Chapter 1: What is discussed at the start of this section?
The views and opinions of Layla Rahimi, Marshall Harris, and Mark Grody should not be taken too seriously. Especially when they give advice. Do not take Marshall's analogies literally. Especially when it comes to Russell Dorsey. The sports thoughts of Rahimi, Harris, and Grody may change at any time. It's just sports. Okay, thanks, bye.
They're a long-term build type of team who's going through injuries.
The point is, it's even more up for grabs now as far as teams that may think they're in it. The time that passes. And the Cubs are on the outside looking in. This is the first time all season they've lost five in a row. But it's not just that they've lost five in a row.
It's who they lost to and how they lost those games in terms of the last series against the team that's now a game and a half ahead of them in the standings. And I know some people say it's too early to even look at the standings, but you have to pay attention to what's going on around you. And the one-two. Happ hits a pop fly into shallow right.
The first baseman, Walker, backing up, makes the catch on the outfield grass. And the ball game is over, and the Cubs have lost six in a row. Houston wins the opener of this series, 4-2 the final.
You know, we've struggled as a team for two weeks here, and that's while frustrating, it's still two weeks, you know. We're going to come out of this. It's going to be fine. We're a good baseball team. It's all going to happen. But while you've got to go through it, you've got to sit in some discomfort with it. Line drive, left field. Matthews is there. And that's the ball game.
Cubs have dropped seven in a row.
Bregman hits a looper into shallow right. Smith comes in, makes the catch. And the Houston Astros have swept the three-game series. The Cubs have lost eight in a row. The final today, Houston eight. Cubs five. The pitch, bouncing ball to second base, fielded by Lau, the throw to first, ball again, over. And the Pirates win game one by a score of 2-1. The Cubs have lost nine in a row.
The Pirates start to celebrate. This is the worst. You are the worst. I hate looking at your face. I want to smash it.

Chapter 2: How are the Cubs responding to their nine-game losing streak?
Then he mows down the first time through the order, and I'm like... Because typically, you know how this is, Mark. You and I have both traveled with baseball teams. We've both covered teams.
And when you get swept at home by not just the Brewers, but the Astros, too, who not only got so right when they saw you that they got the sweep, they then capped it off with the first no-hitter in baseball since 2024 yesterday. That part. And you know who had the one before that was the Cubs as a team no-hitter. So there's that side of it.
When you get swept out of your own town, you're looking forward to the road trip, especially facing a team who you know you can play well. Pittsburgh's a beautiful ballpark on a holiday day. That's an atmosphere to enjoy. And then you see what happens. Unfortunately, hitting-wise, they just pick up where they left off.
And now instead of talking about an eight-game losing streak, we're talking about a nine-gamer. And there's something in every game. I hate to put it this way, but the losing streak has been legitimate. The Cubs have earned each and every one of their losses. Yesterday, you started to talk about their starting pitcher. Then you could add the Dansby Swanson striking out with the bases loaded.
You can add Henry Davis hitting a home run off of Trent Thornton, which was the difference in the game yesterday. in the seventh inning. The game on Sunday showed Imanaga another bad performance. The game on Saturday against Houston, you scored zero runs. That was the story that day. The game on Friday, 0-9 with runners in scoring position, 0-4 with runners on third base in that game.
It's that part of it to me. It's the third base part where I'm like, are you blanking, kidding me? They have earned every... You're darn right I've been sitting in discomfort, Craig Council. I love the way he put that. That was beautiful. I don't know if I've heard what I have needed to hear from Craig Council yet, but boy did he put it perfectly.
Cubs fans, Cubs players, Cubs nation, everybody, Cubs front office, everybody is and should be sitting in discomfort right now. I don't know, Layla, if If you're sitting in discomfort, find out if not watching a team's nine-game losing streak is right for you. Side effects may include being happier about watching baseball.
I don't know if the Cubs stink, Layla, on the overall, but they sure stink right now. And they do have the cover-up. and that's what I'll call it, of two 10-game winning streaks, which keeps me from going into all-out panic at this point in the season. Moreover, because the Brewers take over and what they have done to the Cubs and the pain in the ass that they have been, it all comes in.
