Thanks for having me on, guys. Of course. Let's start with the Yankees series. You know, White Sox lose the first two games. When you're thinking about this last one, how important was it to you that they ended up getting this finale?
I mean, yeah, it was big. And we heard John Triffin say, wow, after he hit the Grand Slam. And it got me thinking there have been a lot of. Wow moments with this team this year. Just think of some of the clutch hits, the walk-offs that they've had. Edgar Carroll against the Cubs.
What does Chuck Garfine think about the Sox's resilience?
You had Miguel Vargas with a walk-off. Brady Montgomery, his Major League debut, hits a walk-off. And even though last night was not technically a walk-off, it felt like it. I mean, a pinch hit, grand slam. In Yankee Stadium, Andrew Benintendi coming off the bench. I looked it up. He was only batting 140 as a pinch hitter in his career. It is not easy to do it. But the White Sox have this wow thing happening. And when you lose the first two games like they did in this series, and it ended a stretch where they were playing the Phillies. And I'm including the Phillies in this because that's a really tough team. Phillies. And then you go and play three straight first place teams in the Braves, Dodgers, and the Yankees.
And you go six and five against those teams. and you end it with that, and then John Burke strikes out the last guy.
How are the White Sox managing injuries to key players?
It's kind of weird. You start with an opener, and you end with the starter. He went the distance after that. It was quite a statement victory to me, not for the whole season, but just shows me what this team is made of.
It was so needed, too, Chuck, and we saw the opener in Brian Hudson, but to see Grant Taylor up at one point in the pin... and to see Sean Burke come out, not for one more inning, but two more innings to finish that off, career-high swings and misses with 20. What does that signify to you when we talk about this Sox team? I thought the offense would be spectacular, and they have been, but the pitching has been just good enough so far.
Yeah, they have some holes in their pitching staff, but it seems like as we're now into June and you get a better idea, at least for myself, I get a better idea about this team. Do they have all the answers all the time? No, but they find ways to win or at least win enough. to stay aboard, stay in first place, because you just had your two best starters on your team, Davis Martin, Anthony Kaye. They get rocked in those first two games against the Yankees, and you're like, okay, what is this going to mean now? Because now we've got Sean Burke. How will he do? And then he was just lights out. So they... As we get closer, I know we talk so much about the trade deadline. I'm like, the trade deadline's in over a month.
We've got so much time between now and then.
What makes Miguel Vargas a standout player this season?
You could have trades made before that, but for the most part, it's not going to happen that way. Noah Schultz is on a rehab assignment. He'll be coming back up pretty soon, I imagine. But they are keeping the ship afloat without their opening day starter, Shane Smith. Without Noah Schultz, he's on the injured list. Without Munataka Murakami, who will be back hopefully in the relative near future. I don't know. But then you have Kyle Teal, who's on a rehab assignment. Maybe he's back next week. So they're finding ways to win regardless of who the opponent is, their injuries, whatever it might be.
