Chapter 1: What were the highlights of the Cubs' win over the Angels?
Boyd has set down 15 of 16, and he strikes out Darneau. Make it 16 of the last 17 men set down. As Boyd, who struggled on opening day, suffering the loss to Washington, has really responded to this challenge today. Swing and a miss, strike three. Another strikeout for Boyd. That's his 10th of the day. Teodosio is gone. And the batter is Zach Netto.
Very nice day for Matthew Boyd. That call, of course, you know, Pat Hughes. And Ron Coomer, Zach Zaidman on our Cubs radio network. Matthew Boyd, 10 strikeouts to his name against the Angels. He did earn the win, five and two-thirds innings. Gave up only one earned run. He had two walks. and two runs to his name, but only one of them earned, like I mentioned.
Then we saw just three more pitchers. Bing, bang, boom, closed the door, and the Cubs win 6-2, taking 2-3 from the Angels. It was a get-right game, not just for Matthew Boyd, but for the Cubs, Marshall, to be able to take 2-3 from a team for the first time this season.
It's big because it allows them to end that homestand 3-3, which isn't great, but it's certainly not bad. It's a solid start to the season when you take into account now that the starting pitching in that series was absolutely phenomenal. Matt Boyd gives up the one earned run. That's the only earned run that the Cubs starters gave up. Over 16 and a third, they strike out 18 batters.
And here's the most encouraging thing. Last year, if you go back and look at Matthew Boyd's starts, as good as he was, 12-1 at Wrigley, a phenomenal one loss after a Cubs loss, he never reached the bar that he's now reached twice in these two games, which is strikes swinging. He had 18 strikes swinging in his opener, in the season opener for the Cubs. He had 16 in this one.
He looks like a guy whose stuff is great. It's just a matter of can he stay in control.
That's it. And the fastball command, as we had seen, especially in that first game, there's something that may be able to be said about the adjustment coming back from the World Baseball Classic. Different type of game, different type of hitters. You have way more time.
between pitches there than you do in the major leagues although we didn't see as much of a discrepancy this time around so point is get right with your next start because you didn't do what you wanted to do in your first one and that gave me a vote of confidence for him i i don't know how much he needs one
But for him to be able to write the ship in that way and get the swing and miss stuff that he wanted, he's always quick to admit when he's got something he needs to work on and work on something he did. Facing the Angels hitters also, I think, helped. And not just that, but the Cubs on the other side offensively help out with 10 hits and get to Yusei Kikuchi really quickly.

Chapter 2: How did Matthew Boyd perform in this game?
So that was also, I think, part of the help for the Cubs. They started scoring in that third inning.
I love for Matthew Boyd the fact that, and I know, the Angels, to your point, nobody struck out more in baseball as a team than the Angels last season, right? But to get 10 strikeouts and all of them to be on swinging strikes, that says something about how effective your fastball changeup game is. Seven of those were on fastballs. He had a couple on changeup and one on a curve.
I think for the Cubs, though, I was more relieved, and I know this is going to sound maybe a little off the mark, but I was more relieved with what their offense was doing in this game, given what we had seen in terrible weather for hitters.
Well, and keep in mind, we still had questions about, we definitely had this issue last year, about the discussion surrounding lefty aces. that the Cubs had faced. And so because of that, you know, they get the chance to face the lefty finally in Yusei Kikuchi.
And even though this is not the world beater that, say, Mackenzie Gore was last year or Andrew Abbott, for example, and you'd argue whether or not he's the ace, obviously, for the Reds. But point being, they had struggled.
They had struggled against lefties, dominant ones at that, and at least to have that shot in the arm against a lefty to face one finally and be able to produce as well as they did, five-run third inning, that's a good sign.
I think against a guy like Kikuchi, who, as you mentioned, not a world beater, but hey, two-time All-Star, including last year, that has to register as giving this team some confidence. And I love what I saw in the third inning. You mentioned them finally getting some offense going. They knew they couldn't hit the ball out of the park.
I was looking at the graphics of the wind blowing in from every direction in that game. The high, when you factor in the wind chill, was in the 20s. But yet, in the third inning, able to bat around with the benefit of just one extra base hit, a Nico Horner double.

Chapter 3: What does taking 2 out of 3 games mean for the Cubs' season?
And they had four singles, a couple of walks, a sacrifice fly. And you get a five-run inning. And on a day like yesterday, guess what? A five-run inning is the ballgame.
I think the Cubs have to have productive outs for this lineup specifically. I don't think they're going to slug you to death. But if they get enough people on base, which is really the goal, and then they have the productive outs like we saw, then that will help. I also think we saw the benefit of a different lineup. Nico Horner batted leadoff. He had three hits on the day.
Then it was Alex Bregman. Then it was Ian Happ. Then it was Carson Kelly.
Chapter 4: How did the Cubs' starting pitching contribute to the win?
And then Michael Bush and Dansby Swanson. Pete Corarmstrong goes down to batting eighth in the lineup. What do you think of the lineup?
I'm very comfortable with that. Specifically because Pete Corarmstrong, even though you're like... Hey, he's eighth in the lineup. He should be higher than that. I mean, it's against the lefty, whatever. He's going to do what he does, regardless of where you put him. It's the threat of speed when he gets on base. He has an RBI single in this one.
Matt Bush, or excuse me, Matt Shaw, Michael Bush, each with two hits apiece. And you saw everyone contributing. Ian Happ, he had a double. one for four, but looking at the top to the bottom, when Nico Horner's going three for four with two doubles, you feel like, hey, this offense is going to have opportunities six for 16 as a team with runners in scoring position.
Well, and that's it. It's also the fact that I don't mind Pekor Armstrong batting eighth or ninth because you're lengthening your lineup. And that's been big for me, as you know. And I wanted the most consistent bat who can get on base, just get on base, to bat leadoff. So I like that Nico Horner did. Our segment is brought to you by AlmostFreeTeeth.com. So now they face the Guardians and then they face Pittsburgh, who is making a notable call at Marshall. We got this news before the show started that Connor Griffin, the top prospect in baseball, will debut with the Pirates on Friday for their home opener against the Orioles.
Smart call by the Pirates. Everybody saw what Connor Griffin was capable of in the spring. You know he's going to be a cornerstone of your offense, of your baseball franchise going forward. So get him up as soon as possible. And I love that they have that new incentive where you get an extra pick if you bring up a guy like this.
So, you know, the opposite, we could say of times past when guys have been held back.
Chris Bryant.
Yeah, Chris Bryant comes to mind. And so I like this for the Pirates. Also, now we get to see him against the Cubs in the... over the course of the next week.