But the only thing comforting me is knowing that, yes, the Cubs actually do have an offense. We have witnessed it in two 10-game winning streaks, but it sucks right now. It sucks. That's it. Right now, this is what we're looking at here. And you said it. The 10-game win streaks were money in the bank.

Chapter 3: What insights do players share about the team's struggles?
Was he not? Was he not? I believe he was. Let me check. I think he was. I thought Octavio spent some time with the Soccos.
Yeah, yeah. He played for the White Sox.
How many years was he with the White Sox? Was he with the White Sox? 45. He was with everybody for 50 years. Oh, my God. Okay, so he's got 15.8 years of service time. Wow. Was it just one year with the Soccos? Was it just their... Was it aught eight? Yes. Okay, aught eight. Okay. Are we doing... No, he was 2008 and 2009. 2008. So it was both. Okay. 2008, 2009.
All right.
So this is how we're dosing this Cubs losing streak. Octavio, don't tell awareness. He was a tiger, too. That's how he ended his career. He did not get the win. That was Wilbur, don't tell. Wilbur of the don't tells.
Yeah.
Are they related? We don't know. But do I still think of Octavio from time to time? Yes. You should. I mean, you should. Yeah, one should think about Octavio. Is it Octavio or Octavio? I mean, where I came from at the time was Octavio. But that's not to say it was correct. That's just to say that's how we said his name. It's probably Octavio, I would guess. Oh, yeah. For real, real, yeah.
Octavio. I'm not the Spanish speaker in the house. Ray is, but that would be my guess. Well, Ray? Yes. Octavio? You would think so. Yes. You would think so. It's not Octavio? Like when he was with the Astros? Come on, Daretail. You just never know. You just never know because there's always the Luis Robert, you know, name. Robert. Yeah. We did go through a Robert phase. Oh, the Robert phase.
That was real, man. Oh, yeah. When nobody knew who he was and we were all just guessing. It was like Robert or Robert. So you never know. You got to ask. You're right. You're right. Okay, so you heard from us, but we also want to get into some of what did happen over the weekend, the changes in the lineup, what we heard Craig Council say.

Chapter 4: What changes are being made to the Cubs' lineup?
Host of the Compound Podcast. See a little clip of me finishing with two hands, maybe hitting a homer 500 feet. I don't want to freak you out, but I've been doing it a little bit in practice.
Connect Roasters coffee enthusiast. Here's a man that probably has five fresh pots a day. On 104.3 The Score. We toast you, Ian Happ.
And we don't get to say this very often, but live from his hometown, it is Ian Happ. Ian Happ joins us every week here on 104.3 The Score. And he co-hosts the Compound Podcast, which is now part of Odyssey Sports. New episodes drop every Wednesday with the latest discussion on the Cubs and baseball. Download and listen on the Odyssey app or wherever you get your podcasts. Ian, how are you?
Doing all right. How are you guys? We are good. So we don't need to tell you, of course, about what's going on just with the streak you guys are on. Streaks seem to be the name of the game so far this season. What is the mindset? Like, how are you feeling right now? Just understanding what's ahead of you. You're in Pittsburgh.
You've got two more games in this series and you're trying to come off the slide as a team. Yeah, I think it's just getting everybody back to basics. When you're on that kind of a skid, it just feels like a lot of things have gone wrong in the last nine games.
So whether that's not hitting one day or having a good pitching performance and just not getting the bats going, it feels like every little thing. Yeah. You know, that's what happens when it's just like we needed some good luck to win 10 straight, need some bad luck to lose 9 straight.
And so I think just right in the ship and getting out and not pressing, letting everybody kind of relax and go get a win. Well, and I think that's been the hardest part as an observer is, you know, this is a veteran. I always say like a good veteran who's been in the league for a long time is going to he's going to have shorter slumps than somebody who is a rookie.
You know, I know that's an adage, for example, and I kind of extend that to the rest of the team. And that's why it's so surprising because I. the lineup in a good way acted like one hitter when, when you had the two 10 game win streaks. And I almost feel like it's that way now in this losing skin. Yeah. I mean, we have a, we have a pretty similar group, um, this year that we did last year.
