What is the main topic discussed in this episode?
Rahimi Harrison-Grody. Oh, sorry, bud. Watch your profanity. You said pop of the mind.
No, no. You know what? You've got to let it flow. Our poor producer, Ray, spilled his coffee. So thanks for christening our studio over here.
No, no. It's okay.
It's okay.
Middays 10 to 2 on 104.3 The Score. Yeah, I think a general idea, you're not going to see all of the emotions that we're going to have here. Nothing crazy, nothing out of this world, but we just give them a structure for Kayla, for Daly, for Noah, and we start the process. That's when I skip, and that's the first step for them. And then, of course, later, we start the NBA camp.
That is Tiago Splitter, the Bulls head coach, talking at practice this week about what he wants to do in summer league. And that said, we bring in our guest, Julia Poe. She is at ByJuliaPoe on Twitter. She's the Bulls and the Sky beat writer for the Chicago Tribune. And she is kind enough to join us on Twitch with a really cool background. Twitch.tv slash TheScoreChicago. Julia, how are you today?
I'm good. I am packed and ready to head off to the desert for summer league. So I'm feeling pretty excited about this week.
How long are you going to be there, Julia? Because that's one of those trips where I'm like, yeah, that's nice, except for it's really, really hot outside. And I don't know, I got like a 72 hour rule in Vegas, maybe 96 if you're lucky.
Absolutely. I mean, they're for a little bit of a shorter time than I would have preferred just with them playing these first three games against kind of the heavy hitters with the top three picks. I'm just getting that first game in and then coming back because of some family stuff. But even just that first game, I'm excited to check that out and be able to see what's going on with that.
That's how we feel. You've got three straight games against the three players who were taken ahead of Caleb Williams in the draft. I know we can't get a ton from what we're going to see, but at least to get this kind of measurement in a game setting, I think that's pretty valuable.
Absolutely. I mean, I think it's really fun to kind of hear the difference between how Caleb talks about it and how Tiago Splitter talks about it. Tiago's very patient. He's like, everyone draws too many conclusions from Summer League. It's so easy to put so much pressure on this. We have very incremental goals. And then Caleb is coming in and being like, we're winning summer league. We're dominating. We're getting out there. We're like, he is just so ready. I think just to play in general, you have to remember how long it's been since he's played a competitive basketball game just in general. So it's kind of been fun to hear that push pull of Tiago being like, okay, slow down there, young fella. And then Caleb just really being ready to let it rip and get back on the court.
Are they letting him play or they're going to put a cap on the number of games? What's the story there?
We have been told that they are trying to have all three of their main guys, so Caleb, Daylon Swain, and then also Noah Asenge, who is essentially getting a second shot at a rookie season.
Who is Julia Poe and what beats does she cover for Chicago sports?
All three of those guys are going to try to play all the way through. I love it. Obviously... things come up Noah last year had like the little knock on his knee the moment that that happens if any of these guys take a knock you kind of have to expect that they're going to pull them immediately because that's how this goes but they're trying to get them in there and get as many reps as possible especially with Thiago coaching those first two games yeah that's just as compelling as any of this Julia is the fact that Thiago is coaching those first two games what are you looking for when you see that happen Yeah, I think it's hard to draw too many conclusions in terms of system from Summer League.
Just in general, the personnel is going to be so different. There's not a Josh Giddey kind of counterpart on a Summer League team. So you're not going to be able to kind of get the full picture.
