 0:39
He knows that he's not only always invited, we will find out what his routine is with soap, colognes, and have something available to him when he comes in studio Friday.
Mark Grote 0:48
He's live at Hallis Hall right now. Herb Howard, what is your preferred bar or bottle of soap? Hey, this is radio, man. No free promo. Tell somebody to cut a check, and I'll tell them what soap I wear. Wow, he must have just taken one of those Odyssey tests right there. I don't know, man. That's pretty good. Good on you, Herb. What's going on out there, man? What are you seeing on the field? No pads today, right? The pads came off? Yeah, a little bit of a dry day, to be honest with you, on the practice field. Pretty much a glorified walkthrough, if you will. Just helmets on today, no shirt to pass, no shell. So guys just got a lot of mental reps in. Like I said, it was a little bit of a walkthrough pace. I'm sure the team got something out of it in terms of getting the mental reps and understanding and seeing things, but not a whole lot of action out there on the field.
Mark Grote 1:33
I don't know how entertaining it was for fans. It wasn't another open practice today, but I think the Bears were just kind of – Yep, yep. get some mental work in. And plus they had the person, let them recover a little bit. They'll be back in pass tomorrow. But today, honestly, not a ton of action on the field.
Marshall Harris 1:50
Well, there's action at the podium though, right? Because people were talking, people I've been waiting to hear from, especially that dude that's got the new money, right?
Mark Grote 1:58
New money.

What did Herb say about his favorite soap and how does it set the tone for the episode?

Mark Grote 2:00
Darnell Wright, man, obviously gets the big contract extension, becomes the highest paid Wright tackle ever. And so, you know, I think he deserves that. And it was validation not only for him, but it was also a validation for Ryan Poles, which we're going to get into that a little bit later because he had a great interaction with our own Chris Emma that I thought was really, really good. But I think the whole day kind of led itself to Darnell Wright and the Bears running game because first thing this morning we talked to offensive coordinator Press Taylor. And in talking to Coach Taylor, he talked about the running game. I think it was Patrick Finley who asked him about using the running game and it being efficient.
Mark Grote 2:34
And he says efficient is not a word we use around here.
Marshall Harris 2:38
I would tell you, I don't think Ben's ever mentioned the word efficiency. We talk about explosive. I mean, we are trying to attack a defense. I think there's a perception a lot of people are going to run the ball. We're going to stay efficient. We're going to control the clock. We are looking to attack a defense. We're to create run lanes, to create explosives. We don't look at the run game as a way to stay on track. We look at the run game as a way to attack defenses and really be explosive and continue to just put our foot on the gas the entire game.
Mark Grote 3:06
Okay, love that concept. It's not just a way to add to the long drive, which Ben Johnson did last year. Everything's got to be explosive with Ben Johnson, and I love it, Herb.
Marshall Harris 3:17
It sounds like he's in line with what Caleb Williams was talking about, talking about more big plays this year.
Mark Grote 3:23
Yeah, it tracks with everything that you hear from Ben Johnson. You have a conversation with him, you know he's absolutely trying to annihilate the opponent.