And I think last year, the most we won was five. And I don't know if we lost more than three or four in a row, um, for the whole season. So there wasn't a lot of this, you know, streakiness and, um, um, It doesn't make sense why it happens. You can rack your brain and try to explain it, but it's the baseball season.

Chapter 5: What insights do the hosts share about the Cubs' struggles?
He didn't get that? A Minnesota person? They may hate Green Bay more than we do. He's a casual fan. So he's not in on it like we are. And also, I heard another person as I was walking out of the ballpark behind me. They played Minnesota. I don't get it. So there's some confusion. Okay.
Chapter 6: How do the hosts perceive the rivalry between the Cubs and the White Sox?
Yeah, the Twins fans should be in on this, actually. They should be. The Twins fans also have reason to hate Green Bay. Up until the last few years, their rivalry with Green Bay, the Vikings Packers, was hotter than Bears Packers. Hate to say it. What do you got for us? Okay, so this is Antoine Randall-El. Last week, I had a little question for him at the end of our sesh.
I got to ask you, did you see or hear Green Bay Sox chance breakout and Cubs White Sox on the south side? I did not. I did not. It's the one time we came together that we can. That's what I'm talking about. That's all right. A little continuity over the weekend. Did that do your heart good? It does do my heart good. I like that. Cubs and Sox coming together for one call. For one call.
Chapter 7: What are the key takeaways from the discussion with Jim Margulis?
I like that. I like that.
One cause, Antoine Randall. I mean, if he approves. Although I got a beef to pick with him about the Sox hat, Cubs hat business. He can't be legislating that. Oh, that's right. He did legislate that. And I get it because one team chose him. Who was wearing that was... Somebody had a Sox hat on and he didn't like it. DJ Moore had Sox hats on all the time at Bears. Yeah, he looked good in that way.
It was Khalif Raymond now that I remember it was wearing. It was a Cubs hat or Sox hat? I think it was a Sox hat, right? And Antoine Randall took offense. I should find this out, but I think he was trying to protect him. He probably said, you don't want to wear either, because if you wear one, you're going to get hate from the other side. You've got to play it right down the middle, kid.
I think that's what Antoine Randall was probably trying to save.
Chapter 8: What updates are provided about the White Sox players and their performance?
And then he did wear a sick Decatur Staley's hat or something that day. I feel like DJ Moore was wearing White Sox hats, though. No, he was. That's what I already said. The red one, too, which was sick. But I thought that Antoine Randall-El had history with the Cubs, though, too. He did. He was drafted by the Cubs in like the 90th round or something.
I think that had something to do with it, didn't it? Oh, maybe. It was the 14th round. Yeah, so I thought that he was a Cubs fan and just trying to be a Cubs fan at the time. Apparently Mark did not get to the bottom of it. I had all that time with Antoine Randall-El, and I don't have answers still. You know who else would probably like the Green Bay Sucks chant at any given time? Who?
Ben Johnson. Yeah. You think Ben Johnson wants it? If Ben Johnson goes to a Cubs game, and we all know he's going to go, we all know, you flash him on the Jumbotron, what's going to happen? Green Bay sucks. Has he signed the stretch this year, Ben Johnson? He should. Well, he should, and he should start a Green Bay sucks chant. Instead of, let's get some runs, start a Green Bay chant afterwards.
Green Bay sucks. There is one person who has permission to remix the seventh inning stretch and not say, let's get some runs. It is Ben Johnson to say Green Bay sucks. A hundred percent. And Green Bay knows it. They get it. They suck. Or they just don't care. Like Matt LaFleur is like, I'm not even here. Like, I'm not even in this. He's like NeNe from Real Housewives. Why am I in here?
Because you just are, Matt LaFleur. You just are. I don't know NeNe. I just gave you that one. I don't know NeNe from No Housewives. It's a meme. It's a clip. It's a video clip where she's like, why am I in here? Why did I get mentioned? She caught some stray. And so that became a thing. Okay. It's just fun. It's also very college vibe. That happens all the time in college sports.
You just chant the name of your rival and that they suck. Yeah, it feels good anytime, anywhere. It's the most versatile chant the city of Chicago has. It works everywhere.
I'm into it.
It goes with their khaki pants.
It goes with everything.
