Ben Johnson: Improving Bears' pass rush starts with coaching
27 Apr 2026
Chapter 1: What did Ben Johnson say about improving the Bears' pass rush?
Our staff is amazing at what they do, the time that they spend on it, and the ability to work together. We found great alignment, and that created a lot of good clarity, which resulted in a good draft. I know we got better as a football team. We added competition, and usually when you add competition, good things happen.
That is Ryan Poles.
Chapter 2: How does competition influence the Bears' performance?
This is Rahimi Harrison-Grody on 104.3 The Score. And we are talking about our impressions of the Bears draft. We'll ask for grades in our noon hour. We're asking you what you think of it now. 312-644-6767.
Chapter 3: What improvements are expected from the Bears' defensive players?
Was it enough? People are texting in as well. We heard what we had to say about it. I want you guys to listen to what Ben Johnson had to say when it came to the Bears' pass rush and how they have to address it now that they did not go for defensive line until very late in the draft.
You and Ryan both were pretty open all offseason about needing pass rush improvement.
Chapter 4: Why is coaching emphasized as a solution for the Bears' defense?
The fact that you didn't sign a big name one you can brave to see you can draft an edge rusher How is it going to get better with the same guys who were out there last year?
Well, we're certainly gonna coach better than what we did a year ago And I like I said before it starts there. We've made a concerted effort and how we're gonna get that done We were excited about the guys that ended up finishing the season on IR the trajectory that they were on both dio and Shamar
When you look at it from the start of the season to the point where they both got injured, we saw growth and we saw them turn in the right direction in terms of what we want to see on game day. I think Sweat had one of his better years in the NFL, whether that shows up in the sack total or not.
Chapter 5: What are the implications of not drafting a defensive line early?
He's a very complete player, both run game and pass game. And I think you saw tremendous growth from Booker when we were finally able to get him back as well. So the combination of us being able to coach better and those guys taking the next step, as part of this system. Um, you know, I, I think we're, we got some pretty good pieces to work with.
Chapter 6: How do injuries impact the Bears' defensive strategy?
So that is essentially the, we have passed rush at home answer.
One thing that is crystal clear about the bears as was stated before the draft. And now even after the draft, they are very content betting on themselves. And when I say betting on themselves, I mean, Ryan polls, Ben Johnson, his coaching staff, the, They're convinced that what they have is good enough if they just do a better job in terms of coaching them up.
Chapter 7: What does the Bears' coaching staff believe about their current roster?
And I know coaching them up, it comes off as very cliche, but there's a reason why they paid Dio Dangbo the money. There's a reason why they made the trade for Montez Sweat and gave him the extension. There's a reason why they believe that Austin Booker's back half of last season could come out to a full season if given the opportunity to continue to
adding on weight, whether you want to talk about Javon Dexter, whether you want to talk about the guys that they brought in from outside the organization, you like what they have, at least I like what they have, as far as the safety spot goes after replenishing what was going on in the backfield.
A healthy Jalen Johnson, and up front, where they did not draft an edge, and they did not bring anybody in that was at least high profile.
Chapter 8: How can the Bears' pass rush evolve this season?
Shamar Turner does exist, albeit we've seen very limited Shamar Turner, but I just think, and this is where you get into that Kid Icarus territory, right?
Because there's confidence in knowing what you think you can do for a football team and your players, and there's this idea that if you fly a little too close to the sun because you have too much confidence in what you have already in-house, those wings could burn off and you could take a free fall, especially in this division.
this year it's a little bit of a desperation heave like it's kind of like weedsy and i were kind of joking around about it how how many times that we've heard either either dennis allen or ryan poles or ben johnson do what ben johnson just did and go through the guys that they're excited hey the trajectory of dio dangbo we were happy with him i'll i'll also use words like potential and projection because he's a projection signing that's what he was
Remember, I asked Ryan Poles the first day that Dio Odengbo was signed when we were sitting in the auditorium and you look at the numbers and you're like, where's all the sacks? And he said, you got to look at the tape, Grody. You got to look at the tape. You got to see what he does. You got to see how he affects the quarterback. Still waiting to see that.
Montez Sweat had a good year or a good enough year.
He had
he did he did so that's why i said a good enough year i still and i think everybody should still want more from montez sweat you should want more from grady jarrett but we are back to the their fail safe is to tell us that they are excited about those guys and that they're on the right trajectory and you're damn right they're gonna have to coach better than they did a year ago yeah look
The offense did a good job of developing players last year. The defense did not do a great job of developing players last year. Dennis Allen, it's your turn to develop players on this defense.
I just keep going back to watching the Super Bowl and seeing the standard bearer of defense in the NFL in the Seahawks. And it was opposite of what Ben Johnson, for example, said when he said, you want the pass rush to come in when you have a lead. No, I want the pass rush to come in immediately. If I'm even thinking about a stop, I want that to happen. And it wasn't coverage sacks necessarily.
